Thanks for watching! Today I look at 10 of my biggest pet peeves in JRPGs. I love the genre so much, but some of my biggest annoyances in games come from JRPGs. Let me know in the comments which JRPG pet peeves you have. I hope you all enjoy!

Great video Joey, I agree with at least half of this list for sure. Ridiculous RNG drops and heavy grinding annoys me to no end. I'll never forget trying to obtain every rare Blade in Xenoblade 2.

Oh man, depending on how a gatcha system is employed, I don't mind it in games and could be fun. Xenoblade 2 was a nightmare. I have up trying to get all the blades (especially one from a previous Xeno series)

The rare items and obnoxious indications are a nightmare of mine. And the side content that they make it mandatory is hella annoying, like Digimon Cyber sleuth, luckily the game has a color code for quest and you just have to do the red ones when the games ask you.

Yeah rare items where RNG is not on your side is very frustrating. And yep side quests should not be a requirement to beat games. I still need to play the 2 Digimon Cyber Sleuth games

You know, Trails actually has pretty strong and focused dialogue for a JRPG and almost all add something. Now, Persona is really bad about having tons of filler dialogue where characters talk about nothing or have 5 long conversations for what could have been one short conversation. I think they are making the same mistake as Golden Sun, but they have way more characters than Golden Sun and they shouldn't all have to have an equal number of dialogue boxes. It sounds like you should steer clear of Breath of Fire on SNES - Some dungeons have insane encounter rates - The translation was botched, so even when the game tries to tell you what to do, it doesn't succeed. Even menus are mistranslated - The game has a ton of missables. You have to know to backtrack at a specific point without the game nudging you. If you don't, you miss out on the town building side quests and everything they bring

I love Trails but there's definitely some parts where I want the game to move along. I think just about every JRPG has those drawn out pieces of dialogue though. Persona I agree with for sure. I love the series but the talking can drag, especially the beginning of those games. I wish Golden Sun would get a new game Haha I do have Breath of Fire on my list to play. I would play it on my Switch though to have rewind and save states. I do enjoy older retro JRPGs. I just need to be in the right mood to play a good portion of them as many 8 and 16 bit JRPGs have similar issues

@@TotalLevelYT yeah, I'm not saying Trails never drags, just that when it does I can tell it's a pacing issue and it's still developing the plot, world or characters. There's not much "idle" dialogue.

Nice one Joey I think I agree with you on most of these , For me a lot of the retro ones can be overly grindy

Yeah it's why I do prefer modern JRPGs. Still love many old ones, but yep can be quite grindy

I know the first was a joke but im the opposite of a pet peeve when it comes to stroking animals. No interest at all. Dont care for pets. Happy for dev time yo be spent on other things as it all takes time away from other areas. Low % drops can get in the bin. High % can follow. On FFXI (yeah its an MMO i know) had a high defence ring for Paladin with an 80% (yes EIGHTY) drop rate from a notorious monster that couldnt be solod. I got to do it with some friends and of course, as usual, i just happened to be in the 20%. I never went back. I ALWAYS seem to take forever for any drops. Never get them quickly

Haha fair enough. Yeah those drops, even ones that are common, are brutal when RNG just isn't on your side. It's why it's number 1 for me and it's funny. When you want a certain item to drop, it could be 99.9% rate, and you still won't get it because you need it

Oh I agree with all of those, I think that’s why so many retro games that get re-released include save states/rewinds to help mitigate! Otherwise there are ROM hacks to rebalance them!

Yeah that's what's nice about re-releases as many do come with those QoL stuff or playing old games on the Switch to have save states/rewind. Like you said, that's where ROMs come in. I just don't have patience like I did as a kid lol
