So this is my second year growing them, I live in South Africa, KZN. Thanks to you, I was able to save my plants from rust, and now I'm also getting a lot of buds. And I also managed to get 2 of them to bear fruit. So thanks for all the awesome tips.

@OneGuyOnline2 have you been growing them from seed or cutting? If from seed it could take a few of years before they bear any buds, and if from a cutting then it can couple of years before bearing buds. If you have been growing them longer then try pruning you plant back, that will help get the plant to start producing buds, also once every few months give it some liquid calcium, it is easy to make, and that will help your plants out. But don't stress I live in South Africa, and my spring starts in September, so when spring comes around on your side wait till you are on the last month of spring and then start pruning the plant, that should help as well. I wish you the best and hope these tips help.

Hi Richard, I know your talking about your dragon fruit plants but I cannot help but notice the gorgeous pompia mostrousa citrus tree on your yard. And you do have great dragon plants. So envious of your weather that allows you to grow them outside.

Thanks Again Richard for the informative videos. I was amazed this year as I picked my final 2 fruits last week which was the end of February. They were soft and ready even though they were not as red on the outside as the ones I picked in the summer and fall. I was surprised that the inner meat was dark red and super good. I initially thought they would not as good since they didn’t fully turn red on the outside probably due to all the rain and being winter and not strong sunlight, however I was so happy they that they tasted so good. Thanks to you I am becoming a successful dragon fruit grower !

Hello I just wanted to thank you for sharing your knowledge about the dragonfruit. I live in Tucson and I'm growing some myself. I didn't get very many fruit last year. I had a lot of flowers but it seemed that I couldn't get them to pollinate. I was hoping you might be able to send me a cutting of one of your self pollinating variety. If you know of any place I could purchase them would also be helpful. Thank you Sandy

so I learnt something today well my flowers were opening, if there is a drizzle happening the same time as you flowers are opening, the drizzle stops them from opening but if you put a portable gazebo tent preventing any rain from falling in the flowers then they will open.

Such amazing a lot of dragon fruits . But why you planted only in the pot since you have a big lot available? I think better planting directly in the ground.

Great update, thanks. I'm experimenting with a faster way to get Dragonfruit growing . I see no benefit to having the 3-4ft tall main stem that grows to the top of the trellis, as far as fruit production is concerned, and it takes a while for it to grow that high, not to mention all the energy and time lost with any pruning lower branches.....so I'm growing some that I tip the main stem right away so it will have 4-6 secondary branches right at the bottom just a few inches off the soil level, and then I will let those all grow upward and each form 3 or so third branches. To keep all the branches growing up and not falling over, I will have a 1/2 diameter pole in the center that has a bicycle rim with all the spokes removed except 4 of them so the wheel hub stays attached and then I will remove the axle in the wheel hub so theres a hole for the center pole to slide through. This will allow me to slide the bicycle wheel up the center pole as the branches grow upward, and keep them all pointing up and contained inside the wheel. I think this method is going to work very well, will give a more traditional Cactus look to the plant and shave many months off the grow time before getting fruit. I bet I can get a cutting to harvest time well under 1 year by growing from the ground up and eliminating the single 3-4ft stem that has to grow before your branch canopy can start to grow.

Another idea I have is instead of using a bike wheel or hoop to contain the branches upward growth which will create a round plant, I'm also going to experiment making a narrow and wide rectangle branch containment frame that's only 3" wide and have the length adjustable. That way instead of having a big round plant, I can train the branches to fan out and all grow flatter and have a wider looking Dragon fruit tree that can be put against a wall and not protrude out more than a few inches away from the wall. I guess I could just do the same thing and train it to attach to the wall but then the plant wouldn't be movable, so I like the idea off keeping it off the wall a few inches. It would also improve airflow and fruit growing surface area not being attached to a wall. Going to try both the bike wheel and rectangle ideas, and see how they work.

You have a wonderful channel ! I have a question about the dragon fruit trellis, as you know the plant contains a lot of water which causes an increase in weight on the trellis Have you ever had a trellis collapse?, apparently you don't paint the trellis every season to protect against the rain, approximately how long does the trellis survive in outdoor conditions since it is made of wood? I have some plants and I am considering building a concrete trellis and planting them in the ground, and apparently the cheapest way is to make it out of concrete in all respects - both in terms of initial cost and in terms of maintenance and survival over time, thanks!

I recent started grafting dragon fruits. It's autumn in Sydney and the temperature is between 10C-22C and some nights are quite cold. Yet, I get 100% success rate from about 8 grafts. I put a wet towel inside a bag to form a humid greenhouse for each graft. I have a question how how long I have to wait until I can exepct to see flowers. I watched one video from someone who claimed that it is possible to get flower in the 1st season (under 1 year) if you graft on a mature stalk that drops down from above. Can you confirm this? I got excited about this info that I got a couple stalk of dragon fruit red flesh and made about 15 grafts to my Vietnamese white dragon fruit host.

Hi Richard, I am in Simi Valley(Ventura County) where can I get some of those black plastic nursery pots. I am starting to expand the amount of dragon fruit plants, and hope to get where you are at soon. I previously made a few permanent spots for them, but hope to use the pots to make better use of the space I have. Thanks. Oh btw can I get a couple of those Palora cuttings, or other types. Thanks

Thanks for sharing Richard. My Dragons have grown about 10 inches in our hot winters in Rio Grande Valley Texas. Glad you have been able to produce fruit even during the winter months. Check out my trellis build video tomorrow morning, you might like this method, they dont bend or give way to the added weight as your dragons grow and they will last years and years and keep straight. Have a great weekend.
