C'est tres bien, Pascal! I enjoyed this video very much about your tower and antenna set-up. They are excellent, especially to me being in an apartment, though I am in Delray Beach, Florida, being from White Plains, NY, near New York City, I can go outdoors and set-up portable and go mobile here. The view of your neighborhood from your tower was great too. You also have a beautiful station. I studied French in High School for three years but that was a long 60 years ago, being 76 now. I started with radio in High School in 1960, being a ham since 1962. My wife and I were on vacation in Quebec City and Montreal in summer 2008 during the 400th anniversary celebration of Samuel de Champlain In Quebec, and enjoyed it very much. I went to EXPO 1967 in Montreal, with my parents then. I remember it was Man and His World. I saw the French Pavillion from then is now a Casino. My Father and Uncle during WW II, were from London, UK, in eastern Canada, Ile aux Noix, Sherbrooke, Farnham, Quebec City and Halifax, working for Dominion Engineering, before we came to the US in 1949, on the ship, Queen Mary from the UK. Keep on doing the videos, Aurevoir! 73 de W2CH.

Pascal, I am so very impressed with the thought and planning you put into your ham radio 'shack' and antennas. Your detailed workmanship is exceptional - neat, organized and well implemented. I am curious - what is your 'regular' job? You may have mentioned this before, but I'm a new subscriber. As an engineer myself, I care about not only the performance of my technology, but how well it's put together and will take extra time to make installations look clean, too. Hi Scott, I know it's complicated these days to set up a tower, even in Canada. Fortunately for me I have what they call a "droit d'acquis", which translate to "acquired right", I'm not sure this is the correct expression in English. In short, it means it was installed before they change the regulation. So I can maintain and replace it as long as it stays the same height. It's still possible in my city but a public consultation is necessary and they may limit you at 48 ft. 73 Pascal VA2PV
@ak5sd
@ak5sd 4 жыл бұрын
@@Laboenligne I know what you mean. When rights are carried over after a change in policy, we call that "Grandfathered". Literally, I guess that refers to something that has been around for a while. LOL. The same principle applies in the US, but HOAs have been around since about the mid-80's so it's hard to find a property like that.

The price of the Urban beam covering 6-40 meters is much less than a traditional aluminum antenna with similar capabilities. Also since the antenna tunes itself, the boom length is short reducing weight and K-Factor. The result of low K-Factor means a less expensive tower. I have a 3 element SteppIR DB18 and found not using SteppIR would have cost another $1,200 for an aluminum antenna and another $5,000 for a heavier duty tower.

👍 What a setup! No way on earth I'd get local planning permission to have a 56ft tower in my backyard. Quite apart from the raft of local government regulations, my neighbors would write objection letters in blood. Given the proximity of the electricity lines, I guess you factored in the fall down distance. I can't see the inverted V for 80m but maybe I need new glasses. 😛
@Laboenligne
@Laboenligne 4 жыл бұрын
Yes everything was calculated to be installed correctly. No risk for the power line with this setup. The tower test shows that it breaks at the second section from the top with a pulling force of 3000 pounds. Each section is 8 ft and the power line are at 34 feet. When not in used the antenna is beaming south in parallel of the power line and the boom is 4 ft. Plus the UrbanBeam outside elements are made of fibreglass. 73 Pascal VA2PV

nice video there pascal, i have a urbanbeam also here in the UK, but unfortunately mine has beset by numerous problems, including one end popping off in the wind and the swr going sky high, currently my tower is in the cranked down position, until i get around too fixing the steppir, also another thing is i was never supplied with stainless steel bolts when i got my direct from steppir,and as i live very closes to the sea, the bolts are showing signs of sea corrosion,on the upside of the steppir performance wise,i have worked VK7 from here IO84HQ on 40m ft8 with 50 watts beamed @ 110 degress,and i can work USA/Canada off the back off the beam on 40/30/20 m no problem with out turning to the west, and even down to the Falklands Islands and south america while i am pointing 90 -110 deg to Europe, hey ho it will be fixed soon hopefully :) keep up the videos pascal informative and plain speaking as usual 73s Kevin M6ENP/G2KS
@Laboenligne
@Laboenligne 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin. The SteppIR antennas are a complex gear, special care needs to be taken when assembly. Maybe you can replace the bolts with something that will not corrosion. It must be windy in your area as mine survive a 110 km wind storm with sticky ice on it. Something I always do is when not in I used turn the beam pointing south so the dominant wind is always at the end of the antenna not on the side. You can switch the beam with the 180 degree function as well. 73 Pascal VA2PV

(countycomm.com/products/countycomm-gp-5-ssb-general-purpose-radio) I'm completely new to radios and I'm aware that while this radio isn't capable of transmitting I was wondering if you would be able to help me through configuring it to receive or maybe you even have your own or could get your own to make a video on it. It's a really nice radio just for FM and AM but I'm pretty sure it can receive stuff on the HAM radio band... I just don't understand or can't get anything to come through. Hello Pascal, Thanks for the upload, it is excellent as always! 😊 I would like to ask if your neighbours have a problem with your antennas or tower? I live in the UK and have the same vertical Diamond antenna that you own; it had been erected only a short time when a neighbour complained to the Council (our local Civil Authority). Now I have to go to the hassle and expense of a formal planning application. I am taking the opportunity to ask for a 12m crank up mast, so if the neighbour was upset about the vertical, God knows how they react to the mast 😊 Keep your fingers crossed for me! 73s, John M7JHA

Thanks John. In Canada amateur radio licences are managed by the federal government, so city has nothing to say. It changes over the years and now we need to have a neighborhood consultation process but they can't refuse the permit if the process is respected. But I installed the tower way before this new regulation, and both my direct neighbour bought their home knowing and seeing the antenna setup before buying. I guess I'm lucky. 73 Pascal VA2PV
