If I could only keep one of my fountain pens, this would be it. Here's my review of the Kaweco AL Sport! This video includes a size comparison, plus I ink it up with Diamine Blue Velvet and do a journaling sample to show what that looks like as well.
In this video, I compare the Kaweco AL Sport in gold to the TWSBI Eco and the Pilot Metropolitan as well as a variety of different colors of the same pen in aluminum and plastic. I also demonstrate the Kaweco AL Sport vibrant violet with the J Herbin Poussiere De Lune ink.
Journal covers in this video: Chic Sparrow Austen Emma Heritage traveler's notebook in pocket size and Chic Sparrow Austen Darcy Folio in A6 size. You can check out their current offerings at chicsparrow.com/laurenfairwea... and use my code 'laurenfairweather' for 10% off (I earn a commission if you do, which funds future videos on this channel!)
If you have trouble finding any of the products I mentioned or used in this video, leave a comment and I'll do my best to help you find a link if it's still available somewhere!

I have owned a total of three fountain pens and started collecting them in 2019. I am not a huge spender so I always made sure to do my research and finally bit the bullet and bought a Kaweco Al sport in rose gold. It is my absolute favorite. It’s so convenient being a mini and the nib I got was not troublesome like others report. I’m in a bit of a pink era right now so the rose gold was absolutely perfect! If I could only keep one or if I could go back I would only keep and choose to purchase the rose gold. It is my dream pen!

Enjoy so much your videos. You are so informative and easy to listen to. Just finally ordered iridescent pearl Kaweco and will be my first Kaweco. See everyone has at least one in their pen collection. What I really want, as I mentioned was the vibrant violet AL, but such a big price jump. Just trying to find a reason to get it, along with TWISBI mini white rose gold.

Great video I've had the brass sport for around 4 years, purchased the 14k gold extra fine nib. Recently added the black clip which I think suits it's tarnished appearance with the patina. It's one of my all time favorite pens I own and is permanently inked! I've never had it hard start even if I haven't uncapped it in a few weeks.

I EDC the Brass Sport. Probably the most rough and tumble fountain pen out there, any nicks or dings just add more character and it only looks better with age.

I've been using fountain pens for years and years and years, but you inspired me to save up and get the Iguana Blue AL sport a few weeks ago. It's my ultimate favorite color of turquoise ever. The medium nib is absolutely perfect. And even though the pearl Sport looks like a tampon, 😄 it is still one of my faves in my collection as well. My other 2 fave Kawecos are the ART sports in pearl orange and metallic turquoise. With that, I think my collection of 4 sports is complete 🤗.

I love the Kaweco Sports! I have amassed quite a collection and love them all. I agree the nibs are not consistent and I go back and forth between medium and broad. I love the Iridescent Pearl - it’s so pretty. I have the brass one and while it does make my hands smell like pennies it feels so solid in my hand. It is also great for carrying around as it can take a hit easily. The one I have writes beautifully. I also have the AL in Rose gold and LOVE how smooth it feels. Just gorgeous. I don’t have any of the gold nibs - I am happy with the steel ones so I doubt I will ever upgrade. I keep telling myself that I won’t buy more sports but then I follow up to say that I’m just lying to myself when I say that. ;)

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on the AL Sport! I have three of the plastic Sports and recently purchased the Brass Sport. I love the feel of the brass, but it is way too heavy for me to write with for long sessions, and my Kaweco Classic Sport is the primary fountain pen that I use for journaling. I was hoping that the brass version would become my primary, but since it causes hand fatigue, I think I'll try the AL Sport. I'm hoping that it will be the Goldilocks pen, heavier than the plastic sport, which is a little too light, but way lighter than the brass. It sounds like you love the AL for the same reason.

Great video! My first ever fountain pen was a Lamy Safari, but the first SERIOUS one I got was the Kaweco Sport series. That was when I realized I really enjoyed the experience of writing with a fountain pen and wanted to level up a bit. I got both the AL Sport in the Limited Edition Aurora Green (which is drop dead gorgeous in person) and the Brass Sport. I love the weight and heft of the brass model, and I do indeed look forward to using it and watching it earn a patina over the years, but if I'm being honest I think I prefer the weight of the AL Sport more. For longer writing sessions, the brass does eventually tire me out a lot faster than the aluminum one, making the latter much more enjoyable to write with for long stretches. However, that very violet AL Sport is beautiful, and I may just have to pick another one up for myself! However, I got my nibs in both fine and extra fine as I tend to write cursive quite small, and medium nibs just weren't giving me enough room to write small enough. I think I've landed on the Fine nib for writing and the Extra Fine for sketching. :-)

@Krzysztof Woźny Thanks for your comment! Yes, I agree that the Sport isn't any more serious than the Lamy Safari - good thing I said I got an AL SPORT in the Limited Edition Aurora Green and then a Brass Sport. The metal sports, I would think, are probably a little more "serious" than the plastic sports.

I also love the Kaweco AL sports. I think my favorite is the Skylucent. It is an exclusive to a Japanese stationary store and has the same smooth texture as the gold but it’s a pretty Tiffany blue. I also love the gold. It was a birthday gift from my sister and has been consistently inked since January. It is true that the Brass Sport has a smell at first but becomes less noticeable as it patinas. It is my very favorite Kaweco! I also have the Steel Sport but there is just something about the way the brass patinas and the heft of the pen that makes me reach for it over all of the others. Diamine cartridges are awesome in Kawecos. My favorite of the Anniversary colors is the Safari Green.

A pen I loved as soon as I saw it and ended up getting was the Kaweco AL Sport Stonewashed Blue. I’m kind of new in the FP world so I don’t have many pens but I see myself buying another Kaweco soon, may be with a M nib instead of F that I don’t enjoy that much. A plastic Sport is a good idea exactly for the same reason you said, I will not mind carrying around a cheaper one. I’m still undecided among Cian, Frosted blueberry, Navy Blue, Ice Blue…even the Pearl I like…will see. That ink blue you tried reminded me a lot to the only blue ink I have, the Diamine Washable Blue, I like it a lot but you can get tired of it quickly I feel. Anyway nice video I enjoyed it a lot and btw my favorite color is blue 😂😂😂

Funny enough I started out with that green one you showed. I love the look of it but I also found it way too light and so jumped to the opposite end of the pool with the brass! I've only had that for two days, but have really been enjoying writing with it. instead of pressing down on the pen like with the plastic I feel like it just kind of glides as it goes; I recommend it! I have it in fine point as I like to conserve on the ink a little more... when I first got the medium on the plastic one I seemed to really be going through the ink quickly.

There is nothing wrong with steel nibs, especially Kaweco's, especially the . Personally I don't think gold nibs are worth it, even though that's al I buy anymore. Don't be a sucker like me! The one Kaweco I have that I still use is the Special . Excellent and comfy.

I feel EXACTLY the same way (about 6 minutes into the video, LOL). The only difference is that my favourite is the rose gold colour, in a M nib. The plastic sports are too light in hand and I don’t write well with them. The AL Sport is my Goldilocks “just write”. I have several TWSBI ECOs (regular and T), a Lamy Safari, and several Platinum Prefountes (which I quite like and are super inexpensive), as well ass a few other ALs in different colours & finished (vibrant violet, Iguana blue, Petrol) but if I had to live with only one FP the rest of my life it would be my rose gold AL Sport in M. The texturing on the other colours really changes the feel & movement in hand, and while I enjoy them, they just aren’t the same, so my favourite ink (Noodler’s Black Swan in Australian Roses) is always in my rose gold :)

For Kaweco nibs, try the Premium steel ones. Not much different, but they are built to higher quality control standards. For the slight increase in price, it's worth it. Moreover, they (are claimed to) have a larger, better iridium tip. The gold Kaweco nibs, I wouldn't expect much from them. The quality of Kaweco pens (of any pen indeed) is in their smooth writing. And smoothness oftentimes increases with rigidity, not the other way around, if combined with good build, grind and tuning.. Now, steel is stiffer than gold. For any degree of build quality, a steel nib should give you a smoother write. Gold nibs are softer, they flex more and can give more variation in the width, but not more smoothness. Their better writing results mostly from better build and quality controls. (Their high price 'justifiies' spending more time on them. The maker believes the customes will be willing to pay more. And he is usually correct). In summary, if what you want is smooth writing and don't care about caligraphy nor variation in thickness, get a steel nib built to the highest standards that you find and can afford. PS. For a proof of this, try some well-built steel nibs (which are rare!). Try for instance the nibs from Faber Castell or Otto Hutt. There's no gold nib that can beat them. People come utterly surprised at their smoothness, because they don't understand these arguments.. One last note: One would think that a good option would be a gold nib with more weight to give it more stiffness. But that's virtually impossible, if you recall that gold comes at aroung $60 per gram. No nib maker is interested in going that direction. Quite the opposite. Gold nibs are optimized for low weight and are thinner. That makes them even softer, but never smoother (other things being equal).

the range in looks/aesthetics of these pens is wild! so pretty and something for every mood. do you notice any kind of quality/writing difference between pens where you can change the nibs and pens where you can't? maybe it's the indecisiveness in me but i can't imagine committing to one nib size for a pen forever unless there was a huge difference in the experience.
@JournalSunshine
@JournalSunshine Жыл бұрын
You can change the nibs for all of these, the plastic ones just require a bit more work since they don’t screw on/off like the metal ones do (a rubber grip helps with the plastic ones). The quality difference in the nibs doesn’t seem to correlate with anything though, just kind of random - the medium nib in my stonewashed black AL sport is thin and kind of scratchy but the medium one in my gold AL sport is smooth and juicy. Maybe someday I’ll learn how to tune the ones I don’t love as much, or find someone local who can. I personally use medium nibs the most (if I want something very fine I tend to prefer gel pens), but I have multiple pens with a variety of nib sizes so I have options.
