Thank you for watching! How do you approach the beginning of your styling process? Do you plan things out like I do, or are you more spontaneous?

I see something I like and try to find a spot for it. I struggle with creating a complete style that is cohesive and creates a certain feeling. I like the floor lamp you put on your mood board that has the green glass. My current living room lamp has a broken shade, and my bedroom lamp doesn’t create the mood I want. I like the foggy tree art above your bed if you use art you already own. It has a soft, dreamy quality.

I don’t really plan things out too much (unless I am buying an expensive item like a new couch); I know what I like so I just go with my instincts. If the finished look doesn’t quite work, it’s usually not too difficult to fix (a different shade of paint, for example!). I switch the decor (by which I mean ornaments, artwork, throw pillows, etc) around in my home a lot - keeps things “fresh”. Also if you put some of your surplus decor items away for a year or two and then get it out again, it feels like lovely new stuff and you can enjoy it all over again!

I tend to start with the things I collect and add pieces there then move to colors and how I want those colors to make me feel. I tend to mostly enjoy moody colors and jewel tones. Then if I see a really spectacular piece that would work with the mood of the room, I will just go for it and try to work it in somewhere.

I painted the wall behind my bed black then hung huge dark floral tapestry and I love it. I also have that green glass lamp in my bedroom. Still have lots more to figure out as it still is not hitting the spot. :)

I definitely vote for the all black painted bedroom!!! 🖤 To combat the mental and physical load of painting then you can either hire it out or for cheaper have a paint party and invite friends or family. Sometimes you can even ask on-site maintenance staff for their advise or connections. Can't wait to see the floral mural wallpaper behind the couch it is going to be 🔥. Lovely, you could have still used the wallpaper as large a square as possible then faux frame around to make a feature behind the bed..x

Hi Steffi, I do a little planning but mostly I go shopping first..and anything I see that will fit in my style I will purchase. And it usually works for me . I love if you move the 3 large floral paintings over to your headboard. Instead of painting your walls black. Whatever you decide it will be fabulous. ❤

Hello Steffi and Hilo, I'm so happy to see a video. I'm absolutely a take my time and decorate with what makes me feel good, comfortable,cozy,happy and decorate how I really live. I love dark moody jewel tones, and any shade of turquoise, I also love chartreuse,olive and BLACK, and plants. I love rain and grey skies, which is why I made King County home. I'm a maximalist that takes my time to find the right place for all my treasures, I don't like white walls,empty spaces and I agree, shop your home move things around and make home about you. Which I can because I live alone. Well with my cats but, they seem to be very happy with our apartment. Thank you for sharing Steffi, I really like the idea of the tapestry over the bed and love the sound waves over the TV 🥰

I'm definitely a planner. As a kid, I used to draw out my room on graph paper and move furniture around, etc. When I was 19 and first married, I used to rearrange the living room furniture at 2 or 3 am while my husband was at work (yes, I'm an owl). I guess it must have been interesting to step in the door at 6 am and be confronted by an entirely different room than had been there the previous evening, lol. Lovely to see a video again from you and, it occurred to me as I was watching, if the 3 floral prints by themselves don't quite create the impact you were hoping to get by using that wallpaper, could you just paint that one wall black? The whole room is quite the enterprise to take on but it just feels like the black wall, plus the florals might give very much the same sort of impression the wallpaper would have done. And you're going to basically be covering the wall beside the window with the large mirror anyway, so I don't feel like you need to go to the effort of painting that too. I'm really not sure about the other 2 walls, and you were less clear on what you plan to do in those areas anyway. Looking forward to seeing what you choose to do.

Oooh you make some really good points! I'm definitely a go-big-or-go-home kind of girl, and ideally I'd want to paint EVERY INCH of the room, haha. But you're right, maybe that one wall is all it really would need... hmm you have me thinking!

I love that last flower image that you show in the options for above your bed. Maybe you can just paint that one wall black? Or can you get solid black wallpaper and do a partial wall/ focal point area with the black and some cool art? Whatever you choose it'll look amazing!

Thank you! Yeah I LOVE the idea of that floral piece against a black wall. I think if I do black paint, I'll want to go ALL IN and paint every wall (maybe even the ceiling haha). Really commit to the drama, you know? 😊

Could you use the wallpaper you love behind your bed and then paint the rest of that wall black (possibly using a lime wash or other treatment to help it blend better?)

I thought about that! But I was already considering putting it up in the living room anyway, so the sizing issue ended up being the deciding factor. 😊

adorable clingy Hilo being extra cute as usual! you should see if Sam's club or Costco near you have their amazing floor length filigree mirrors available! they'd look incredible in your bedroom. unfortunately they've been selling out everywhere though, i missed out on them in my area. can't wait to see your new bedroom it's going to look amazing!

Ooooh I'm such a Costco girl, I love that they're carrying those! I just ordered a floor-length mirror though, in a cool arch shape. And a filigree mirror from World Market will be going on my desk!

@@ModaMisfit def for the best that you ordered some already, i bet they will be gorgeous! most Costco's/ Sam's clubs sold out of the mirrors last week, there aren't ANY available within 150 miles of me in socal lol. I've already seen people flipping their $150 mirrors for $500+ ugh. can't wait to see your cute new mirrors!

Hi Steffi, I'm thinking a black accent wall behind the bed in a soft black. Then you can put the wallpaper that you had in your previous bedroom behind the bed acting as a backdrop for the bed. And instead of pasting the wallpaper on you can find a way to tape it on using 3M tape. Or you can just put it on as regular wallpaper and then know that in the future you can always remove it or cover it. Or you can use part of the wallpaper and have it be the size of the 3 black & white flower pictures. I think you should definitely find a way to use the wallpaper you have a heart connection to behind the bed in some way, shape, or form.

You're not in a rush to be done with this room, since you've been in it 5 months already. You should ABSOLUTELY do the black walls. I had the same concerns as you... I ended spending a month moving things around in the bedroom, as I was painting one wall per weekend. I've been enjoying this labor of love since months now; it was so worth it!

I have been trying to make over the guest room. I keep thinking this is it and it’s not it. My family sold my grandparents summer cabin on Whidbey Island last year. It was heartbreaking. So many precious memories are held there. I will miss it so much. Thinking about the cabin it finally hit me. I want a space that feels like the beach. Like how it felt being at the cabin. I have started to work on the room now with better focus. Fingers crossed it will finally feel right this time. 😃

Hi Steffi I wish I could borrow you for a day my bedroom is small (10x13) and I find it harder to deal with than a larger room. I like the idea of a floor length mirror next to the window perhaps not having a larger window was a blessing of sorts.

hmmm black accent wall behind the bed maybe great!!! you can always paint it back!!! ha hmm with a mirror over the bed. The black prints could be staggered on that side wall by the side doors. Oh Oh Oh forgive me, I am snowed in and itching for a project. Cheers

Would it work to use the biggest image size of potential wallpaper, centre it on the wall and paint the unwallpapered sides the background colour?

I say paint it all black. It will achieve the dark moody vibe without having to add more things and worry about a focal point (sorry this is coming from a minimalist lol) but honestly, make it a dark moody haven

Haha "dark moody haven" is my middle name. 😉 And you're right, going black makes such a statement that it takes care of a lot of the decorating for you. Although, I'd still want some art above my bed either way!
