In this episode of MakeMineMusic, Marc Daniel Nelson shares his 4 favorite plugins to achieve heavy low end.
Renaissance Bass Plug In
When you need your bass to be heard even on a laptop or mobile device, Renaissance Bass is your best friend. Using Waves’ patented MaxxBass® psychoacoustic technology, R-Bass accurately reproduces low-frequency content on playback systems that cannot physically handle these signals. This is achieved by the creation of harmonics of the fundamental, which fool the brain into perceiving bass frequencies that are not actually there.
With a simple, user-friendly interface-just 3 controls for frequency tuning, intensity and output gain-R-Bass makes it quick and easy to dial in a punchy bass sound that will sound great on systems of all sizes.
Ampeg B-15N Plug In
Defining the sound of electric bass, the Ampeg B-15N has been instrumental in everything from Motown cuts with James Jamerson to classic Stax records with Donald “Duck” Dunn. The 30-Watt, 1X15 all-tube power machine is filled with character, giving you a thick fundamental note that has been responsible for huge records from the ’60s and ’70s - Rock, Funk, Soul, you name it!
Crafted by Brainworx, the Ampeg B-15N plugin emulates the circuitry, tone and iconic beefiness of Ampeg’s Heritage B-15N amp.
Vitamin Sonic Enhancer Plug In
Waves Vitamin is a multiband harmonic enhancer and tone-shaping plugin that can make any track sound powerful and full of spark by mixing an enriched version with the original signal.
With its zero-latency processing, Vitamin caters to studio and live mix engineers alike. Used as an insert on any track or buss, Vitamin instantly delivers a warm, vital result that is comparable to what you would get from a parallel chain of EQ, compression and saturation processors, but without the hassle.
Whether used on vocals, guitars, synths, drums or an entire mix, Vitamin opens up the sound in a way that truly complements and enhances the original signal, ensuring your tracks get the nutrients they need.
The Haas Effect
The Haas effect is a psychoacoustic phenomenon discovered by Dr. Helmut Haas in 1949. Also known as the “precedence effect,” the law states that when one sound is followed by another with a delay time of approximately 40 ms or less (below humans’ echo threshold), the two are perceived as a single sound.
This relates to how we determine spatial location by sound. Because two noises with a very short delay between them are perceived as one, spatial location is determined by the first heard, dominant sound-regardless of where the second came.

Good evening from the UK... At the moment I'm in the exploration stage... despite how long I've been doing this, I just used to tough it out and go 'commando', so to speak! Mostly because I lack the understanding and I didn't just want to rely on 'Plugins' to sound good... or at least better! Recently though, having jumped headfirst into the academy, I'm becoming more confident in trying out stuff... nothing major, 'Enverb' for some gated toms recently, 'Stereo Spread' cos' I'm basically lazy and it's helping the tracks sound more dynamic... out of stock stuff, have used 'Fresh Air' which is subtle but nice and 'Drip'... I know 😉... but it does actually add some much needed pizzazz, or seasoning if you like? My biggest discovery is 'Output'... subscribed to 'Arcade' which is a pretty cool repository for samples and is already changing my style and sound! I've said enough!! 😎👍

While I also like RBass. I’ve realized, after lots of testing, that MaxxBass does a better job at retaining sub-information while adding harmonics. You need to mess with all the parameters to dial it in, which is part of the secret- you have more control than RBass Therefore, I always use Maxxbass over RBass.

Great video - Thank you! As a German native speaker I had to laugh about the title insert "Hass Effekt"... the Haas Effect is the pseudo-acoustic effect named after Herbert Haas. "Hass" is the German word for "hate". Not sure what the "Hass Effect" is, perhaps it's something about our history...

this was great! my first experience with the idea of HAAS on bass was from the David Moulton Audio Lectures like...25 years ago when you had to order the discs from Mix Magazine because there was no "online" ordering back then hahaha...everyone would look at me weird when I would use the HAAS effect on bass (I always high passed the effect to keep the mono low end clean) but in the end when I'd A/B it...they'd always choose the effected version...cool to see it showing up again 🙂

Thanks Marc for this one. What I learned most from this video was a tiny detail when demonstrating your use of Vitamin. While soloing the lowest frequency range band you were still listening for clarity between instruments. (Kick, Bass, Synth) This was very helpful in finding a more precise definition of tonal centers for each instrument, all while exploring in the “mudd” range . It was a Captain Obvious moment for me on how to keep using critical listening within a given range instead of hearing just the range as a whole. Dive deeper.

I've been finding PS22 Split from Waves audio a great version of the hass effect. I recently mixed a live recording of a rock trio and used PS22 to push the distortion gtr to the sides to make room for the screaming vocals down the middle. Worked a treat. I've used a lot of mono to stereo spreader effects and PS22 is my fav.

It's a very warm chorus. Like nothing-above-6k on the modulated signal warm. The hass will retain your crispy higher harmonics but make them stereo. The TAL will keep your highs centered and create stereo out of the low-mids/mids. The TAL chorus sounds great, but if you want to create space for something in the center, it's good to be aware of the frequencies involved.
