From what I've heard I believe it comes from Yakuza 3 where Kiryu comments he's never killed anyone before, but that it was a mistranslation and it'd more accurately be "I've never murdered anyone before"

Nishiki literally tackles kiryu to prevent him from killing the final boss and has a ramble about how taking a life for the first time is something he cant walk back from, its such a big point in yakuza 0, and is followed up in kiwami with nishiki and the effects of him taking a life and descending mentally, so yes so far kiryu has killed nobody confirmed ^w^

There is a metric ton of unvoiced dialogue in Yakuza, so the etiquette is usually to let the VAs do their thing when it's time and then just apply your own voice for the copious amounts of unvoiced dialogue.

You can try Judgment and its sequel, Lost Judgment! They're spin-offs set in the same world that tell a different, unrelated storyline, they're more detective-themed than the main series. They have really good English dubs, some of the best stories in the franchise, possibly the best combat in the franchise too, and since they're unrelated to the main series, you can check them out even if you know nothing about the mainline games!
