After owning my Bentley Continental GT for 3 years here is what I love and hate about the car. Also it has lost over 100K in value, just normal Bentley stuff.

@@JohnEngel If my dealership had a 22 year old female mechanic, I wouldn't be doing my oil changes myself. The Bentley mechanic at my dealership was a 105 year old guy named Milton. Milton was nice and very knowledgeable, but smelled like a pungent mix of gasoline and ass, and couldn't keep from staring at my tits. Milton, if you're reading this, I still love you, and yes they are as perfect as you imagined...

I have 2005 Continental GT and I get over 18mpg on the highway. Either there is something wrong with your car or it’s hyperbole. I would get more than 5mpg if I had a hole in my gas tank. As for oil changes, a local Euro shop will do it for $150. The depreciation aspect is legitimate but also not out of line on a percentage basis. If you pay $150,000 for a new car and it is now worth $40,000, then it is at roughly 25% of original value. Likewise, if you bought a Cadillac in 2005 for $30,000 and it is now worth $7,500, then that is also about 25% of original value. Paying more for a car does not change statistics. I’ve owned several “exotic” cars over the years and none compare to my Bentley. Did I mention that my GT has been trouble-free? Maybe that doesn’t get subscribers though? I guess I’ll just keep driving my boring Bentley while everyone on KZfaq bitches about their car. Thanks for the review...
@JohnEngel
@JohnEngel 5 жыл бұрын
Brian Roman hey Brian and thank you for the comment. I do love my GT and it has also been trouble free. I was speaking hyperbolically for sure when I said 5mpg. I traded two of my Range Rovers for a 2007 Flying Spur, a 2007 Supercharged and a 2008 HSE. Total I had into those trucks was less than $16,000 after buying them through Manheim and repairing them in my shop. The Flying Spur was listed for $28,000, with 70k miles and as a "Mechanic's Special". I think I got a deal. I replaced the two batteries and that fixed the CEL, suspension fault, door locks, interior lights, navi unit, and finally the auto open/close trunk. Super happy. Listed it for sale and sold it for $30,000 to a local dealership in the Chicago area. Best flip I've done, and it was awesome driving that thing around for the few weeks.

The depreciation and gas mileage would bother me a bit.....it would be awesome not to get a cell signal because of the double pane glass, you can actually appreciate and pay attention to driving, and well ANY car that has a “ jack mode” would so be worth checking out ! ! I’ll just assume the first step is “ stop before jacking “

Bryan Smith you make some great points. The double pained windows do keep me off my cell phone. I’m not a fan that it needs to be put into jack mode to be jacked. I would much rather it be like every other car. If you don’t know about jack mode you can expect some costly repairs.

They're not like Bentleys of the 40s and 50s where only a dozen of this one model were made, and two dozen of this other model were made. Bently (much like Rolls Royce) will produce as many as they can sell. So in the real markets there's always at least a hundred of any given model/year you seek available out there, and that nukes the values hard. It's a buyer's market, and in a buyer's market prices fall hard.

Why, pray tell, would an oil change (even DIY) cost $200? What are you replacing, other than the oil and the filter? Is the dealer charging you $800 because he figures you are a member of the More Money Than Brains Club?
@JohnEngel
@JohnEngel 6 жыл бұрын
Julian Adams I agree with you 100% and I do think that the dealers know that most people who drive this car will pay to have it done. It takes a lot of oil, then add in the filter and you are well over 100 in just the needed parts. I have a video where I go over the exact DIY process and cost of the oil change.

Any plans on upgrading to the new Conti? I just bought a '14 speed, After buying my '08 brand new. They 2nd gen dropped like mad in price when the 3rd gen Conti came out. And I'm actually not a huge fan of the new one but I'll probably never buy another brand of cars. However, like you mentioned, servicing with Bentley is crazy expensive. I had done some workshop repairs on my '08. Cost me $10k to replace those parts when selling cause the Bentley dealership wouldn't take it otherwise, and it was impossible to sell privately. I live in Sweden so not a huge demand for Bentleys.

We'll know we're their when we find ourselves relegated to the slow lane. Autonomous cars will run in a high speed commuter lane. When push button elevators came on the scene, older people wouldn't ride them. There was no one at the controls! If you and I were on the eighteenth floor right now, would we be concerned with owning the elevator that brought us here? When we're sitting in traffic with autonomous vehicles passing us like we're standing still, we'll change up. That beautiful Ferrari, Bentley, Mercedes etc do nothing more than any conventional car. At this moment, our cars are all doing the same thing, they're sitting. At the turn of the previous century, the gentry kept their stables, horses, coaches and tack rooms. However, they wouldn't be seen dead driving them into the city. I'm in my sixties, I won't see it all. You're a young man. You will.

I Flick I really like your perspective. I also agree with a lot of what you say. I do agree there will be a day that no one drives a car, rather the car will drive us. I love cars so I am not too concerned with this. It's part of life, there will always be change and I am all for it.

@JohnEngel

Jeff Allinson Most people that buy these new most likely sell or get another one before they reach this type of depreciation. However because of this depreciation it opens the market up to people that would not be able to afford it at $180,000. It does play a large part in the whole economics of the Bentley brand though.

They buy this kinda car, use, until the end of warranty, then sell... or otherwise get another new... And you don`t care about the maintenance of the car... Then if you can`t afford, don`t buy, simple as that... When you going to the dealership, did you think your bill pays only oil? and few hour of labour? How the heck they pay rent, staff salaries, insurance and etc of the dealership... look, nice video and rest, but please... on all of these older bentley car videos, i constantly see people bitching about the rip off cost of the maintenance as a reason to not bother getting one. what i can't understand in these comments is -aren't you going to pay the same price for maintenance on a newer one just the same as an old one anyways??? so -so what??!! you're getting a car for ten times cheaper than it was, and you pay the same in maintenance on it as a new one!!! you still save huge not paying hundreds of thousands for it in the first place right???? they're not pieces of garbage that are going to break down like some ford focus after they're years old, so f*ck off with the stupid logic that these cars used are such a bad idea because of the maintenance price!!! it's just the same cost in maintenance as a newer one, but it's a cheaper car!!!!!
@JohnEngel
@JohnEngel 6 жыл бұрын
1 thank you for the comment and I agree with most of what you are saying. What I don’t understand is the need to tell people to F&$K off. These are great cars and anyone that gets one will enjoy it. However, it will cost more to maintain then a Ford Focus so that needs to be taken into consideration when purchasing one. Bentley dealerships are very expensive but you can get just as good service from specialize mechanics that are not under the Bentley mantle. I appreciate the comment but why so angry?
@mostpeoplearebots
@mostpeoplearebots 6 жыл бұрын
John Engel sorry i don't translate in the comments like i mean. i just mean it to the fact that in every single one of these videos that i watch regarding getting a used older bentley, which i'm shopping around for... it's never ending to see the exact same comments over and over saying it's not worth it because of the maintenance costs. and my f--k off statement is to the fact that people will pay for maintenance costs on an older to newer bentley just the same, except an older one will be cheaper to buy in the first place. ie; it will cost $800 for an oil change on an older one, and it will cost $800 for an oil change on a newer one... so, so what??!! it's the exact same, except the older is cheaper to buy! the cars aren't some hunks of junk that will cost you in maintenance because it will be breaking down after 30k miles or something like a ford focus or etc, would. so i wish these never ending comments would stop with their go nowhere logic, that isn't logical to me, is all. not meant against you. thanks for your review and comment!
