Fun back to back ride on my buddy Greg's 2022 Honda CRF250F and my 2022 Honda CRF250R on a short woods loop.
The CRF250F (MSRP $4749) is a fun trail bike with a fuel injected air cooled 4-stroke engine that runs clean with no stalling or hesitation and almost no vibration. The power is smooth (great for beginner riders) and the exhaust note is quiet. The suspension is very plush and works well for slower paced trail riding but quickly uses up all of it's 8.5" of travel as speed increases. The seat to footpegs to handlebar ergonomics feel modern with a thin overall feet. The disc brakes offer decent stopping power with good modulation. Excellent front end steering feel and smooth vibration free power were my favorite characteristics of the '22 CRF250F. The weight (265 lbs full of gas) was my least favorite part of the bike - not sure why this bike weighs so much. Lap time around the woods loop: 2:49
The 2022 Honda CRF250R sets the bar for "Fun to Ride" 250F moto bikes with an almost 125 2-stroke like agility and lightweight handling feel. The '22 CRF250R engine finally has decent low to mid power with good top end pull too. The biggest weakness on the CRF250R is the firm damping in the forks, especially noticeable on the choppy sections of trail on this short woods loop. Lap time for the '22 CRF250R on this loop was 2:35.
Fun to ride (2) Honda 250 4-strokes off road bikes back to back! The 2022 CRF250F exceeded my expectations with impressive front end turning feel and modern ergonomics. The '22 CRF250R is just plain fun to ride with quick and agile handling and a responsive engine. Ride Red!

I’m fortunate enough that I’m in a position where I could go buy any reasonably priced dirtbike if I wanted to. I very specifically went for ‘22 F. Less cost, less maintenance, and more forgiving while I work on building from my existing skill base into more tight off road stuff. The money saved can get put into going out and riding more, and honestly I have zero desire to do a full service every time I wheel it out of the shop. The motor is bombproof, and these bikes hold their value really frickin well so if I decide down the road to get something more racey I’m not losing my shirt on it like a lot of high end bikes on the used market(near me at least). Really cool seeing the 2 ridden back to back by a competent rider. Right on.

XR100 is a fun and lightweight bike that is also very durable. I would recommend visiting a few dealers and getting their recommendations on various bikes based on your skill level. Perhaps you have family members that can also give recommendations based on your skill and experience. There are lots of options for street legal off road bikes. Bikes like a XR150L or CR300L would be a step up from the XR100 and both are street legal. KTM/Husqvarna/Gas Gas and Beta all offer higher performance street legal off road bikes. There are a lot of choices!

That is the rear tire under hard braking skipping along the ground and the chain slapping against the chain slider on the swingarm. Sometimes loosening the rebound on the rear shock helps keep the tire in better contact with the ground under braking and can reduce that chatter sound.

Can someone explain what the rx model actually is compared to the f and r ?
@mxengineer1

The CRF250RX is basically a CRF250R with an 18" rear wheel, o-ring chain, usually 1-step softer spring rate front and rear in the suspension along with a softer suspension setting, revised EFI mapping for smoother throttle response, and a larger fuel tank. The R and RX models are competition models with making more power and also weighing significantly less and require far more frequent engine maintenance and parts replacement. F model is a more classic Honda trail bike with a focus on durability and long engine life and lower cost initially and overall. I'd recommend visiting a local Honda dealer to see the bikes and discuss with a knowledgeable salesperson to understand the differences.

The '22 CRF250F is a capable and easy to ride bike with a broad usable power range and solid handling characteristics. However a rider of similar skill on a '22 CRF250R which is 30+ lbs lighter and makes twice the power is going to have a significant performance advantage. For me that added up to about 14 seconds faster lap time on a short woods loop. I would assume you would go faster on the CRF250R too! Some people say dirt bike riding is 85% rider and 15% bike....that is probably true as most times a highly skilled fast rider on a slow bike will beat a slow rider on a fast bike! Depending on the type of riding and racing you are doing a CRF250F might be a fun bike to race!

A quick press on the map switch will make the blue map light come on and flash the selected map (1-flash is map 1 - the stock map, 2=flashes in Map 2 the Soft map, and 3-flashes is Map 3 the aggressive map)

I have a crf 250f and a yz250 and although it lacks some power in comparison it is such a fun bike the only thing I don’t like is how low I sit on it I’m 185 lbs and 6 ft tall and I feel like the suspension is so low
@mxengineer1
@mxengineer1 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the suspension travel on the CRF250F is quite a bit less than your YZ250. Honda targeted a lower seat height. I wonder how much better the stock CRF250F suspension would work for faster riders with just stiffer springs?

@mxengineer1
@mxengineer1 2 жыл бұрын
Ricky Carmichael is about your size and had no issue riding full size race bikes. Really comes down to how comfortable you are riding a dirt bike without being able to put your feel flat on the ground (probably you will tip toe or have one flat on the ground and the other on the footpeg). There are people smaller than your riding full size dirt bikes. You can also get lowering links for the rear suspension to get a bike lower to the ground (though it will have an effect on suspension feel).... www.koubalinks.com/

I know this is an old post, but I am 5’ 6” and ride the crf250r on the track and love it. Once you are moving on a track, the short inseam and tall seat doesn’t matter one bit. But off road woods single track over obstacles and loamy steep and side sloped terrain and such, the crf250r is a real challenge because I cannot dab/reach when needed. The crf250f seems like a much better choice…

1979 Kawasaki KLX250 was an air cooled 250F engine in a close to moto chassis! The 1996 Honda XR400 had adjustable suspension but a steel frame that was more off road focused. Air cooled engines in a full on moto frame are custom builds today.
