Yeah, I'm not getting it. Of course, I never had a "dream" wedding plan, but I've heard there are a lot of women who start "dreaming of the day" when they are little girls. Again, I just don't get it. How about a small wedding and a reception meal with close family and friends, then saving up throughout the year and having a big one year anniversary bash? Or just push the day back a year and save like crazy for the dream wedding? Why is that a problem? They are both young so an extra year shouldn't such a big deal to get the dream wedding.

I'm 2 years after this post and I hope like heck that you haven't married that bonehead. She is clearly a controlling creature who will play the victim and shame you to get what she wants for herself only. That shows a lack of empathy. Never let emotional blackmailers control you, ever. As for Ramsay's suggestion that you go and see a Christian counsellor, absolutely do not go and see one of those religious nutters. They will lead you down a road of destruction. Get all of that religious crap out of your head.

My late husband and I decided that we wanted to start out together without debt. We paid cash for our furniture and my car. He had a company car. We also wanted to have a few dollars in our pocket. I got married in a $40 dress that I made myself and I got my shoes for only $4 because the store wanted to get rid of the size 4 shoes that didn’t fit anybody but me. We stayed married for 40 years until he died 2 years ago. He left me with multiple paid off houses and cars and an income for the rest of my life. When he died, we didn’t owe a penny to anybody, and I am still debt free. He was a good man that treated me very well and handled money responsibly. I really miss him.

As a wedding photographer, this is a massive red flag. I've photographed almost 100 weddings and less than 30 of the couples are still together after two years. I've learned to see a lot of the red flags before the wedding even happens. The fact that she's prioritizing the price of the wedding over actual happiness says a lot about her. We had 20 guests who then all went to a restaurant for a 3 course meal costing £800 in total. We only invited those who meant a lot to us. We both make good money and are debt-free but I respect the hard work my husband puts into earning it, so I wouldn’t squander it. We are happy and blessed. I was a military cop for 6 years (19 - 24yrs old) and saw lots of military buddies marry and divorce within a year or two. I saw what people did while their spouses were away on TDY (temporary duty assignments away) and responded to my fair share of domestic disturbances at base housing. It was an eye opening experience that kept me from marrying at a very young age. I did end up getting married in my late 30's long after my separation from the military.

When she accuses him of being greedy, that is known as projection. Dave is correct. She is entitled and childish. She should be reminded that weddings are traditionally funded solely by the bride's family. Where are they? And I know enough about military culture to know that with her attitude, her probability of fidelity on a military base is just about zero. Cut her loose to marry and divorce someone else.

While it wasn't a wedding I remembered dating this girl about 15 years ago. We both lived in separate cities. She was living with her family, while I just started living on my own. We spoke about living together before getting marry. She was not getting along with her sibling and she wanted to move on her own. She asked me for 10k to find a place and move on her own. While I had the money I told her I was saving so we could buy our own place. Well she wasn't happy and told me that either I help her get her own place or she was leaving and I will never hear from her ever again. Right there I knew she was not the one and I didn't want to live with someone who at any time she hit a wall or going through hard time was going to threaten to leave me. So I told her that she could do whatever she wanted and I left her. My advice to him is to continue with your life and let her be, there are many other women out there.

So, we ended up buying a suit for him, a dress for me, and invited only my parents( his were outside the country) and a good photographer. AND it’s half of his income! Which makes 16k a lot more than it would be for the average wedding

Yeah, that's about what we spent but almost all of it was paid for by my debt free dad who set the budget and could afford it and then we planned based off of that. If the budget had been less, we would have done less. No way should you go in debt for it.

16k wedding is not expensive? he only makes 30k a year, some goes down for taxes, etc. it takes easily 1,5 year of disposable income from him, thats too much for 1day ceremony.

It’s not about the money, the debt, or anything else. If you can’t work this out TOGETHER, you have no business getting married! As a married couple, that’s what it’s all about...working as a team to figure things out. BOTH need to compromise!

@nate_9092 He needs to leave if he has a conversation with her and they can't figure out a way to really hear what each other is saying and really wanting. Just like Dave said or maybe just implied, the money may not actually be the root issue for her. Throwing a whole relationship away without at least TRYING to work it out is a crying shame for both people involved. They've clearly built a foundation, and there is some level of affection there: why throw that away at the first major hurdle? What if they talk and the conversation goes really well and the relationship is not only saved, but is stronger for their efforts? And if the conversation goes poorly, well, then they need to ask themselves if it IS time to leave.

I'm struck by Dave's advice to him to find a chaplain or a pastor. It's a very mature approach, since we're only getting his side of the story which may or may not be the reality. Sure, the audacity of her stance is entertaining but there are two people that are on the verge of ruining their youthful years if they don't at least TRY work it out together.
