I bought the DC19 12 years ago, washed the washable filter every 4 to 5 months but the suction got less and less over the years. Never knew there was a filter in the bottom until I ordered a new washable filter and got the HEPA-filter with it. Trying to figure out what to do with that one brought me to this video. I exchanged the charcoal colored cake which once was the original HEPA filter with the new one and have a brand new DC19. It is beyond me why the manual doesn't mention that one. The washable filter compartment has a sticker on the housing with instructions. The HEPA filter has no indicator whatsoever. Your instructions are invaluable, even after all this time!

I agree with the comment below - from experience I have found most dysons get a sort of "mud" build up - you can see it when you take the top part off the cannister and look up the hole into the top part. If you tap (and keep tapping) it on the ground all this mud tyhat is caked up there breaks up and falls out and it makes a huge difference to the suction. People throw their dysons out - stick ones included, without realising this.

Cleaning/changing filters is a good start. However you may need to strip the canister assembly for a more thorough clean. It really makes a huge improvement.

Hi, great how too vid! I have a dc29 with a Hepa filter on the bottom of the machine, under the dust bin. Can these filters be washed, or do you replace them with a new filter? Mine is black on the white (underneath) section. Cheers.

Dc19 looks exactly like the Dc08. Whats the diffrrence if any or did they change motor /filter sizes?

I have this same vacuum. When I press the start button I runs for a few seconds and then I hear a flapper shutting type sound and it stops sucking completely. Is this caused by a dirty filter.

We have cleaned our DC19 and inserted 2 new filters, and the machine now has excellent suction, which is fine for the whole house except for a patch of newer bamboo carpet - it is now impossible to push the vacuum cleaner head over this piece of carpet - how can we reduce the suction for this patch of carpet?

1. Plastic bits of mine have broken off. It is several years old, but I was expecting it to last much longer considering what I spent on it. 2. Good to know how to put the front filter back in correctly - I had it on top of the yellow holder, not underneath.....

Hi Alec, you pulled out back filter: yellow frame + blue insert, then you assembled back only new blue insert. So yellow frame is not necessary?

Hi, I have the same DC19 but I've a problem. Big dust bypasses the canister and go straight on the filter... So after a month of cleaning I have empty canister and all dust go on pre-engine filter (the upper one). What's wrong?

Dyson´s are crap, noisy, the handle and hose is a joke. Bought a Nilfisk, what a relief.
