This is the pacing and strategies I used for the entire year while teaching 6th grade Ancient Civilizations. This video was inspired by ‪@toocoolformiddleschoolblog‬ who shared her entire year in lesson plans and it helped me so much during my first year in this content area.

This is so helpful! What kind of notes do you have them take? I’m going into my second year and also use BJU!

I use the PowerPoint slides BJU provides through Teacher Tools Online. I edit them down because there is so much info in those slides!

The last two years my class did a project on the book of Esther where they summarize each chapter (its a short book), and then they do character sketches of the main characters. We close out the study by watching Sight and Sound's Queen Esther play (it is phenomenal and they love it every year). I’m so glad this was useful for you. We do a trip to DC every two years and have made Sight and Sound part of the trip. Absolutely incredible work that they do.

I switched over from public school and Im teaching this curriculum for the 2nd time. This year we got through Israel by Christmas. I am drowning! There's so much info. How do you choose what matters and what to skip? Does your school have a scope and sequence? I teach 5 preps. Anything would be helpfu!!

It can be so overwhelming. I work backwards. What do I want them to know when we are finished with the unit? Then I create the assessments with that in mind. From there, I can choose what to cut from the lessons and what to focus more deeply on.

So is your midterm cumulative? Ours doesn’t have to be for 6th grade but I’ve considered it.

The December midterm is all Quarter 1 and 2 content. The end of year final is Quarter 3 & 4 only.

@@ThatNewTeacher how often did you assign the workbook pages? Did you assign them for homework? I had several new students this year from public school whose parents flat out told me their child would not be doing homework, since they didn't in ps. I ended up using class time often to complete them. Needless to say, we only got 1/2 way through the textbook.

@@lilyleanda I assign workbook pages 2-3 times per week (we do not complete the entire workbook and that's okay with me). On assignment days, I lecture for 25 minutes and leave the other 20 minutes to work. Some kids can finish in that much time, others will take work home. I only give true homework when I believe it is absolutely necessary to meet learning goals or is part of a larger project, like History Fair. At my school parents cannot opt out of homework. Students will be graded on all assignments given and teachers are allowed to give daily homework, I just prefer not to.

Do you use BJU’s slides for notes or do you make your own?

I download their slides and edit them to be my own. I shorten them WAY down and add more pictures.

What are “Nation Notebooks”?

They are workbooks. Each student gets assigned a nation to research and present at the History Fair.
