Lordy, lord, lord, my dog hates being outside. I've been worried, but now I'm starting to think, maybe he's just like me, and just wants to chill at home, sleep, and take it easy. I also started keeping the door open so he can come into the apartment if he wants, but he actually prefers his space on the balcony.

Johnny, it's great that your audience so supportive and giving advice on your beautiful dog. I hope you might consider letting him be with you inside your place. It will help with his anxiety and calming down/feeling safe. And it will even contribute to your mental health. It's proven that pets do that with their love for their owners. Just my 2 cents, thanks for being such a kind human being.

Yes I agree the balcony is essentially like a cage for the dog. He deserves to be free in your entire apt which itself for a dog of his size is already considered small. The balcony is just way way too small even for a tiny tiny dog let alone this huge dog

@@user-pc2jp2yr3c I bought my chihuahua a dog bed to put on top of my bed. I don’t want to squash her during the night, but yes we do sleep with her. Just Keep your dog cleaned and everything will be fine. After walks, I wiped her paws, face and okole. Her mouth gets a teeth cleaning gel every day. She gets her ear cleaned, nailed trimmed, and teeth cleaned every two weeks. She has a bath every 10-14 days. Her fur gets brushed every day. I feed her fresh foods. She has a stroller for rainy or extremely hot days. Walk her three times a day for 45 minutes each. We run fast for 3 minutes. We do tricks to pass the time. She gets to go to the beach twice a week. She loves a car ride. Johnny doesn’t have to do all of these things, but the dog needs stimulation and loves.

You have more in common with the dog than you realize. You, with your commitment issues and him with his anxiety issues, can help each other. Instead of complaining that he's pulling you, try to look at it that he's teaching you patience. Instead of constantly saying he's temporary, try to envision him as a permanent addition to your home. 🙏.

Johnny, I saw a few things here that might help you out. At the end of the video, sitting in his spot, the dug is panting to cool off, but his ears are back more than they were before, and his body language looking up and around at the sounds and echoes all show major anxiety. One thing the doggo needs from you is calm leadership. Right now you're full of uncertainty and not feeling comfortable and seem unsure. The dog senses that. My dogs always inform me of my mood when I stop to notice, and having learned to read their body language I become aware quickly. Some tips. First, you must always go through doors and up and down stairs first. Right now the dog feels like he has to be in charge and can never relax. Part of the struggle to relax is also in his brain, and it's understandable due to his experiences, but it's normal for dogs to want to go back to being more calm. You go first through doors and up and down stairs. If he starts to cut in front, don't allow it. I think the dog feels uncertain, feels that you feel uncertain, and going for walks is just more work for him, but I don't think he's completely happy relegated to the balcony 100% of the time. Consider introducing a little time indoors. As for a choke collar, I wouldn't do it. Your dog's problem is anxiety. The only thing that can help pulling like that is a head harness. As for the poop and difficulty eating even before that, your dog is probably experiencing a gut issue. Normally if a dog's food is switched, it's transitioned over the course of a few meals where the new food is mixed in to show the dog's stomach to adjust. This dog changed cold turkey, along with a big routine change. You should not be harming yourself to help the dog, and I dealt with a puller once so I feel your pain. Again, make sure you go through doors and up or down stairs first. This means the dog doesn't have to be in charge. You can feel more calm being in charge. Play with the dog with the toys sometimes which shows the dog affection. Get a head harness. It will teach the dog to not pull, and the dog may hate it, but it's pulling is both a communication of its anxiety and communication of excitement. Please strongly consider supporting the dog's gut health. If you feed it commercial dry kibble, please give it one Tablespoon of kefir (plain, no sugar) daily. Don't give too much or out dehydrates the dog. I can't tell you how helpful this is. Your dog is not happy, but you are not being a bad owner. You clearly care, but are getting increasingly anxious and the dog knows this. Try out the tips I've given you as some baby steps towards helping the situation. I've only seen limited windows into the situation they've your videos, but going on those, what the dog is indicating is clear. Having a dog in a normal state from the time it's a puppy is a big responsibility and change. Taking on a dog with psychological trauma and no experience is very courageous and also a big challenge. You have had him for only one week and obviously are doing the best you know how to, and you're getting frustrated. Please read back through for the tips I gave. They're consistently helpful across all dogs. Owning a dog will change you as you learn to understand the dog and act as a leader. I know if you can handle an entire room of people with confidence when you speak, you can bring that same calm confidence to caring for a dog. It comes from the same center place.

Dog has anxiety, it’s obvious. Rule number one on dog training-don’t get mad when they make a mistake and toilet inside. They are only doing what is natural. It’s up to you to be ready when he needs to go outside to toilet. Just clean it up and be prepared to take him out when he needs to go.

He doesn't look happy to me either, but he hasn't been since he lost his home and his people. I do not believe that dogs ever forget those who first loved them or stop wondering where they went, after a death or abandonment. I am sure he is better with Johnny than in the shelter but this is not his permanent home. I am afraid that he may never actually get adopted into a home again. What would be ideal is if someone who really wanted him came forward to take him on immediately after Johnny. Going back to the shelter will be very bad.

Tail wagging indicates excitement, not happiness. Happiness is communicated by a dog in multiple ways, from the ear position and facial expression to wiggling to even putting the butt up in the air and upper body down suggesting playfulness (yoga downward dog position).

It can be outside the balcony when Johnny is not home. Just forget about the dog hair. Use a blanket for the couch and buy a roller to pick up the hair. Lordy seems to have anxiety / stress issues related to the environment. It could be anything that triggers his flight response. His behavior is very similar to my own pooch, a former stray. When he gets fearful on our walks (I think certain sounds trigger him. It could be anything that sounds like thunder because he is absolutely terrified of it), the only thing I can do is let him lead me back home. If I try to continue our walk, it only makes him more stressed. He'll eventually lie down and won't move (unless we move in the direction he wants to go!) It's definitely his safe space. Get a Gentle Leader. Another really easy way to keep a dog from pulling is to keep the leash very short, stand with the dog just behind your left leg, long branch in your tight hand. Before your start walking and as you walk, swing the switch in an arc left to right. the dog will not want his nose to hit the switch and will stay behind your left leg. it harms his neck to let him pull like that.

He tried to excuse his behaviour which was almost mental in mu6lt opinion.

Yeah. No one will ever really know what Lordy has been thru. He's adjusting to his new place now and does prob like being away from 20 other dogs. He has your full attention but y'all could bond better and establish who is boss, esp on walks. When you leave the balcony door open does he not want to wander throughout the apartment, esp when you go to another room? I hope he feels safe. He's happy when he wags his tail alot and smiles. I can see you want to make him happy and give him a safe home. Remember rn he's not trying to make you happy yet. He will mess up occasionally. Do they have pee pads you can use for now until he learns? Remember, a dog will pick up on your emotions/ temperament.

Can also take a while to build his muscle fitness if he hasn't walked much. A nice thick bed can also help his comfort level if he is feeling muscle sore, along with some gentle massage and rubs. Also at the moment the balcony is his safe space while he learns to adjust to you, other dogs and his new environment. First and foremost I know your videos have been posted out of timeline order and your Dog is doing a lot better now. I have trained and taken in many dogs in my life and one of my biggest issue is you putting him on your balcony. To him it feels like a bigger cage. When you come back inside from a walk open your door and take his leash off as soon as you get inside. It makes them feel more part of the family. You need to be in control of your dog and he needs to know that and that you're there to protect him as well because in time he will reciprocate. For an example what if a dog that is aggressive comes at him. You're not going todo shit but be clueless on how to take control of the situation. I myself have had that happen. My dog was well mannered around other dogs but the one we came across was not. He won't listen to you especially in that situation. He pulls you around like a rag doll your a big guy my dude and yes all dogs do this in the beginning but just because he dose doesn't mean you should allow or give into him. I'm 135lb's and I've had way bigger and more hard headed dogs then him that I've had to establish my hierarchy. This doesn't mean to be an ass hole to him either. He has puppy brain and trauma still. Start with doing simple things like sit, lay and stay. When he does that give him a treat and pet him. Positive reinforcement is key. In two to three weeks you should be able to set a treat in the middle of the room or yard and walk away after telling him to stay and he should do as he is told. His breed of dog is very smart and loving. Super close to German Shepards, my favorite breed of dog. He will be great with time and with working WITH him on a constant basis he'll be a dog you could walk outside with no leash. Don't tell me its impossible because I have my dog on that level and I love her and she loves me. Much love.

I tried everything with my 50 lb pit bull mix who pulled like that. You need to buy a harness for him. It won’t choke him and give you better control because it pulls on his chest and doesn’t choke him. Go the harness route. Also if you let him roam your apartment it will make him calmer. He needs a full month of adjustment. You’ll notice a difference. Also when you’re gone leave tv on so he feels like someone is home.

Growing up, my mom was a certified dong trainer and leash pulling was a very common issue she used to help owners with. It can be done in a few weeks as long as you're 100% consistent while they're learning. This means keeping them on a VERY short leash and establishing yourself as the lead every single time you go on a walk. It's frustrating and requires a lot of patience, but it's an easy problem to fix. There's plenty of good videos on KZfaq that will show some techniques to get you started.

Johnny, really recommend the “it’s me or the dog” channel/show. I don’t have a dog but just watch it all the time cause it’s really interesting 😅 Victoria Stilwell is the host and she’s a goddess of ethical dog training! She gives tips for any kind of behavior (especially pulling). For example, as soon as they pull, you can try just turning around and walking the other way until they start pulling again and so on. Eventually they realize that pulling will not get them to where they want to be and stop! I’ve tried it with some of my friends’ dogs and it worked really well! (Although the dogs were really confused at first😂)
@maxksondzyk

As for wanting to come home really soon, there may be a plethora of reasons and it’s likely not your fault at all. Lordie might feel a bit stressed outside, especially considering that it’s a rather busy area compared to the forest that he’s used to. He might also be a little fearful of other dogs and people. Overall, I’d suggest either finding a behavioral expert on dogs/a trainer or at least giving the show a watch and maybe landing on an episode where the same problem is discussed.

Hi Johnny, hope you're well. Remember the Dog has got used to being let out of his cage to go to the toilet and then put straight back in the cage, that's why he heads straight home after he poops, You need to break the habit, You tell him which way to go, he needs walking, a lot. You need him to listen to your commands, and more importantly, he needs to obey them. he is house-trained, so don't keep him on the Balcony. You need to give him 100% of your time NOW, in the early stages of giving him a home. when he does good things, you need to reward him, give him tiny treats, and hold them in your hand so he can smell them, then he will follow you anywhere until he trusts you 100%, to the point where he will begin to protect you because he will love you. If the dogo doesn't wanna eat you can buy salmon oil for dogs (that stuff is being sold in pet shops it has a dispenser that you push and spray the oil, it's convenient, but keep it in fridge) and spray a bit on their food, but beware, he might not wanna eat his food without oil anymore after that. Also you can get a dog harness and fasten your leash to 2 points on that harness (there should be 2 metal rings - one on neck and one on back) that wan you can yank him a little bit when he pulls too much on the part that's connected to the back, so his neck is not touched and he should slow down. That way your leash will be a U - figure, connected to 2 points on his harness. That's the way we use it, our dog also got stressed and screwed up by war unfortunately. And thank you for adopting a dog in Ukraine. And if you have some dog questions you can contact me in telegram.
