The song anesthesia pulling teeth is actually a bass solo! The late bassist Cliff burton used a "fuzz" wah pedal which is what gets those crazy broken up fuzzy scream sounds.

They're really good, but let's not get carried away, lots of bands do that, it's a common technique in songwriting, and many make too much out of it like it's something unique a band is doing. Even th emost basic songs pretty much tansition from the verse to the chorus, to the bridge section, etc. The same groove or beat from start to finish would be pretty lame, though it can be done effectively.

The Four Horsemen was originaly called Mechanix and was written by Dave Mustaine from Megadeth before he was kicked out of Metallica. He then recorded the original version of the song under the name Mechanix for the first Megadeth album "Killing is my Business... and Business is Good!". So if you ever decide to listen to that album and you start wondering "Hey, that sounds very familiar. It reminds me of The Four Horsemen." then here's why.

3:50 fun trivia - that guitar part that comes in during the bridge to The Four Horsemen before the solo starts is literally the opening riff to Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd, just with the southern twanginess taken out. There’s an interview where Dave Mustaine talks about how he played it as a joke when they were writing that section and Lars loved it, not realizing that he was playing a song by another band. So they tweaked it just a little bit and it went into the song.

Thrash and speed metal is a big part of what got me into metal music in the first place. Also a sidenote, I appreciate that if you're not really vibing with a certain aspect of a song, you don't try to make yourself like it for the audience, you actually express that it wasn't your thing or you didn't love it. When this album came out I was a senior in high school in Seattle WA. My school district had a radio program and part of it was an after school radio show for everybody. We played "district approved" music and read news and all that student DJ stuff. I signed up for the last shift on Friday because it came with a KEY TO THE STATION and we had to lock up at 8pm.....as you might imagine, my 17-yr-old brain immediately figured out that I could smoke pot for two hours in the parking lot and then fire the station back up. We could be heard all over Seattle so I'd spin from about 10pm to 2 or 3 in the morning. Black Flag, local bands, THIS, and then weird synth-pop and just whatever we couldn't play during the day. This remains my favorite Metallica album, though. Nobody ever seemed to catch on and I have some fond memories of being the only interesting thing on the Seattle airwaves that year. I dig these reaction videos if only because after 40 years of being around music I still get excited to hear new stuff. It's fun to watch other people get excited, too. '- )

Glad you're enjoying the bass, savour it - Metallica have a storied history with bass (and lack thereof) which you'll see as we progress lol. I came to this album late, kinda bounced off it initially as I was used to the justice / puppets sound they had a few albums down the line. James' vocals are definitely unique on this, he was really very young tbh - still has a lot of that abrasive grit to his screams which can be jarring now and then. Thankfully I kept returning to it and love kill em all now, the instruments alone are enough for a repeat listen lol. Looking forward to seeing you check out the next few albums - some absolute gold there. Ps - see em live if you ever get the chance, they put on fantastic gigs.

James' vocals improves through each album. The third album (MoP and my fav) sees a smoother growl quality and he still had had no formal vocal training. Wasn't too long before he blew out his voice on tour by singing and screaming every night without warming up and he thought he had ruined it forever. When he recovered, he started training it properly with a coach. Now, though he doesn't has incredible range, he is known for his distinct vocal style. Enjoy your journey!

The track "(Anesthesia) --- Pulling Teeth" at 8:40 is actually a _bass_ solo. Cliff Burton often did things like that - he would essentially play guitar solos on bass, and really make it sound like that. You can get a sound very much like that if you use distortion sounds and play high notes and bend the strings a lot etc.

Lucky girl! We all get one shot at hearing Kill 'em All for the first time. Here's my story. Summer of 1997. I''m living with my grandparents. I'm 14 and I get my first job working for a farmer who was also I family friend. My first paycheck I earned was about $500. So my granparents and I one Sunday drive 50 miles into the big city of Enid, Oklahoma. I wanted to get a couple of new cassettes because my Walk-Man was WEARING OUT the 4 tapes I DID own, Flesh and Blood by Poison Kiss Alive 3 Ted Nugent Double Live Gonzo And Load by Metallica I settled on The Black album and Kill 'em All after spending about an hour in Sam Goody. After we had supper and drove home, I was sitting in the backseat of my Grandparents' '96 Town Car. I popped Kill em All into my Walk-Man and proceeded to melt my brain with awesome. I wanted to thrash so badly but my grandparents would have taken my Walk-Man away from me so I had to sit still like I was listening to Roosevelt's Pearl Harbor address. When I got home and took my shower that night, I noticed something new; I had hair on my balls.

This was 10th-11th grade for this kid!🤘 A respectful FYI, Anastesia (Pulling Teeth)’s only ‘lyrics’ are : “Bass solo, take one…” That’s Sir Clifford Lee Burton, playing a distorted 4-string, with a “Wah” pedal!🔥👍 James Hetfield had no intention of being Metallica’s lead singer…it just fell to him. Kudos to Kirk Hammett, his solos are practically an audition… he replaced the departing Dave Mustaine right before this album’s recording!😎

i dont know when it happened, but blitzkrieg & am I Evil disappeared from this album. I know they were cover tracks. But they were on all the electra releases of kill em all from 1986 through the 90s. Until the internet came along i never knew this album to be without those tracks. In particular because Am I Evil was played at every show in the 80s.

Coincidence, I've been listening to this album and adding several tracks to my after hours work playlists for the last week. Been feeling old school thrash!

I only saw one person mention, but this is a re-release of the album that cut two cover tracks they did. Blitzkrieg and Am I Evil covers are absolutely mindblowingly good. You should check them out and do an addendum.

My English ain't the most accurate, but still: Track number 5 is Anesthesia-Pulling Teeth'. It's an electric bass guitar taken to its absolute limits by the late virtuoso Metallica bassist Cliff Burton. It's what you call 'Distorted high register leading bass'. That's why it sounds like a guitar, since its mostly played on the highest register of the bass. That's the reason why it sounds way more massive and expansive than a guitar. Those screaming sounds and fuzzy tone were due to the Rickenbacker 4001 electric bass guitar being wired through a series of effect pedals, sustain/delay pedal, wah pedal, etc. There is also a hidden guitar pickup fixed into the bass just near the bass pickups. It was Cliff's secret weapon and could be turned on or off as he wished, also contributing into the 'lead bass tone'. Speaking about the actual composition, it's mostly classically influenced mainly from those Bach- Baroque period. Cliff used inspirations from those that sounds like a melodic sense and ornamentation (wiggling around with notes) in the leading bass solo. Starting with alternating D minor and C major arpeggios, it then sets off into E minor, then F major and goes on into a development which is also composed of many melodic arpeggio progressions. It then bursts of into a high note, then comes the percussion part, which is just pure metal madness and thrash. Percussion part ending is signalled by a tapped bass harmonics outro. Then there is a 'coda', which is just brutality on bass. All kinds of string pulling, scratching, take place. This composition is considered to be one of the absolute greatest bass solos of all time. Nobody, especially in the 80s, figured out how to get such a Loud, brutal, midrangey sound out of a bass, therefore completely changing the way people think about the electric bass guitar. It became more of a 'lead' instrument, along with being a main rhythm instrument. It is the summation of what Cliff had studied upto that point, his musical experience, his classical music theory knowledge, etc. It also proved to the world that Cliff Burton is a loud, classically trained virtuoso and could take his instrument into limits and even break those limits. Anyways congratulations on listening to a completely new sound, you are going to hear it's advanced stuff in the next 2 albums....
