In this episode of building my dream shop we continue with Siga Majrex install which includes the interior corner detail I have been waiting to work on. We also need to perform some plumbing work, so we are officially plumbers now too right?
What do you think of the corner detail with the Majrex?

Kyle, when you say "listen to my voice" in the corners, it reminds me of the amount of insulation R-value and sound proofing I had to achieve when building AV recording studios. You are constructing this shop as if it were a sound proof, air tight recording facility. Well done, and I appreciate your attention to detail.

Definitely wet both surfaces with a liberal amount of glue. In over 20 years, I have never had a problem because of using to much pvc cement. All kinds of bad stuff happens when you don't use enough. Can you imagine the time to locate and rework that would be caused by your plumber having to fix an air leak in that wall for inspection.

Have to agree with you. That is inconsiderate to not even read and follow the directions on the cans as to properly glue pvc pipe and fittings. Being that fussy about his own work and careless about the plumbing, I lost respect there. 25% of improperly and carelessly installed pvc connections leak.

If you show this to the inspector it will fail. At least it should. Vent piping still needs to be pressure tested to 5psi, which also is the equivalent of 10’ of water column. There was not even remotely enough solvent cement on those joint. I agree with not using primer only if code allows (plenty of 3rd party testing showing joints being actually stronger without primer), but only with a commercial grade solvent like IPS weld-on 781, but even then you need to solvent weld properly. Start solvent cementing the female socket, then the male end and if need be, back to the female end again. Solvent welding chemically fuses the pipe together, it doesn’t glue it. 100% put a pressure test on your plumbing piping before covering those walls. I will almost guarantee it fails, especially that bottom joint near the slab. When the shop smells like rotten eggs, you’ll know why. Best of luck, you’re gonna need it.

Awesome. Every time I watch you apply the green Rissan tape I am astounded how well you do it. I recall doing my basement with Rissan and how difficult it was to not make a mess with the Rissan tape sticking to itself. You are the master in applying Siga tapes that are so sticky.

A bubble in the majrex or any other comparable vapour barrier is actually wanted in the corners. Since the building is going to move over the years, the majrex (or comparable) is supposed to be put up with a "dehnungsschlaufe", which roughly means expansion loop.

Primer/cement is a chemical reaction where the primer not only cleans the PVC but physically softens the pipe then the glue "welds" the joint together. You'll never use too much primer (aside from making a mess) but you can use too much glue. If you read the can, it will say to wipe away excess glue because it can actually make the pipe brittle. I was nervous seeing you not apply glue to the inside of the fitting. I hope it formed a good bond for you because getting to it later would be a nightmare. Thanks for opening yourself up to allow us all to learn and grow from watching/following along and having the courage to withstand what I can only imagine is constant critiquing from all angles in these comments.

I'm not a trained plumber but I've cemented tons of PVC. I had an old timer tell my 14 rotations around with the primer. Ans also apply the cement to the fitting or pipe before the primer totally dry. Also, a nice square cut on the pipe is essential because the fittings are tapered and the majority of the holding power is at the bottom of the fitting.

Yeah. I had some HVAC contractors install a new furnace. They only used the "purple" primer on the PVC vent pipe. Months later, I noticed water dripping aka condensate. Called them up, and that tech found, NEVER glued the connections! "Primer is to clean the pipe fittings, then your coat both connections with PVC cement!" So lucky the pipes didn't separate as that would been CO2 poisoning...

Is that a new custom tool belt? Think I saw a badger? I'm down to badger vs diamondback. Tired of my hammer hanging down and getting caught on stuff. I'm leaning towards diamondback. I like the flat bar holder since I carry flat bars on a roof a lot. Badger's is built in and I'm not sure it's wide enough. Would be cool if a store carried them locally so I could check them out.

I’ll always remember when I was looking for a new to me house with my friend who was a new realtor, I showed her how to critically look at a house for how well it was built and maintained. I took her to a tract home in a new neighborhood of production houses. We looked at one house where it was obvious that the ceiling wasn’t coming square to the corners if you looked at it hard. I looked at her and said, “Now you know why they sell crown molding.” In the three months it took me to finally find a house that was custom built for a very obsessive engineer***, she knew how to tell if a home was well built and maintained or if they’d just put some lipstick on the pig as they got it ready to flip. ***How do I know was built by an obsessive engineer? Well, his ex-wife told me so. That and the 93 change orders that I found in the building plans and documents she left me. In the 19 months it took to get the house finished, she said he drove everyone crazy including her. So she divorced him. Their divorce was final three months after the house was finished and she got to keep it. Who said life is fair?

Kyle - I'm a keen DIY-er and take away a lot from your videos in terms of standards for myself. But my day job is about as far from this kind of work as is possible (I'm a desk-bound lawyer who does something to do with investment funds) and I reckon I have taken away as much in terms of being humble and always willing to learn lessons, try new techniques, hold yourself to higher standards than anyone else on the team, etc. My firm probably won't sign off on my novel training programme to make all our junior lawyers watch 40 hours (and counting) of videos about building a workshop, but they really should.

Very interested in doing this in my shop with the Rockwool. Question is, what do you do for the roof where there will not be a ceiling? My trusses will be completely open. I guess I "could" use Rockwool and a vapor barrier to hold it in place but that's not aesthetically pleasing. May just spray foam it but that's expensive and if I'm doing that I might as well just spray the whole building.

Does the SIGA seal in moisture? My question is, without power for a week, in the off chance that happens (assuming you have exterior wrap), does your building become a giant plastic sleeping bag? I fail to see how any of these modern builds with interior and exterior wrap (assuming the products perform per manufacture specifications) don't turn into mold factories. Sure, the rockwool cannot hold mold - but moisture can. Can your walls wick moisture? or does it just flow down. Do all new builds need wall drains? All of this is puzzling to me. You are adding maybe 3 - 4R with the wraps, but adding 100% dependability on grid and a central air system. Seems counter productive. Seems as though building now is not just building a 100 year product. It's building a 150 year product that has a laundry list of dependencies.
@user-ru2jy6qm2j
@user-ru2jy6qm2j 3 ай бұрын
Also, to add. You are 100% trusting the products. Did Pfizer make the SIGA Majrex? Sure, Radon is out, but what are you trapping inside your building for the next 15 years of off gassing.
