I would like the idea of a legacy game if it had a magnetic board and those thin vinyl magnets instead of stickers so you can re-start, or backtrack if needed. It would also allow you to sell the game if its not your thing. I personally trade and sell my games a lot so I can try new games so I have yet to try a legacy game for this reason.

This is my opinion also on Legacy games. I played two Legacy games. I played several "campaign" games. The only difference between the two concepts are that Legacy is permament and campaign isn't. There are zero gameplay difference between opening an enveloppe and adding a new sticker to add rules in the rulebook and reading an entry with new rules in a campaign book. There are also zero difference between adding a sticker on the board where a card on an enveloppe tells you to to place a new feature and adding a token on the board during game setup where a campaign book tells you to. There is also zero gameplay difference between ripping a card and throwing it in the trash and taking a card and returning it to the box for all further games in the campaign. The difference is not in the gameplay, but in "feel". Writting on the board or card gives a higher feeling of ownership of something. I'd rather have my game replayable than to give me a feeling of ownership over a card... In fact, Legacy can have a significant problem in my experience that is not present in campaign games. In campaign games, the host can read the new rules and prelude to the next game before playing. He'll be able to teach said new rules before the game. In Legacy games, everyone learns the new rules at the same time, and many times people were confused in my experience. Reading rules aloud from a book is one of the worst ways to learn a game. Having someone digest and understand the rules before hand and explaining them is the way to go.

@@martinlarouche4418 Yeah it's hard to play legacy game without making rules mistakes here and there. So I think legacy games should be more relaxed and fluffy instead of trying to be strategic and deep.

That’s not a legacy game, that’s a campaign game, and existed before you were born. It’s like you’re saying the problem with tile laying is that it isn’t deck building. You’re asking for a campaign.
@martinlarouche4418

@@Trevin_Taylor Mechanically, there are zero differences between campaigns and Legacy games. Evrrything present in any Legacy game can be made non-permanent and turned into a campaign game with no mechanical changes... just component changes. His comment was therefore very valid. There are several mechanical differences between a tile laying and a deckbuilding game. They are mechanically different. At their core, Legacy games are simply a subset of campaign games that are playable only once due to the one use nature of their components.

Martin Larouche your last paragraph invalidates the previous. Explaining how they’re different doesn’t make them the same. You aren’t making the points you think you’re making.

It’s so weird this game was nominated the same year as Cartographers. They are both very similar except Cartographers is a bit meatier while also still suited well for families.

My copy arrived the other day and it’s pretty fun. Can play a game (including set-up) in about 20 minutes and, while the rules are pretty simple, the legacy adds a bit of ongoing completion. For just £30 I think it’s great value.

German companies are not that interested in making solo modes, as it traditionally has not been a big market for them. They either don't have someone on their team who can develop them, or don't think it is worth the money to outsource.

Doesnt seem like bad game, but nothing new under the sun. I dont know why this was nominated for the award. Games like Cottage Garden, Indian Summer ,Bear Park, Tiny Towns etc. all seem to have more interesting choices in the game.

I'm not familiar with all these games, but certainly Spiel wrote that open letter to publishers making it clear that they evaluate the whole game - box, rules etc... for the purposes of their award. And that at least during the year they wrote that letter, there was a serious dearth of games whose rule books met their minimum criteria.

I think this just shows legacy games need to limit the total # of games, I think the sweet spot is around 8-12 games perhaps the legacy aspect would have been better with less games.

Except that the games are so short (20-30 mins) that a series of 3 games that comes in each envelope feels like a single game, so the length is just about right.

Interesting review - thanks. It may be unfair because the designer and nomination raised expectations - but this looks very average. I’m not the biggest fan of Tiny Towns - but that looks to have more charm, innovation and variety than this. And for basic polyomino tile laying, I don’t see this competing well with Barenpark or Spring Meadow.

I just can’t get behind legacy games. I like having games in my closet for years and years that I can turn back to and play. Buying a game that is over and done with after 10 plays (yeah, this one is more and you can play after) is just a hard concept for me to grasp. Admittedly, I’ve never really played one. So I can’t judge from personal experience
@synnical77

It shouldn't be that hard to accept the concept of a game that can only be played through once. The vast majority of games can be perpetually played. Why can't there be a minuscule amount that offer a new experience. I think it's something that every board gamer should experience at least once. It creates an atmosphere and bond between the people that you involve in the journey to complete one. Completing Pandemic Season 1 with three other people is an experience that I'm so glad that I was involved in. I'll never forget the culmination of those playthroughs and I'm satisfied with never playing it ever again. I had a great experience with Clank: Legacy as well. Such a unique experience that I'm satisfied with and also perfectly fine with never revisiting again. It's not a direct comparison but it's kind of like asking why someone would watch a movie at the cinema for an inflated price for a single viewing when they could wait for it to be released on DVD and allow them to rewatch it forever. It's simply a different experience, a different context. FYI, I haven't been to a movie theater since 2003 and I don't think I'll do so again. I do understand why many still go to those however.

@@synnical77 Kind of garbage to say that everyone should try legacy games at least once. There's an infinite amount of things in life that someone is going to say you should try at least once. Legacy games are wasteful with no resale value. I prefer things to be preserved.

I can see the argument for playing a grand, epic legacy game (although it doesn’t particularly appeal to me). I can’t see the appeal of trying to make a legacy experience out of a small, generic puzzle game - if I ever decide to go for a legacy game, it definitely won’t be this one.

The single game, yes. The campaign only if people use placeholders instead of some specific game material. Some of the stickers can be drawn instead, some of the stickers shared upfront. *spoiler* but at some point people get differently shaped tiles based on their score, this can be handled by a placeholder, if people are willing.

The sense I get from this review is that My City isn't for me. It gives me the same vibe as Charterstone, which is to say a single interesting core mechanic, somewhat artificially stretched out over a huge number of games for the sake of making it a "legacy" game. If this were a video game, I'd be tempted to say that it looked "grindy".

Learn how to play this game in 24 games. So, maybe if they make Monopoly a legacy game, it'll be nominated for an award too? Game 1 - race around the board and collect money for passing Go. Game 2, players can now purchase properties. Game 3, players can now draw Community Chest cards. Game 4, players can now purchase single houses on properties. Game 5, players can draw Chance cards and Go To Jail space is activated. Game 6, Railroad spaces are activated. Game 7, multiple houses can now be built. Game 8, Utilities are unlocked, as are Tax spaces. Game 9, hotels can now be purchased. There you have it, learn how to play Monopoly in 9 games, where's my award?

I highly doubt there's a story, except some sort of whitewashed colonizing narrative. "Manifest Your Destiny," I mean no one at Kosmos thought to change that? And the title is basically a placeholder for an idea, like a working title that somehow got published.

Wow this was nominated for a spiel. It has to be because of the designer and nothing more. The last few years some of the games being awarded and/or winning sort of surprises me (l.l.a.m.a. anyone). The game looks bland and even the rule book looks bland. I don’t like polyomino games so this is an easy pass for me, but why does this game even need to be a legacy game? There are so many games available that are so much more compelling that I am pretty sure this will disappear because of its generic nature. Thanks for the review.
