How did you know I need to organise my photos better? I do have a copy of Lightroom I may have to start using now that I understand it better. Very useful video, thank you for taking the time to make it.

If you use Lightroom is much easier and streamlined to just import, copy to working ssd, and even create a backup in a second location...

Hi Zach. Great video, as always. Quick question: what brand of SSD drive do you use? You mention in the beginning of the video that for your regular hard drives you use LaCie orange ones (which I do too). Also, how big is your SSD drive? Thank you so much.

I have the GDrive & SanDisk versions in 1 and 2 TB respectively. They are both really fast, small and have worked great for me!

Hey Zach ! Great video and very informative. I have one question, So once you do the last back up to drop box do you just go to your SSD and delete the folder of your last job? And if you do, will LR remember the photos if you ever need to go back to the catalog and if it’s on a different HD that has a different letter assigned to it? Thanks again!

Hey there. Yes, I do format my SSD after it gets full, but I make sure I have an exact copy on my backup/archive drive. That way if I need to go back into Lightroom, I can just relink from the new location. It's really easy and quick to just relink if needed.

@@TheZachMendez can you explain a little on how to relink? So once I’m done with the CAT on the SSD I should copy all into the HDD and I’m confused on how to relink? Sorry for multiple questions lol

Hi Zach, very useful. I wanted to ask, do you never delete your "capture" folder? Do you save all of the pictures you take? Even in weddings?

Just stepping in … 😊 I think you should cull and re-cull until you are 1000% confident in your choices … then delete the “capture” / “dump” folder AFTER you backed-up your final “selects” The memory card gets re-formated after “delivery” Personally i don’t embrace the “data hoarding” approach where you keep everything you shoot (incl all the bursts, bad shots etc.). I’m keeping only the selects that i will edit and deliver + eventually few other related shots from the same “group” that i still like but will not make it to “final” delivery. For sure i will not save forever all the memory card “dumps” Storage it’s cheap nowadays but if you consider a 3-2-1 backup strategy with off-site cloud storage, suddenly you want to be selective about what you save. Just my 2 cents 😊 .

Thanks Zach! How do you rate Capture One compared to Lightroom? I'm thinking of moving from Adobe to Capture One but I'm also scared because I'll lose photoshop

Haha I’m glad that you are finding the video useful! Thank you for watching! To answer your question about C1, it’s a great question that I have asked myself before. I’m not sure if I have a great answer though! I do like C1 and the workflow can be similar to my Lightroom workflow. Like you, I would only be hesitant because I use many of the other Adobe apps & it wouldn’t really make sense for me to switch. Also, I have a collection of Lightroom presets, both my own and others that I frequently use. I decided to just buy the Fujifilm version of C1 outright so I would be able to use it with my Fujifilm files without giving myself another monthly subscription payment. If you wanted to switch completely and you’re only worried about losing photoshop, I’m sure there are alternatives to photoshop out there. I just don’t know enough about them to recommend something. I hope this helps & thanks again!

@@jamesj4998 Capture One has so many features that you'll rarely need Photoshop - I bought Affinity Photo just in case, but usually C1 is more than sufficient for all the edits I need. The workflow is different from Lightroom, for something like what Zach showed here, you'd make a new session which automatically creates all the directories needed. It takes a bit of time to get used to the file management in Capture One, but it's just as usable and fast.
