I figured I'd document the first 21 days from the moment my giant African land snail laid eggs, to them hatching and growing.

I have a savannah monitor and giant African land snails would be a huge part of his diet in the wild. So like you, I bought two snails that I keep as pets and whose babies I feed to my animals. I say animals, as one of my bearded dragons absolutely loves tiny snails, so she has them quite regularly too. I keep the snails in a 5 x 3 x 3ft fully bioactive enclosure with branches, moss, live plants and hides and vines, you name it, they have it. They share the enclosure with my giant African millipedes and they coexist really nicely together. I also breed Dubia roaches and they too are in the same enclosure. It truly is a multi species setup and it’s great to just sit and watch them at night. I also leave all the eggs to hatch naturally in the enclosure and when I need some, I just wait till they are all out at night, and pluck whatever I need right out. Be it snails or roaches. This way I know that all the animals are living their best lives, eating quality food and supplements and enjoying huge amounts of space, up until they are fed off. Feeder animals are still animals and I really do believe they should be treated with the same amount of respect as our pets. And just incase anyone is wondering, all the animals have the same heat and humidity requirements and they do not predate on each other either. I have to say, it’s one of my most favourite setups. 🪲🕷️🦗🐌😍

Aw wow that sounds amazing! Do you find they end up eating any plants in the bioactive tank?

@@leopardgeckotalk Yes they do! They get a huge variety of foods yet they still nibble on the plants. 😂 I don’t think there’s a single leaf that hasn’t got a hole in it, the little “insert swear word here” 😂 I ordered some lichen covered sticks the other day…..still found them munching on my plants. 🪴 🌱🐌 Another thing I forgot to mention, you said you don’t handle your snails much. You should! They absolutely love little shell scratches and once they get used to you, they will let you massage their whole body too. Mine love it. I keep my hands wet and they stretch out and “sploot” and you can tell they really enjoy it. Even chin rubs 😂 I’ve really fallen in love with the little fellows. I call mine Bill and Ben, my African snail men. Don’t ask 😂😂😂

Yes, once they start to lay eggs, you're gonna get a LOT of fast growing baby snails! I switched from cuttle fish to garden lime as a calcium source for my feeder GALs. Much cheaper and it avoids the potentially harmful salt content of the cuttlefish bones.

I find any knowledge interesting at my old age. I do have a suggestion. Look up doing terrarium background with drylock. But use human safe paint for colors. Some videos show using the cement colors but have proven poisonous to the plants. That knowledge is slow to get out there. But the drylock method allows for a great enclosure setup that can be cleaned easier than the coconut fibre and sand. Brads bioactive enclosures and Serpa Design for the method. Hi from probably your oldest subscriber at 59 Young. Your videos have helped me give my geckos better lives. Thank you.

What about feeding slugs rather than snails? There was a video showing leopard geckos eating slugs in the wild. So that you have a food source for all of the reptiles. Just a thought?

Awesome! Also, random question- I have 2 cresties, and it’s summer here and I was wondering if I could switch them from heat lamps to LED lights to save energy and not overheat my geckos. 🦎 It is usually 68-72 degrees in the room during the day without the lamps. Is this too cold? If so, I’ll stick with the lamps, but I would love to try LED if possible!

As long as the temperature inside, the enclosure is the correct temperature they really don’t need supplemental heat and for me that’s especially the case because I live in Florida so if I were to use heat on my flying gecko, she would die.

To be honest I use LEDs and heater at the same time, but the heater is on a thermostat, so if the temp is reached, the stat will turn the heater off. So as long as the stat is working, it should be fine. I will also use a little usb desk fan on top of the tank to add air flow and cool it down a little :)

I need help with my leopard gecko. She hasn't eaten in 3 months but is still alive and her tail is round. I don't know what is wrong with her. She normally eats mealworms but now she refuses to eat them or walks over them. So I tried to give her crickets but she didn't eat those either. I think the temperature is fine, her heat pad works, and she looks healthy. Please help me, I don't want my leopard gecko to die.

She has a video of advice for when your gecko isn't eating. Otherwise I second the other person, you should contact a vet.
