Today marks the 1 year anniversary of my father's passing. Along with my mother, Rose Ellen, James Ernest Scott, was the young dad who adopted me, raised, reared me, and honestly, looked out after me my entire adult life and to his very last breath. I'd garner to say, watching out over me all the more even now as I feel his presence often. He was a deeply felt, loving man, and I was lucky to have 52 years or so with him. He blessed my life, my brother Jay's, and certainly my mother's. I'd been waiting patiently my whole life to sit down with him and interview him. Truly, I thought of it often over a few decades, knowing it would take place eventually. When my brother announced a few years ago that he was slipping a bit, in 2021 at Thanksgiving, I sat down with him for the first of 3 sessions over next year, having no idea these would be all that I would share. I'd hoped for more and wanted to discuss fatherhood and so many other things. Like his own father, Shelby Scott, he was a mountain of life and learning but in ways, quietly and humbly so. Yet what we did capture was satisfying, and I'm grateful. Dad was reluctant, and yet he did it for me because he knew it was important to me, and I thank you, Daddy'O. I miss you so very much and live more abundantly in your shadow even now.
