I finally got a fountain pen! Actually, I got two! I'm loving the rose gold Kaweco Al Sport, but I think the Black Kaweco AL Sport is too broad. I might buy a new nib in extra fine. The main reason I love this pen has to do with the cartridge based ink. That was a major selling point for me. I also like the variety in ink colors.

Hi Sylvia. I hope you enjoying your AL sports. I am not a true fountain pen expert but I have using fountain pens for about 5 years now and have a few tips. Those cartridges that you bought are standard International cartridges and will fit most fountain pen brands but some companies have their own proprietary cartridges and converters that will not fit standard international cartridges. Pilot and Lamy are the two big companies and most new pen users come across. Sorry to say those Brown cartridges won't fit in your Pilot Kakuno. A the Kaweco aluminum box has an M on them. I have even purchase rollerball pens and pencils that come in that box. Kaweco is known for not always having the best QC. They use two manufacturers to mass-produce their nibs and have been known to over polish them. You can also get oil leftover in the feed of the pen from manufacturing so it is best practice to flush your pen with water before inking it for the first time (although in the excitement of getting a new pen I often forget too). A nasal aspirator can be really helpful in flushing out your pen. What ink you use can also have a lot to do with the line width of your pen. Some inks are "wet" and spread more on the page, and while others are dry.

Wow this is really helpful! I was going to ask if a short international converter will fit Kaweco. I detest cartridges.

I feel you on the bottled ink. What I do is I bought a syringe from Goulet and fill my cartridges from the bottle. The cartridges hold more ink than the converter.

Thanks for sharing! 😍 I have the rose gold one as well and love it! The black is also pretty but I‘d like to get the denim colored one. 🥰 Apart from Kaweco I’m totally into TWSBIs... they are such reliable workhorses and I prefer bottled ink over cartridges. My Kaweco box also has that M on the nib by the way, but since my pen also has an M nib that doesn‘t really help much in this case... 😂

Hi Sylvia really interesting post on the Kaweko sport fountain pen ordered mine yesterday got one in red from Amazon and a black, green from Cult pens here in the UK also got the converters and the tin together with a selection of Kaweko ink cartridges in various colours, so should get them sometime next week. Thank you for a very informative video and I see what happens with my nibs / ink in variations of line width and post a comment after I have used them for a week or two.

One of us! hehe. I have the "Petrol" Kaweco Al Sport that I bought when I was in Amsterdam because it was a region exclusive! There's a Japanese region exclusive Al Sport called "Sakuralucent", which is similar to the Rose Gold one, but more cutesy pink and I want it so bad! I also have one more Al Sport and 2 of the plastic ones. In my experience, Kaweco nibs are unfortunately pretty inconsistent in terms of like, 2 fine nibs writing the same. With that being said, they are great little pens and I'm so happy to see you using some :D (by the way, blotting paper will become your new best friend, I use some in my Hobonichi weeks daily).

I have been thinking about purchasing this Kaweco for sometime now, I have hesitated because of the small ink capacity. I think I will definitely add it to my next purchase. I am the opposite and refer the bottled ink. My favorite being Noodlers’ Lexington Gray, which is a wet ink that is fast drying and great on tomoe river paper. Although, I have seen several videos that refill the cartridges so that would be something for me to look into. Brian at Goulet Pens here on youtube has great information videos on fountain pens and ink if you ever do decide to try the bottled ink. Thank you for sharing your new fountain pens. I definitely love both colors but the black in definitely my favorite today.

Hi Sylvia! I also have a Kaweco Sport/Black. Mine has gold nib & trim (it's not real gold). It is many years old in an extra Fine nib. Please don't be upset with your nib sizes. Each ink can perform differently. If you put the black cartridge in & still there is an inconsistency in the line drawn, then you can contact Kaweco. You were smart to get the case. I treated mine as a knock around pen & the number of scratches shows how old it is! I had to get the extra fine in order to use it at work. I think you should invest in blotting paper. Hobonichi paper smears unless you give it time to dry & sometimes I just didn't have the time. Since I have been using the blotting paper, I have had zero smears!! Fountain pens write so smoothly and they are a joy.

Congrats on your new fountain pens! I have several Kaweco's. My first I bought a shop in Berlin, and it has a double broad BB nib. I also have the al sport rose gold too or maybe it is champaign in fine, also purchased from Amazon (that nib needed work to write well). Sometimes these pens need some fine tuning. I also have white, black and mint in medium nibs.

With the nibs being the same (Fine), there other things that affect the line width and smoothness. In your case, it’s the black ink, which is more saturated than the comparatively drier Midnight Blue. It affects the smoothness and line width. Congratulations on getting two solid pocket pens. Enjoy! :)

I didn’t know Kaweco’s were on Amazon. I’m going to have to keep my eye on them for good prices. If you decide to go the bottled ink route I highly recommend Pilot Iroshizuku inks. They’re very well behaved inks and generally have a fast drying time so they should work on Tomoe River paper. Diamine also has good inks and they come in standard cartridges, but the dry time on them varies.

Your first Kaweco ! Welcome to the dark side mate. I'd advise you to just have a look at some bottled ink cause that's half the fun of writing with fountain pens. So much choice and different properties like shading, sheening, or shimmers if you're feeling extra fancy. For this you only have to invest in an ink syringe and refill the kaweco cartridges you already own. They hold way more than any of their converters for the sports anyway. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do !

Lovely! I hope you enjoy them. The tins are all printed with the M on the nib, what matters is the size on the actual pen nib. I have one F and one M and they perform a bit alike. But, the ink really matters, so does the paper. Some inks flow better than others some are more dry. As you write and write these pens will more and more be your own, adapting on your hand and your writing style.

I have 10 Kawecos and love them all! The cartridge colors are nice but if you ever get into bottled ink you can syringe fill the cartridges with your favorite colors of ink;) I have the Lilac aluminum as well as the brass and rose gold one and the rest are Fox, brown, yellow, lime, blue, mango and the 70s Soul which is soooo much fun! These are great little pens and they come with lots of different nib sizes! I have fine, extra fine, medium, broad and double broad and each are great in their own way depending on what you are using them for and you made a great decision choosing fine for use in your Hobonichis! I do the same! The medium is too heavy and the extra fine I find to be too scratchy and the line is too pale in my opinion. I’m so glad you took the plunge with fountain pens! To answer your question, I have four of those tins and they all say medium on them so I think that’s just a design element;) have fun with your kawecos! They are fun little pens!

I love the Kaweco designs but the nibs aren’t always the same in my experience. I wish they had better QC. My mediums are both different, one is more like a Japanese fine nib and other like the Europe fine. So when I got a broad, it’s more like a medium but skips from time to time. My brass nib is my fav. But the Kaweco body design is so awesome and as my nibs aren’t scratchy, I don’t mind the differences. They are great pocket pen. I hope you are still enjoying your kawecos. If you are looking to add to your collection, I highly recommend Lamy AL star for aluminium body and once you try a Twsbi, I think you will love them as the ink capacity, nibs, cleaning everything is sooo wonderful. For first pens, I would definitely recommend either a Lamy or a Twsbi. Loved your video ❤️

Ciao maybe too late and u sort everything out. Anyway… kaweco boxes are not referring to the size of the nib. It’s a standard logo no matter which nib u choose u will find pen with m nib on the box. Except the premium in gold all the kaweco nib are made of steel, chrome or golden finishes depends on the model… eg skyline have chrome, classics have golden plated finishes. Same is for the al and or the collection serie. Ciaooooooo

Ink cartridges can be proprietary. Check if the Kaweco ones can be used on pilot pens. I don't believe so. Different inks also have different flow also. One ink may be more juicy than others, even within the same manufacturer. The tin is just a marketing photo. They all say M on them. Welcome to the wonderful expensive world of fountain pens. ✒️💚
