Born to die is sooo relatable bc its all ab escapism and using "keep making me laugh lets go get high" is basically escaping the toxicity of the relationship. she keeps that theme throughout a lot of her music and it resonates w so many ppl.

I’m so excited to go on this Lana journey with you. A reactor that gets into analysis of the not just the lyrics, but the themes and production choices…very rare. And you are 100% correct about a lot of Lana’s songs covertly alluding to her relationship to fame. Even Video Games, which sounds like a straightforward love song, is about a relationship that Lana was in where she had given up on trying to break into the music business. She had temporarily given up on trying to achieve success, and gave herself over to the comfort of a mediocre relationship. Paradise EP is even more so dealing with fame. Except it’s more about what fame feels like once you have it. Great video. Thank you for all your efforts. You’re so entertaining and analytical💕

42:20 I'm pretty sure that the theory about Summertime Sadness being about her dead friend is just a widespread fan theory. At least I have never seen Lana or anyone confirming it. This is what Lana said about the song Summertime Sadness: "I love it because I didn't compromise when I wrote it at all - I wrote exactly what I felt, and put a melody to it that was perfect for the words. I was staying in Santa Monica, California with my composer and best friend, Dan Heath. I would sit under the telephone wires and listen to them sizzle in the warm air while he went to work. I wanted to take the electricity and absorb it so it would make me feel alive and electric again. I felt happy in the warm weather and started writing about how sad and gorgeous the summertime felt to me." She doesn't mention any dead friend as inspiration and in one of her future songs she confirms that summertime is a gorgeous and sad time for her: "summer's meant for loving and leaving", so that might be all that is to it, just a melancholy from summer break-ups. And this is what Jaime King, the girl in the music video and Lana's real-life friend, said about the music video: "It's about not being able to live without the one you love, friend or lover it doesn't matter, that's whatever you want it to be." I'm enjoying your Lana reactions, can't wait for the next album!

I think it's just about how she's feeling after losing her boyfriend who od'ed .. or a combination of that loss as well as the loss of her other broken relationships thereafter .. which is why she's always been singing about that kind of lost love. Dark Paradise, the Blackest Day, and Shades of Cool being about her ex who was extremely depressed and so on ..

You gotta do paradise next. It has a short film that incorporates 3 songs from the album/ep. Also "young and beautiful" isnt part of the album but it was one of lanas biggest songs and released around the same time. Also "burning desire" was another song that was released around the same time but isnt on the album. I think they're pretty important songs that a lot of people skip sadly

You are amazing to pick up Lana's backstory, without knowing the context . . . Lana spoke about an affair with a married man, a producer, she thought he would leave his wife and she would marry and have children. But it didn't happen. You said, "side chick," and that refers to a different romantic interest in that song. Same principle. The married man shows up on Ultraviolence. The video Carmen Lana made herself, like Video Games. One of the characters who makes an appearance is the subject for the Video Games - Blue Jeans - Born to Die trilogy. Lana said those are a trilogy in interviews, about the same relationship. I connected it to the character in the Carmen video. We respect Lana as an artist and do not want to violate her privacy! Because Lana gives as an artist . . . Maybe a little TOO much. I enjoy you identify samples! And realized first album listen how influential Lana is. Lana is receiving her flowers now, but the press blew her off for years! So disrespectful! SchoolboyQ Chiefkeef. I jotted those down. I do not listen to "rap" but I might listen here and there if I had a roadmap, because I guard my ears! Even a lot of Lana I do not listen to . . . Prescription quantity is medicinal, but too much is toxic! *subscribed*
@LouMurk

I feel the exact same way but for pop, so diving into it with Lana seems super fitting. Its like the best of both worlds with pop music with heavy rap influence. If you ever need a road map into rap I can definitely do that in the future, but its like a simple walk into a park that then spirals into a maze of a lot of experimenting, its fun once the pieces fit though.
