Marian is exactly right. The U.S. is vast. Every state, even every county and municipality, has its own laws with their own law enforcement agencies. It can be difficult to track down criminals or defendants from one jurisdiction to the next. With the internet now, it makes things better. But in the 90s, we were dealing with faxes and phone calls lol.

I think the reason My Cousin Vinny is recognized as a classic nowadays is because comedies are rarely given the same critical attention that dramas are. But if a comedy holds up through time (and this one definitely does!) it's easier to see what a gem it is

The judge was the great actor, Fred gwynne. A very underrated actor, he did a tv show in the late 50s early 60s called, The Munsters. We was Frankenstein monster, but very smart, had a big weird family! And they really tackled some tough issues, but in a comical way! He was also in an 80s Stephen King movie called, Pet Cemetery!!

One thing I love about the sleep issue is that he sleeps soundly in the jail while there is a riot or something happening, because being from NYC he's used to sleeping through the sounds of crime and sirens and crowds and traffic and whatever, but the sounds of the small country town like the factory and the pigs and the owl, he is not. LOL This movie is a classic in my family because my parents are from the Bronx and Brooklyn and they legitimately pronounce "youths" the way Joe Pesci does in this so to this day we'll start in with "two utes" and "no dad it's yoUTHS" xD

5-star film. Pesci became a household name. Macchio showed he was more than just a karate kid. And the beautiful Marissa showed us she was more than just good looking. Herman Munster is in play. Great film!

The Judge is played by Fred Gwynne non other than Herman Munster of the classic tv show. He had a very fascinating and tragic life. He lost two children sadly. He was a great Artist and wrote and illustrated a few children’s books. As well as being a Naval Veteran and Harvard graduate for the arts. He was an amazing actor and man.

Marion is correct. Each State makes its own laws...mostly. There are Federal laws which apply to all the states, but for the most part each state makes its own laws.

So many factors make this film fantastic. The humor, acting, quick wit....just rolled so well with a fabulous script. I gotta say, .Marisa Tomei is so drop-dead gorgeous in this! Edit: one suggestion, for another movie equally good, is "Oscar"...with Stallone. A largely ignored gem that i think is one of his best. Won't give it away, but it is awesome.

I saw this pop up on my home page and thought - "Oh, heck yeah! They're going to LOVE this movie". And I'm leaving this comment before even watching. I know it in my bones.

Another classic, this time from the 80's, is "Crocodile Dundee". I know both of you will love it.

Yeah, the guys that committed the crime was arrested in another state (Georgia), and each state does have other laws and some of the penalties are harsher in some states than others. I don't know if you have watched it already but a very intense "courtroom" movie to watch is "A Time to Kill."

I always enjoy watching this film and watching reactors watch this film. The story was written by a lawyer, so relies fairly heavily on actual law and procedure. I worried a little that you might struggle with US law, but you actually did pretty well. You got the idea of arrest one day and arraignment the next day, and that it's at arraignment that the charges are read (established), the plea is entered (guilty or not guilty), and bail set. Vinny, being unfamiliar with criminal court procedure, tried to make 'explanations' during arraignment (essentially trying the case before pleading or submitting evidence), which did not go well. Also, courts are very formal and those attending are expected to dress formally and speak with reverence to the judge; judges can and do find those who don't show the proper respect as being in contempt of court and you can receive fines and/or jail time. Too many people have grown up with the only experience of courts being TV fiction; in those fictional stories, cases are presented as being won or lost on the basis of 'gotcha' moments; that's not how the legal system works. Courtroom procedure is a matter of presenting your case, bolstered by evidence and witness testimony, to argue your assertion of guilt or innocence. To make the most of the court's expensive and limited time, all sides in a case share access during Disclosure to evidence and witnesses. There's no surprises, no 'gotchas'. Sometimes there's a surprise witness that shows up last minute, but mostly it's all shared before going into court. Vinny eventually got the hang of procedure and crushed it. To be clear, there's state law and there's federal law. Federal law, passed by US Congress, is the same in every state. State law, passed by state legislature, only applies in the state where it was made law. And state law (and its procedures) differs from one state to another. Some states have the death penalty, each state has different ranges for duration of imprisonment, and crimes differ from one state to another (you had a good example with marijuana). Part of what makes this film work is the issue of miscommunication. And a lot of the miscommunication is cultural differences. The defendants' home state of New York is a thousand miles from where they were arrested in Alabama. It's very 'New York' to repeat a shocking question someone says to a New Yorker ("I shot the sheriff? I shot the SHERIFF?!"). Also, it's hard for people to sleep through unfamiliar sounds, especially when they're loud. But in New York, the noise of people arguing and fighting is pretty normal, so Vinnie was able to easily sleep through a prison riot. No, this little Alabama town had good, honest folks in it. They spoke honestly about what they saw. They just didn't have the auto expertise that Lisa did.

I find it frustrating when I see new viewers of this moving automatically thinking that there's some conspiracy and that the judge and prosecuting attorney are corrupt. That seems like a reflexive response by so many. Yet the truth is that everyone in the court proceedings is acting honestly. These aren't evil men, by any means.

Getting 'stiffed' means that you don't get paid for services that you are owed. If a taxi driver gives you a ride, you pay when you get to your destination. If you run away without paying the cab driver, then the cab driver has been 'stiffed.'

It's practically impossible not to fall at least a little in love with Marisa Tomei.

Joe Pesci? His most iconic role is in JFK. Check it out. Awesome movie with an awesome cast and unforgettable score. And, by that way, I don't know where you got that false information but MY COUSIN VINNY has always been highly regarded (as can be seen by the nominations and awards it received when it came out.

Yeah in the US the law enforcement agencies are mostly separate between different cities, counties, and states. Though they do talk to each other. Laws are very different between states. For example in most of the country anyone without a criminal history can carry a gun without any issues. It's not even unusual. In places like New York though it's very restricted. In states like California you see giant freeway billboards advertising Marijuana, but in much of the country it's a serious crime.

One of the best comedies.

I can tell the subtitles were done with a British slant. Using "tyre" instead of "tire" and "Honour" instead of "Honor". Lots of other issues that made it a non-American translation.

Ironic, at one time many years ago, Joe changed his name, he wanted to be a singer. He played clubs, did some small concerts, cut an album or 2. But I think it was DeNiro or Scorcese or Harvey Keitel, that convinced him to try acting.
