One of my all time favorite keeps. Once had one with “weathered” paneling. Re paneled it with peel away kitchen shelf liner “wood grain finish”. A little Pledge and she was lemony fresh and show room ready. Thanks Jay.

Actually, the Cherokee XJ first began in 1984 but with a very underwhelming engine, the 2.8. -- 1987 is where the true XJ Cherokee began with the 4.0, they pushed the firewall further into the Jeep to fit the larger engine. The Wagoneer line of the XJ was produced along side the other XJ's. Clock at 9:20. I am very happy to hear that this Jeep is going to continue to be on the road as it's pretty much all complete. The Wagoneer XJ's are pretty darn rare. And also the third brake light was mandated for the Jeep Cherokee in 1994. I only know all this stuff because I've own 4 of these wonderful Jeeps. :)

Man, just look at the genuine, polymer laminate wood paneling. Classic! To be honest, I love those old Jeeps.

I got my first XJ, a 94,six months ago. I have repaired every little thing and I'm into it under 5 grand. It has 140 on the odometer and I like it way better than anything I've ever owned. I have been told the XJ is the best vehicle ever made, I think so too. I suspect it will outlast me.

Love the video Jay this brings me back to the early 2000s when I had a 89 jeep wagoneer. I loved that truck my was brown with wood grin and had a light brown interior had to get rid of it do to a electrical issue that I couldn't fix. I had a Jeep just like that it was silver and all. When I bought it. I had the jeep painted black and gold pinstriping put above the woodwork on the sides. That jeep was absolutely amazing! When I had to sell it it had $168,000 Mi on it. The floor pan in the rear driver side was rusted through. That jeep got me through so many snow storms it was crazy. I went into Boston and a blinding snowstorm to pick up my other half who was getting out of work early due to the bad storm. We drove up Route 93 into New Hampshire without any problems at all I just love that jeep! Now after 7 Jeeps we currently have a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit which was top and at the time. Nothing like a Jeep!

I will always miss my 86. Crank and vent windows. A dream at the time!

I've tore a 4.0 down with over 250k because some dummy run it with bad water pump and over heated the engine, it wasn't even worn... those engines are a master piece....

had my dads 91 Cherokee , with 4.0 straight six, had 145,000 miles on it when I sold it in 2013, excellent shape, his did not have a third brake light? strange but I know I kept it along time after he passed away, man who purchased it is still driving it and loves it :) thanks for the post J, and hope your dad is still doing well :)

1988. The last year to still have the AMC logo on the gauge cluster and certification labels(even though it was wholly Chrysler built at that point.)

Those 4.0L Straight 6’s never die. We used to have a 98 Cherokee Sport with 220,XXX miles on it until we sold it to some kid who wrecked 3 vehicles in only 1 year. That thing would’ve ran to 300,000 for sure, but most likely now it is in the junkyard because of the kid.

Hey a couple of things!, I own one of these mines a 1984 so a lil different but the reason it’s stalling is because it has an automatic electric powered choke, they tend to be finicky and go out if you just force the Jeep to keep running and get hot the choke will let more fuel come through and it will idle, also the buzzer is for the open door, seatbelt, key position, wipers and lights so you have to do all that to get it to shut up, hope this helped! :)

Really nice jeep, looks great with the 4 headlights, well worth saving and glad it's going to someone who will love it. We didn't get the jeep brand in tight hand drive here in the UK till around the mid 90's, and now they sell quite well.

Not to nitpick because you know your stuff, but 3rd brakelight became mandatory in all '86 model year cars. Trucks and SUVs may have been later. Love the jeep! What a rare find. It may be the only one of its kind left.

Oh man, this is like a unicorn for me! My first car was an ‘86 XJ Wagoneer “base”. Same color combo, same quad headlight front end, but no wood on the sides. Built by AMC, had the 2.8 which made it a slow pig but I loved it anyway. My parents bought it new, I took it over around ‘95 and kept it immaculate all through high school. Well once real life started going it just became transportation and I slowly ran it into the ground. Started getting rusty in the rockers like they all do, then it broke a valve spring and that was that. Scrapped it around ‘05 I think. But it was my first car, you only ever get one of those! Wish I’d kept it. Valve spring wasn’t such a huge deal, and the rocker rust is pretty easy to fix on those. Oh well, if I’d known then what I know now...

Last of the AMC era Jeeps. Very cool!! I bet that 6 is really torquey. And fun to play in the mud with!

Love these old Jeeps. I have an 89 with the original AMC logo keys too. A one owner find I found. Bone stock with 200k when I bought. Even though it's a Renix I've been very happy with great. Getting around 22mpg running the ethanol regular gas

Happy to hear that this one lives again. I have seen Jeeps here in alaska go a half a million miles before it would even start to use oil. because it was so little they waited another hundred thousand mikes. My doctor has one and only drives it in winter time or really cold weather, below zero for weeks cause I had it starting so good that it was just a breeze to start. his wife is a paint and polish kinda girl. She sent it out to be painted about five years ago and people will be dumb enough to ask where did you get it at, we want one thinking it is new. JT my doctor is going to give it to his daughter when she goes to college next winter! She is a good driver and has her first car that has some age to it but it shines and looks good and she does her own maintenance on it for about five years now so if you ever get a new rig, you might get it but they are known for hanging on to the old one.All in all they still don't have very many cars/trucks ..... and they are rich!!!

One of the best trucks ever made. Had my 1987 for 22 years 260k miles . AMC such a great Jeep. A lady ran a red light and tweaked my tailgate. 2000 sport now with Dana 44 and HP 30 from my 87.

I had a 1988 Loredo 5-speed I loved dearly. It was a great car till I rolled it. The engine was so good it was still running after rolling twice. Love it

Save this one! There's very few of the Wagoneer XJs out there. Love the Renix 4.0s, much better than the high output 4.0! Also those tail lights are worth some coin to the right collector. all of the 87-90 4.0L have that sticker on them. The Renix 4.0 uses a metric thread oil filter . The other JEep engines, and most other American vehicles use standard thread pitch oil filters. The oil filters for these things are impossible to find. The only one readily available is an orange fram. Check the ballast resistor on the drivers side fender. You can bypass it. They go bad and cause it to not start. If you clean up the grounds it will run great.

My first car was a 1995 Jeep Cherokee sport. Sold it to a guy who swore he would give it back to me and he ended up selling it to somebody else three months after I sold it to him. Unfortunately I didn’t find out about that until three years later. I miss my jeep so much. That is a beautiful little jeep, so glad you are Keeping it and I look forward to seeing more on it soon.

I scraped a 94 Cherokee Laredo with 287,000 miles but had no floors left in it and the driver seat was falling out. Also had wiring issues with the headlights and the starter. Could not kill that motor and I could not get it stuck in the winter. Miss that old jeep. Drove it to the scrap yard running fine.

save save save. super collectible. that is a $4000+ vehicle as is here in New England. the rockers, rear quarter, doors, lift gate are all perfect. They only made the wagoneer limited for a few years before rebranding it the cherokee.

The square blank spot on the dash is for an optional analog clock, my dads old Jeep pickup had that optional clock in it.

I'm an xj fan. Very reliable. Great engine. I would have reservations spending big money on a resto however....... The compression of the engine sounds great.

That's going to make a nice ride. There certainly can't be many of those top-of-the-line Cherokee-body Jeeps left and that one is in very decent shape indeed. It wouldn't take all that much to make that one look like new again, even the front seats should be a relatively easy job to make really nice again...

That's is a nice mechanic's special. It needs a power wash, although. If it needs that work you described; it would make a great commuter.

I just bought a 1989 cherokee xj. The ding to let you know a light is left on or what ever. Wont turn off no matter what unless the seatbelt is on

i have the same buzzer issue with my 99 ranger. how i get mine to stop is after the key is out, palm smack the ignition switch till it shuts up.
