Government Issue joe (GI Joe) many US soldiers were stationed in the Philippines especially during ww2; when kids meet any white young man, they usually assume them to be American soldier, so they greet them hey joe or g.i. joe. In the 60's, 70' and 80's during vietnam war, many US soldiers were stationed in different US military bases i.e. Sangley pt. Naval base Cavite, Subic Bay Naval Base Olongapo city, John Hay air base Baguio city, Clark air base Angeles city and San Miguel Communication station Tarlac. hence the name hey joe by Filipino kids.

Hi beautiful V and Sergie! With regards to your curiousity about GI Joe and why filipinos call the white male foreigners Joe because it started during the world war II. Hey Joe is an expression left over from WWII. It is a "term of endearment" for american soldiers. The american soldiers were called GI Joe during the WWII when they were in The Philippines. The word GI orginally stands for "Galvanized Iron", which is the primary material used to make military items but as the military grew and evolved over time GI took on multiple meanings such as "Ground Infantry", "General Issue", and later on "Government Issue" which is a decriptive term for US government issued supplies. Later on GI Joe was made into a movie and comic book series and the rest was history. :-)

The term "Joe" started during the Liberation Time when Americans freed the Philippines from Japan. When people greeted an American, they said: "Hi, Joe!" or "Victory, Joe," they're given a bar of chocolate or candy by the American soldier. Maybe some Filipino people asked you with this phrase, "where you going," are you married," is because that's what they only able to speak. Because not all Filipino are able to speak English. actually there's chempedak in some provinces of Mindanao thou that fruit is not popular in the Philippines just like other tropical fruit s that exists but not as popular as other fruits for example; bubunaw, kahel, aratiles and many more, they're not sold to markets because only few likes it, or rather it's abundant to a certain place, or it's rare to find that fruit, or doesn't have market value at all

The locals (Filipinos) ask where you are going is because you are a foreigner and you are not a local there. They are probably curious to know where you are going so they could help you on how to get to your destination. I think this is the reason why. But now that there are so many expats living in the island and around the country, the locals are used to your presence and it is just ordinary to see you around 😀 Just my thought. ❤

I think the reason why you were not allowed to bring mangoes in the island because they don't want to mix the Philippine mango with other varieties. Filipinos loves boxing and during boxing matches on TV this commercial is repeatedly played around that year and gave any male foreigner a new stereotype to be called "Joe". Omg! I am a filipino born and raised in mindanao but I got no idea that durian has different kind of varieties. I have no clue about it. Shame on me! I really thought durian is just durian no varieties but I was wrong. Maybe because when I was young I do not fancy eating durian coz of the strong smell. I do not even like going near it. My bad!
