Here's a thought on the "safety" of older cars vs. newer cars: I owned a 90 Honda Accord. In 2015 (25-year old car, no air bags), I was literally knocked off a 65-mph highway and halfway across the median by an idiot in a pickup truck. When everything stopped, I simply unbuckled, opened the door, got out, and walked away without a bruise or scratch. I drive an 18-wheeler cross-country (Million Mile Safe Driver), and I see a lot of car crashes, both during and after. I've seen brand-new vehicles get turned into pieces so small you could pick up everything but the engine and transmission by hand and put it into a dumpster. The "latest" is not necessarily the "greatest". And all those computerized safety bells and whistles aren't going to save you, no matter what the salesman said.

I'd have to disagree on Dave's safety assessment. The issue isn't that that 90s car is unsafe, it's that it's going up against modern cars that are huge and rely heavily on crumple zones. Watch some crash tests between a 90s car and a modern car and you'll see, the 90s car just gets obliterated. It's an unfair match and the 90s car will lose every time.

I do hate the safety argument. If you want your kids to be super safe in a car, buy a great car seat. Have a mechanic do a once over the anchor points and seat belt mechanisms. Get them serviced or fixed if they need it. There's your safety right there. A properly installed car seat does not rely on the car's safety features beyond anchor points and seat belts. If you're worried about whether you've installed the seat right, I believe some fire departments can inspect those? Not 100% sure, but I know many communities have a specialist floating around somewhere.

She did not say brand new. She did not say she wanted to get rid of her 2008 Toyota RAV. She said she is not comfortable with her husband keeping his 1998 Honda Accord. She planned to keep her Toyota (at least until Dave suggested upgrading both cars). As Dave said, if you don't have any debt, make $180k/year and have $40k in savings, you can afford to upgrade a car that is almost 25 years old. Give the woman a break.

Its also not fair to him if he likes his old car, especially since she is trying to guilt trip him over "safety" concerns. Even back in the "unsafe" days when car deaths were almost guaranteed in a bad crash, the baby in the back seat had a great chance of survival. The parents up front are the ones at risk in an older car, the baby is basically just as safe. Now, if he complained about his car constantly, and she is sick of hearing it, then yes, he should upgrade. But this rant sounds like she just doesn't like HIS car and is trying to validate her opinion to her husband by asking Dave Ramsey to agree to it (which im sure she knew he would...even if it were for different reasons).

Dave is so wrong here. a 1998 Accord was designed in the earliy 90s, probably based on a platform from the 80s. so a new car could be almost 40 years more adcanced in safety features. From chassis contruction, to air-bag tech, crash avoidance tech. Its night and day. An accident that you could walk away from in a new car might very well kill you in a car from the 90s, thats the truth

I drive a 2002 Buick Lesabre and its a good car. No reason to sell it. The fuel mileage is respectable for a 20 year old car and its still fairly dependable. Its a really nice example, good paint, decent interior, not beat up, no rust, so i see no reason to sell it as long as it stays comfortable and useful. Its safe, comfortable, economical, and it was cheap. I can do all the maintenance myself, and most of the repairs when needed. I have a spare truck that i can drive if and when the Buick needs repaired, so im keeping it until it becomes more expensive to fix than to buy another $1800 car. I like my truck, but its a toy. Its there when I need it but I dont depend on it and its not very much of an expense. My friends and family want me to buy a new car so I can save on gas. The Buick gets 27-29 mpg on the highway. A new Corolla would definitely be much better than that but not enough to justify spending $28k! Besides, theres something about driving on air shocks while listening to rock and roll cassettes with the seat leaned back that you cant get with a new Toyota lol.

No offense intended, I really do like buicks their a great value and 3800 v6 is dead reliable.

@@Ka_Gg I mean that's literally what the conversation is about. Why else would someone want to or not want to stick with a 1998 car? The question is do we upgrade and spend money upgrading, or continue to use what we have. Obviously the woman's motivation for upgrading is to have something newer and more safe for the baby. If they had a million dollars in the bank I'm sure it wouldn't be q conversation. I personally think if she wants to greatly impact the life of her child, put 30k you would spend on a new car into a college fund for 18 years and that kid will be able to go to Harvard if they want to. Getting into a car accident, in any vehicle is going to be very bad for a small child. Airbags don't help them because they're too small.

As a licensed mechanic i just have to say. "New cars are made to break down quickly" Anything past 2009 is getting into a engineered to fail territory. Manufacturers make money from parts and service. Very little profit comes from the car itself. Hence they are incentiviezed to make newer cars last barely past the warranty period before major issues occur.
