My foolish heart by Kurt Elling at the Montreal Jazz Festival, Montreal, Canada, July 4, 2007. (video 1)
The poem interspersed in this song is glorious, anyone whose not seen/heard this rendition needs to do so in a hurry

This is my fav. Kurt Elling video to show when introducing people to him who have never heard him before. I also am a youth worker and I work with teens. I show them how he sings and they actually dig it. Planting the seeds in the minds of the youth...it's a good thing!

It's one of the most remarkable, beautiful, rhapsodic, cultured, artistically superior performances of creative music I've heard in a long life of musical love, in reverence, keen learning, some devotion and submission. Bravo to all but especially to the bravura, distinguished singer, and pianist, Kurt and Laurence, plus the tasteful reserved accompaniment. Victor Young's beautiful song never fails to offer, to challenge, to please...

I saw this live once. This exact song and arrangement during the time he promoted his "night moves" album at singapore's esplanade theatre that built for classical acoustic sound. I didn't know this arrangement existed. He opened the concert with this song and the long note moved me to tears and the guy next to me wept too, I had to close my eyes to saveur the sound.

I wish jazz audiences didn't need to applaud after every solo for this reason. There is an amazing moment in MFH as they transition from the poem back into the tune (approx 7:30-8:30). Kurt ends his high note and they return to the tune, but still in the style and mood of the middle section! Then they expand so joyously back to the opening style. The applause only sectionalizes the tune even as they are weaving it so beautifully into one. Trivializes it. Let them finish, then show your approval.

First, facial expression directly affects the tone of the voice - vowel color. Second, facial expression is a means of communication, voluntarily and involuntarily. Also, being in the moment means that you don't know what you or your fellow performers will do next, so you react. All this is in play in this performance - this is what I see in him. Critcizing his expression shows that your head/heart isn't in the right place. Never crossed my mind. Beautiful - romantic - uplifting performance.

It's like he's so good, I find myself trying to find something I can criticize. It's not easy. On many songs I could say I don't think he has the most beautiful voice; in fact, he hits many notes I don't find particularly mellifluous, and he's hard to watch sometimes, but damn, he's just the best male jazz singer I've heard. Granted that puts him in a tiny category but he sure is at the top of the class. His collaboration with Hobgood is serious stuff

Nat cole and Frank Sinatra would be very surprised to hear that they were "jazz singers" - they were popular singers who sang the pop music of their times. Kurt has grown up musically within a rarified, specialized milieu where to be a jazz singer is to play with , improvise with and put one's own stamp an old song with a personalized and inherently different "feel" than the listener has heard before. It's almost like part of the job of the modern "jazz singer" is to surprise the audience. I mean, personally, going head to head, singing a, let's ay, Gershwin song Kurt Elling would be blown off the stage, Frank's tone and his basic instrument was glorious, Kurt's a whole different bag.

Peter Putnam Frank had an incredible instrument, but Elling can do so much more with his, and does. His range, his unbelievable breath control, his improvisational skill, and when he chooses to scat? Sorry, dooby dooby doo simply dooby dooby doesn't. Of course, we all have things we prefer, and who's to say there's any right or wrong, better or lesser. *shrug* I love them both, but Kurt offers a broader more inventive feast. In my opinion, of course. lol
@beeshor1

Peter, I had to disagree with your comment. No one loves Sinatra and Cole more than I do but I have heard Elling sing a standard without all of the, let's say "pyrotechnics", that I think you're referring to in his case. Elling can flat-foot sing with the best of them. He has a glorious voice and an impressive range. He also is a master at the legato phrasing that Sinatra made so integral to his own arsenal. The difference is that I believe that Elling can hold a note even LONGER than Frank could! He certainly has listened to his share of Sinatra as evidenced by many of his choices when it comes to material. I believe that Frank Sinatra was probably the greatest singer of his era. During his youth no other singer even came near his ability to phrase and his beautiful tone. As much as I love Tony Bennett, his tone isn't quite as pretty {yet still masculine} as Sinatra's. Yet he compares nicely to Sinatra. That said, there are singers like Elling who compare nicely to Sinatra in my humble opinion.
@pputnam100
@pputnam100 9 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, Elling's amazing, he kills me. I was maybe 8 feet from him a while ago and he did Foolish Heart, slayed . me, I was stunned, and he did House is Not a home by Bacharach and that too was wonderful, but he doesn't have the voice of a Vandross, nor the soul, who in my opinion owns that song. I thinkt it's important to remember the historic context in which a person first hears something. See, you've already heard Frank's thing, but you're young and your sensibilities are modern I suspect. I think people feel differently about Sinatra when they heard him long ago, especially in light of that musical context. Young cats who think Stevie Ray is everything, don't realize into what context Hendrix appeared; it was like he fell off of a star into our world. I'm having trouble making my point (if I even have one..), but it just hit me, I really just think Frank's tone is quite more resonant and beautiful; personally, I agree that Elling is a wunderkind in terms of technique, phrasing, control, obviously, but BUT, his tone, his voice can be an acquired taste, the tone of it. It can be a bit nasally and odd at times; that said I think he's easily the best jazz singer; well men, that is. Dianne Reeves is incomparable, the closest living thing to Ella. I opened for her twice in recent years and standing at the side stage my jaw dropped and stayed there...!!!

happy birthday Kurt! Kurt Elling (born November 2, 1967) is an American jazz vocalist, composer, lyricist and vocalese performer. Born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Rockford, Elling first became interested in music through his father, who was Kapellmeister at a Lutheran church. Growing up, Elling sang in choirs and played various musical instruments, but wasn't exposed to jazz until he attended Gustavus Adolphus College.

I saw him live here in Manila last year, but I've been a huge fan since 6 or 7 years ago. This song makes me swoon each time. KURT ELLING IS THE BEST!

I am a vocal-jazz listener, I sing and love hearing people singinging... But the love i feel for Kurt's art of vocal is endless... He's definitely not a simple singer, but a complete artist...
