Mike, You are always a pleasure to listen to... studio or mountains, the information and wisdom you share is enjoyable and enlightening. On the 45-70, what a nice, classic round. On the light side, I have a Guide Gun that honestly kicks like a rented mule, and on the other end of the spectrum, an 1886 that can comfortably be shot all day. Those two and the ones in between are some of my favorites. So much history with that cartridge, and it seems to keep writing new pages in its book. In closing, I very much enjoyed watching Mrs. USOG throw a couple big bore rounds downrange with authority. No apparent reluctance with recoil. Makes a true 45-70 lover smile.

Thank you Marc. Your words are a great encouragement! For sure the 45-70 remains one of the best cartridges at realistic distances; little meat lost and most things fall down. My wife hits everything with that rifle. All the best to you for 2023!

I have the Handi in 45-70 and it is very accurate. Before the Covid business I found a gun store going out of business and bought the rifle for $200 US after tax and it came with a box of ammo. It has been an unbelievably good rifle for me and has dispatched several hogs. Enjoyed your video as always.

Now you are talking. My first shotgun was a Model 37 12g. too. I still have it 45 years later. Since then I have found one or two more. One is a "red letter" model. I have been looking for one in .410 but they are as scarce as rocking horse poo. a 28g. one would be nice to. I have some H&R singles which are just as good. I also dream about finding a model 21 sbs. Love the Win. Model 37. If they still made it, they would still be in business.

My first shotgun was an H&R .410, which long ago was traded off. Today, I have two N.E.F. 12 gauges, and an old Kasnar 12gauge, which only chambers 2 3/4 shells. This one was made in South Korea, probably in the 1960's, sometime. If you weren't aware, one can purchase shotgun inserts, which slide into the chamber, and are in pistol calibers of many calibers. I bought one in . 45 Colt and have used it. Bought it some years back from Short Lane, over in Montana. These break-open, single-shot, 12 gauges can fire black powder. Short Lane also sells an adapter for this purpose which uses a #209 primer, as a substitute for a percussion cap.I have fired one of the N.E.F. shotguns, loaded up as a muzzleloader, and it worked just fine. These designs are probably the most versatile firearms out there in the backwoods.

I don’t have any h&r rifles, but I have a 20 gauge h&r topper (1949) that I picked up years ago for $125. It is still my best handling shotgun that is the best in my incompetent hands at busting hand thrown clay birds. Someone, I think, glued the forearm on (probably because it kept falling off when fired, I know of one 12 gauge that does that) but it doesn’t really matter. I don’t think I really need to take it down. I love that shotgun. I should look for some h&r rifles, too. Great video, as always. Take care of yourself, we’re all looking forward to many more years of your great videos.

Brought my first Harrington and Richardson , H&R 40 years ago , Brought my second but they had changed to The New England Fire Arms company , they both looked identical but had different names , shot many deer and squirrel , Fed my family some of the best tasting meat ever , I still have both single shots , but I also upgraded to a rifled barrel Mossberg 12 GA pump shotgun and I very rarely take the single shot guns out , I just clean them and put them back , but they shoot straight and true

There were probably less than 1000 h&rs made in 7.62x39, mostly because they don’t function well with steel cased ammo and so we’re never that popular. Their chamber is slightly different dimensions than the eastern bloc rifles chambered in x39, but brass cased ammo shoots lights out. I have some factory lapua ammo that can shoot sub moa in one of my copies.

Hello Bigbore - You know what's what. I thought of the 45-90 as well - good on you for doing it! I have a hunch that there simply is no better single shot - and the 45-70 and 45-90 do everything....if you are a hunter. IMHO
@bigboreleveraction933
@bigboreleveraction933 Жыл бұрын
@@UnitedStatesOfGuns both cartridges will most certainly do pretty much anything you need them too with such a wide variety of loads for either. I had just thought it would be unique to have one chambered in 45-90 as even just the cartridge is somewhat uncommon these days. Aswell as it being one of my favourites. And the shikari (from my understanding) were the first rifles H&R built and they used the same receiver as their shotgun models which in turn are weaker then the more modern H&R rifles so pressures were limited to trapdoor loads and not much higher. So chambering mine in 45-90 would give me an extra 200fps with the same pressure as the 45-70 loads of the same powder type and bullet weight. I really like the simplicity of the H&R and the shikari models having the cleaning rod gives them a very unique and neat look. Also. I refinished the stock on 45-90 shikari and the wood grain hidden under the factory stain was beautiful. Like many factory rifles thier finishes and coatings lots of time hide an amazing piece of wood.
@bigboreleveraction933
@bigboreleveraction933 Жыл бұрын
Also when the cleaning rod is all the inserted try turning it a quarter turn. It should misalign the cleaning tip with the stock groove and lock it in place. This should stop it from popping out.

There are 2 different h&r muzzle loader systems based on the traditional single shot. The first is exactly like a shotgun, the receivers are actually interchangeable. I mostly shoot mine with a 357 maximum barrel. This is classified as a firearm since it can function with shotgun and low pressure rifle barrels. The second system utilized a slightly different lockup, and so only can use muzzle loader specific barrels for this variation.

Very few 28s were ever made, that’s possibly the hardest smooth barrel to find (except maybe the 32 gauge, which was primarily used for animal tranquilization). Is the barrel full length? The only 28g I’ve been able to pick up is a 27.5” with a fixed mod choke.

I bought a new one 40 years ago which the ejector wasn't made properly and carved a groove in the bolt face. The shop gave me a replacement rifle. It also had a super heavy trigger. Not great.

I swage rim fire bullets. I started out by reloading 22lr. Found that I had to swage the bullets to get precision. So I expanded to making other rim fire bullets.

My first gun was a H&R trapper jr. Didn't they have interchangeable barrels? That platform in .308 would be sweet. Post script: The 45-70 is a legendary cartridge. Thanks for the video. 👍

Yes , you could send your stock end into the factory and they would match up a new barrel of your choice . There were many calibers available .

The one caveat with high pressure rounds is that not all receivers can handle the pressure. You have to pull the stock and exam the rear area to tell if it is safe.

@USOG don't we all, sometimes overlook the obvious? I know I do! Thanks for your videos. Very enlightening, and your demeanor is fantastically humble, for a fellow who has such an extensive collection. I have a buffalo classic in 45/70, and have found a few for friends, cheap, from owners who missed the obvious.... they didn't understand a transfer bar safety..... they momentarily hit the trigger, not holding it down. The transfer bar falling back down before the hammer completes falling on the bar and giving light strikes.... they thought the rifle was defective instead of their actions being defective...... those friends ended up getting their rifles for 75% of what I paid new. But when I buy new I always ask to see all, in that model, so I can get the one with the best fit and finish, and the nicest wood to be had at that particular dealer. May want to enlightening the folks about that.

The Shikari was made in 44 Mag and 45-70. It had the cleaning rod under the barrel, which makes it look like a muzzle loader. A Shikari was a hunting trip in India, the equivalent of a Safari in Africa. This was an attempt to capitalize on the allure of hunting in foreign lands by a lower level firearm maker.

I remember seeing that H & R rifle in the catalog as a kid and really wanting it even though I had no earthly need for it. To keep the cleaning rod from moving maybe put a patch on The front where it goes into the stock and it will make it more snug…not sure I really like your videos, maybe not the slickest and sometimes You jump around the topic but I like that!

do you suppose i might get away with fitting a 45-70 barrel to my topper 88 12 ga? ive seen barrels on ebay in many calibers but i think the 45-70 is one of the best lower pressure option. i might even be able to get away with a 357mag barrel but that's wear i start getting to the limit i think?
@UnitedStatesOfGuns

Hi there, The actions and locking seem to be all about the same. The barrels are chambered so the barrels will be okay. I'd see what a qualified gunsmith says to make a decision though. Sorry I don't know more details.

45-70 trapdoor pressure is no problem in the shotgun receivers. Lever action loads would be pushing things. Watch for set back on the bolts, and frame stretch as the shotgun receivers were made of a softer iron than receivers intended for high pressure rounds.
