I don't know if I'd say "won't let you down." Benchmade's warranty is pretty great compared to spyderco. Plus spyderco's obsession with red lock tight doesn't speak volumes to their belief that their own knives could be maintained or disassembled. I've been told to pound sand when it came to having my spyderco military fixed under warranty, and it basically just needed a new scale because it chipped around the screw. After market would have had me covered if spyderco hadn't put it together with permanent thread locker. They are not as reputable in the warranty department as they should be considering their cost.

You are a funny gentleman. We are like giddy school children around knives. My wife has norwegiian ancestry, and early on in our marriage, I asked for a Norwegian Knife to honor her ancestry for my birthday. She got me a Helle Dokka. Beautiful Knife, but it came very dull from the factory (duller than a butter knife). Once we sharpened it, it is truly beautiful and purposeful. IT IS my back up knife, and I used it when I go camping. My Bugouts have been pretty reliable, and I put them through hard use. You must have received the one bad one in a while.

I’ve had numerous Benchmades over the years. Never had one go out. Not saying one won’t, but they’re not as fragile as people say in my experience. I think the problem is with people pulling back on the omega springs on one side only. You need to pull back on both sides of the Omega springs at the same time. If not you can expect problems.

Buy a Ganzo knife from AliExpress that uses a similar mechanism. You can steal the wire-spring (called an Omega spring I think) from the Ganzo to fix your Benchmade. Might come in faster than a replacement directly from Benchmade. I don't understand why they don't include **several** extra springs with each new knife...
@tg94702

Because Benchmade would rather you send the knife in and wait several weeks forcing you to buy a second knife because you can't live without one of their knives in your pocket.

I would suggest skipping step one(buying the Benchmade) and go right to step two. Buy the Ganzo. Save big bucks. Use it forever or until you lose it and buy another. The price penalty for buying American made knives is just ridiculous. China makes really good knives too. I would greatly prefer to buy American made knives, but they have priced themselves out of the market for the most part.

If you go to a local arts and craft store, you’ll be able to buy some memory wire. Buy some memory wire with a similar thickness to the broken omega spring. Take out then omega spring that is still intact as a template and all you’ll have to do is bend the memory wire to the same shape (or close enough) and cut it to length and you’ve got unlimited omega springs for under $5. Ive done it with my 940’s broken spring and now I just make them as I need 👍🏻

It's seen about as much use as your bugout did in the video, it usually goes in my pocket when I go into town (going into town is a monthly thing vs at home it's a PM2 or Shaman depending on what I'm doing in the yard. But even though I have the bailout in my pocket, I keep an old crkt m16-01kz, a Kershaw Launch 9, streamlight and CR123a batteries in a sunglasses case, and Spyderco Manix in my man-purse/backpack. And in the car there are a couple fixed blades and a Ka-Bar LDK in my wallet, and a gerber keychain knife (zip blade) on my keys, and you know I think I'm realizing I might have a problem...

I finally broke down and bought a Bugout with titanium scales from SMKW. It arrived with a semi-sharp blade that was off-center and had pretty serious lock-stick. The SMKW website describes the blade as 'satin finish' but it's the usual stonewash finish. I returned it with a note listing these quality problems and asked them to send a replacement that was free of defects. They issued me a refund, instead. Meanwhile, the $23 Bugout clone I bought from Ali Express continues to function well and remains in my EDC lineup. And for what it's worth, unless you have a 'real' Bugout to compare it to, I bet 99% can't tell it's a fake.

Same boat. I love Benchmade but absolutely hate the axis lock. Springs break all the time and, until recently, there were no aftermarket springs available. I ditched folders for three years because of this issue and went with small fixed blade instead. I'm moving back to folders now for fun and am getting a Spyderco Shaman mostly because of your videos. Hah. Hope all is well in Norge, man!

Yeah, the Omega springs is definitely an Achilles Heel for Benchmade. Omega spring is made from 304 steel. 316 is better in my opinion. That said, it's rare that an Omega spring will fail due to snapping.

3 omega springs broken in the last month. I was so confident it wasn’t a common enough issue to fret about it but here we are.

I feel so gutted for you my friend, they should already come with a spear set of omega springs in the box for the money they charge. But this is just a typical example of a knife loving person’s problem when companies don’t give proper support for every country. Hopefully you get your replacement faster than you got the knife 😘👍

I wonder what he would think of the Ritter Hogue mk1 g2? Same locking system with way better spings and it actually fits in your hand. The Bugout is too small for my hands too.

I'm sure it has already been said in the comments many times, but Omega springs can randomly fail at any time. That is the reason I no longer buy knives with this lock type. It happened to me on a BM I owned decades ago, very soon after I bought it. It's a super fun lock to play with, though.

Benchmade's quality control has dropped off in the last few years that I have noticed. Sad to see since they are one of the big knife manufacturers that has been around a while. Hopefully they dont fall into the same pit as gerber

I believe since you're outside the US benchmade will ship you new omega springs, if not there's some Etsy sellers who sell them but I'm not sure if they ship to Norway. Some people also have tutorials on KZfaq on how to make them with guitar wire

The horror..the horror. A friend of mine has that knife. I liked it on KZfaq, but really don't like it in hand. I have the rather cheap Spyderco Tenacius right now and like it way more than I thought I would! BUT I am interested in trying out that locking mechanism - S.O.G. has their own version and it looks like the right thing for me. The new Flash for instance! I hope you have a nice holiday in spite of your mishap with the Bogout.

I will admit that if I was really bugging out, or going to war, I would probably take a pm2 instead of any omega lock knife, BUT when I show my collection to my friends, everyone loves the bugout. People who have zero knowledge of knives beyond the cuttyness just seem to love the blade shape and the feel (g10 and ti... The grivory usually gets the tap test.. what dis?). I carry a bugout to work (construction) most days, when I have pro techs microtechs spydercos, hogues, quiet carrys, we knives, giant mice, trm's and a bunch of budget options. Bugout is a winner, but you have to budget for scales. This puts a new one with titanium scales on the under $200 club, even with extra springs. Android yes, I have extra omega springs, though I have yet to need one since my first *used* mini griptillian found in a field in a park in VT in 2005 (not a denial, just the facts). Easy to carry, lightweight and handsome. I have 4 of em.
