I reluctantly started teaching online 4 years ago. Now I absolutely love it. Instead of teaching "online" I see it as teaching "out in the world" - without walls. This is Episode 1 where I go over the basic setup and structure of my class:

I'm impressed, Michael. Great to see you giving advice on teaching online. I've been teaching fully online and in blended learning formats (online and face-to-face) since 2002 via Moodle. I thought I was addicted to online communication and learning until a few years ago. I now take every opportunity to teach face-to-face. I need to look into my students' eyes. I never thought I'd go back to regular face-to-face halls. I was hooked to Second Life, Virtual Worlds and social networking. I was so addicted that I started organizing online conferences, MOOCs, webinars and regular courses. I'd spend most of the day and night in front of the screen. I hardly slept and stopped my long distance running. I haven't stopped my online ventures, but except for online libraries, Google, my KZfaq channel, and Amazon, I need two-way eye contact to feel connected.

Why would anyone even dislike this video? Probably those professors I had in college that literally didn't do much and was more just an extra body in the room that threw up a powerpoint slide. That aside, thanks for this Michael!, I am potentially starting a part-time teaching position for a course related to my professional field, and I found your video to be really insightful. You sound like an amazing teacher, something I've had only very few of in my time in school. You don't need me to tell you this I'm sure, but keep it up!, your students appreciate you for sure.

Wanted to let you know how helpful this video is for helping me think about my summer class, which will be remote learning. I have used podcasts now for several years as a way to augment and focus my lecture, but I never thought about actually reading the book to the students. I'm going to start RIGHT NOW! This idea is a hidden gem.

Thank you for the tips! I still can`t believe what we went through in the spring. I would not gain this much skill otherwise given the fact that I literally had zero knowledge and practice in online teaching including recording and editing, and a million other things. Thank you for sharing! I enjoyed the idea about implementing the learning in your daily life and making videos while jogging and dishwashing. It takes confidence to do, but once it worked, I think students will feel more freedom and connection with you as a teacher too! Sure want to try it. What helped me to teach online during this spring semester is actually the experience of taking online courses myself (and copying some activities from them). Never thought it would be so helpful!

Thanks Michael for sharing your experience. I am a cultural studies teacher and also have two teenagers at home. You are totally right. That is a very good first step for teachers like me that are trying to scape from the heavy traditional ways of teaching, matching today's kids needs. This is pure LOVE, a very religious concept. Like so many, I’ve been suddenly thrust into the world of online teaching (college level). And I want to do right by the students. This video was a big help. Most of my colleagues hold live Zoom lectures in what seems to be an attempt to duplicate on-campus lecturing, and a fear of losing on-time interaction with students. I believe we live in an increasingly on-demand world. Unlike us, our students don’t tune in their TVs to such-n-such a time to watch their favorite shows; why should we impose this for their lectures and other course facets when we have such a great opportunity to reinvent our product? And we can use our students’ on-demand lifestyles as a model. It’s not been an easy transition, but videos like yours have been very helpful and give me hope for what teaching will look like in the future. Thank you.

I never wanted to teach online but Covid has forced it on us. I now want to be as good as I can be at it. Thanks for the series! It has taken me hours to make short videos of lecture topics for my students. And hours for those to be "processed" and loaded onto my course. I'm looking forward to learning more about the technical aspects (camera, editing software, etc).

Thank you for this video. This winter break, I am leading an afternoon seminar on online teaching, and I colleague shared your video with me for inspiration. And it did inspire me! I just spent a couple of hours making a trailer for my writing class. And you've reminded me that it's alright not to have "perfect" editing for the videos I make for my classes. Letting students see my own miscues and how I work through them is important for them to see. At my college, we are emphasizing captioning our videos. Do you caption yours?

I use DaVinci Resolve for editing (free!) and often just post them to KZfaq as unlisted videos. Our school also uses Mediasite, but I find KZfaq to be a little better. I will be posting a few tutorials on how to make videos for classes next summer.

Thanks for this resource. Very helpful for those thousands of us who have been thrust into on-line teaching whether we like it or not. I got a lot out of this video, but I would like to point out that you seem to have professional looking lighting equipment in your office, a real camera, a professional looking microphone, and you seem to have a camera-person filming you as you walk down the street with the local pastor or jog with your family. Most of us will simply not have this kind of equipment or support for the on-line material we are making. This video and your video class are thus not a realistic standard for most of us, and I wonder if you might in future videos focus on more attainable standards? I wonder whether you could share nuts and bolts information like the kind of equipment that would be affordable and which investments would make the biggest difference in our content for the lowest price? And what editing software do you use for your video production? Thanks!

Check out the rest of the series and you will see that I do not use the lighting (I bought it and used it for a few videos, but now just use window light), I don't have a camera person (that's a cheap 360 camera), and I use free editing software (DaVinci Resolve). I record with Screencastomatic and whatever camera is handy (the key to a good image is lots of light). I edit with DaVinci Resolve (which is free!)

Thank you Michael for your videos and your help so far. I am now one month into this new adventure of designing level 3 Anthropological Theory. With your tips I managed to get a teaching assistant/moderator for the group work! I am wondering aobut platforms for posting short lectures. Our university mandates Panopto. To use that programme - which streams content from an Amazon server - you have to surrender your rights to that company. You obviously feel comfortable with KZfaq. Do you feel confident that you can control your content - remove it if necessary - and not worry that it will be distributed in unexpected ways? My thought was to mount lectures there - and put links into our central learning management platform.

Your recording tech looks rather elaborate. I loved the sound of reading the course material - but I just have my laptop (admittedly with a brilliant mic but very average camera). Any free software to suggest to record MP3?

I use the All That Recorder on my Android phone. On a PC you can use Audacity with the LAME exporter.

I like to do some minor editing, so I use DaVinci Resolve (free). Resolve does not export in mp3, so I have to export as a WAV and then convert to mp3 using Audacity.

I am an American teacher in Thailand and our schools are closed until July 1st. Just had a meeting and we will be doing online lessons starting next month until schools resume. Came here to to see how others do online classes and also what equipment. And software I should consider buying. Interesting ideas! I'm currently working on my online syllabus for a class on ethnography I'm teaching next semester. Lots to think about here. It wasn't clear from the video, but when you say you read to your students, are you saying that you record yourself reading the entire assigned readings to them in each module? I can see the value, though it is certainly a great deal of work. On the other hand, it has benefits for accessibility for students who need accommodations.

Thanks! Yes, I read all of the readings. It does take a long time, and I couldn't keep up every week through the first semester, so I did as much as I could and I have been doing more this semester to fill in the gaps. It has several upsides: 1. accessibility, 2. more students "read", 3. I get a chance to "frame" the readings and talk about how it relates to other things we read and discuss, and 4. it helps me gauge just how much reading I have assigned. I try to assign 2-3 hours of readings each week. Recording myself reading lets my students know that I am not over or under-assigning reading for them.

Michael, a question. How do you get the audio from the KZfaq videos to incorporate them into the "big audio" for the students? I've found these tips GREAT and I tested them in one of my summer courses. It was AWESOME and plan to use a lot of these ideas for fall!! Thank you!

Great! To extract the audio from KZfaq videos you can either use a downloader like 4kDownload and set it to download as an mp3, or you can download as a video and then put all of them into an editor like DaVinci Resolve. Line them up as you want them and then export the audio only. Resolve only exports in WAV format, so you will have to use Audacity to convert to mp3. All of these tools (4kDownload, Resolve, and Audacity) are free.

I am in the process of developing my courses in an online format and I find your videos to be very engaging. What has stopped me in the past from making engaging videos has been the cost of video editing software. In your ending credits you cite a free video editor and so forth. Unfortunately I cannot see all of the info since a playlist box appears in the bottom corner. Could you please share the info you have regarding video editing, music, and stock clips? Much appreciated!

Davinci Resolve to edit. Videvo.com for free clips. KZfaq Audio Library for free music. Good luck!
