This time I'm at Coleford Leisure in Gloucestershire looking at camper vans and motorhomes, in the hope of finding my ideal vehicle. Or should I still go along with my original plan of converting a panel van?
Which will I go for. What would you do?
Here is the link to my first video: • The hunt for a Camper ...

completely the opposite to you! Probably because we stick to UK touring, but find a fixed bed and fixed table, with uncomfortable seats a waste of space! the two bench seats at the back are really comfy for lounging on wet/cold evenings and it takes two minutes to turn them into a lengthways double bed - and lengthways means you don't disturb your partner when getting up in the night. It's very individual. Best of luck with your search.

When buying a Motorhome consider the number of nights it’s been used rather than the mileage. A low mileage vehicle may have been in constant use by full timers for instance and therefore everything will have been used far more than you may think. The Autotrail is 10 years old and wouldn’t have cost that much new.

That’s a good point 👍 And yes, that particular Moho is older than I’d like and I’ve seen others younger & cheaper but with equally low mileage.

It's always interesting to hear someone else describing their preferences for a MH and campervan, and the reasons. My big personal preference is for a spacious front lounge, so I'm looking at Autotrail models. Second priority is a fixed bed, but to save on space and length, I'm looking at an overcab bed- which will be great for storing things like coats and light objects during the day. I'm not the most confident driver in larger vehicles, so ideally I'd want a campervan conversion as the body is narrower, but the priority that goes against that one is that I want maximum lounge space. As always there have to be compromises, so in my case I'm prepared to go for a 2.35m wide coachbuilt, and I'll have to just live with a bit of extra stress driving a wider vehicle on narrow country lanes etc. I'm hoping to manage with a length of 6.5 m or less to make parking easier, but I'm still not decided on how important that is. If, for example, there is a MH with a garage but its 7m long, I might take a long hard look at it. The desire for a garage space will add length, and that then conflicts with the desire to make parking easier and less stressful. As you said, only the individual knows what is best for them, but its very interesting to hear the various issues that can be raised by the different types of layout. E.g. I've heard that in high summer, because heat rises, overcab beds are warmer than you would want them to be. And I hadn't realised how expensive some of these MHs are! £43k for a ten year old coachbuilt MH? Wow....

Both vans had their good points! Personally, I like to have a garage. The position of the seat in the first one was off putting but they do other layouts. I do like your videos. You have a very pleasing style.

We have a 6.36 Malibu Campervan which is extremely comfortable of an evening, has a fixed bed and excellent garage for Storage. We also have no issues in terms of parking it or getting stuck at the end of a cul-de-sac etc. Whatever you buy you have to make comprises.

Out of the two shown, I preferred the first one. Just personal preference, as you stated. The bonus about the bespoke conversion, is you can have it exactly how you want it. You can have every feature you desire, where as buying a motorhome from one of the mainstream manufacturers, you are buying their idea. A bit like buying a suit off the peg or buying a tailored suit I guess… Horses for courses.

That is a very nice motor home, beware the van conversion. I bought a long wheel base Mercedes sprinter some 20yrs ago and had it converted to a two bed van, all singing and dancing, diesel heating, you name it and it had it. Looked very professional after having suitable decals applied. The access through the sliding door became a pain. You had to pull it at the right speed or it wouldn’t shut and noisy too. Get that Auto sleeper for 42k it looks nice and great inside. Good luck

Autosleeper, way more practícal, and the broadway model is very nice and more space. I did my one van convertion, and I asure you that in the end it will probably more expensive. All the best

The Chauson belted seats were quite annoying, there seemed to be a large void at the other side, almost as if the whole seat had been pulled away from the wall. Its all personal choice for what will suit you and how you will use the van. One thing to bear in mind with the French Bed is how easy it is to get in and out of, especially for two, some you have to almost climb over the other person to get out of bed. If you're happy to go up to 7m, then there are a lot of other options with fixed beds that can be 2 singles or a huge King sized bed, with large garage under that might be worth considering.

Unfortunately both makes you've mentioned suffer from water ingress (apparently), so on that basis, I would look at a German make or go for your self build. It might be prudent to name the converter here to see if anyone has any dealings good/bad. Also, be careful of the Ford base, as there is a big problem with failing fuel injectors and the degradation of wet the timing belts. (Well documented on the internet) Good luck

Taken from a review by the Caravan & Motorhome Club on the Auto Sleeper - Auto-Sleepers’ formula of GRP bodywork and aluminium lower skirting is as good as any when it comes to water-tightness. Competent. Consistent. Comfortable.
The Broadway is a proven performer with plenty of character. Having said that, the research I have done shows that Auto Sleepers aren't without their faults, but then if you read some of the forums, it appears that just about every make/brand of MoHo have their problems, including the German ones. You pays your money and takes your chances. Btw, the van conversion would be done by www.youtube.com/@VanologyConversions

If you are mainly travelling the UK I would be looking for the habitation door on the nearside, Chausson all on the offside for European travel.....just my personal opinion......

If you are planning going abroad more than the uk which by the way does not want motorhomes parking anywhere other than than overpriced campsites, I would buy a lhd vehicle . Once you are over the channel you’re on the correct side of the vehicle for driving.

Hi there, sounds like you are looking for a similar model to the one we have just bought. Try looking at a Pilote 626d Evidence, you will find a good review on KZfaq from MMM magazines with Peter Vaughan. Good luck. Also be aware of underslung LPG it’s becoming harder to get hold of, we’ve opted for flogas filled bottles

id go for the motorhome over a self build one, far more luxury and better finish and just looks the part, a self built van will just always be that and only worth 40k to you as a personnal build.

That bed is awkward to get in and out of. Especially if you needed to get out without disturbing your partner. I'd want an island bed and most of those seating arrangements look terribly uncomfortable.
