one idea that comes to mind is some wielders using the glass blade as a trickster weapon, blowing a bubble of thin glass shards which look harmless but can cut an artery, doing fakeouts by bending the blade mid strike, melting down other users weapons with the touch to throw off their heat. It definitely has potential to be kinda devious, maybe a fourth style emerged from people outside of the culture surrounding Glasswielding.

I’ve also been thinking up a glass blowing magic system, but the direction I’m taking it focuses on the magic as a world-defining technology. Glass blowers enchant glass using whispered wishes and control enchanted glass with resonating songs. Enchanted glass is the most dynamic material on the planet and dominates both architecture and the battlefield. It can be harder than steel or bounce like rubber, all depending on how it’s enchanted. It can create illusions of light and sound, change temperature, or change form, but enchantments are always stuck within the glass. Light in the cities is always cast in a thousand different colors, refracting through the endless hues of glass which make up every building, bridge, and street side food stand. The homes of the rich are lit by glowing glass orbs, their food cooked on magically-heating glass stoves, and their closets filled with robes of silky, flowing glass. Battlefields are covered with the technicolor shards of weapons and armor, which are fragile once they’ve shattered and their enchantment have evaporated. I want the magic system to also have a big focus on illusion, but the whole thing is very early! Anyways, what’s amazing about human creativity is that two people can both think, “WOW, that’s cool, I want to write about that,” and then take it in two very different directions. I’m very excited to read your book when it comes out! I’m a very new writing hobbyist and my glass blowing magic system isn’t one I plan to write for a while. So what I’m trying to say is that I’m glad I’ll get to read yours!!

Would a Glass-Wielder ever reform their weapon mid fight? I imagine that Michelle Yeoh fight in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon you showed but instead of weapons breaking, both constantly reform their weapon to gain an advantage. And the fight ends with the room starting to frost over from the combatants absorbing so much of the ambient heat to reform the siraglass

I always love ideas about turning concepts on their heads. What would a glass wielding discipline look like if they focused on stillness and meditation rather than the fluidity and motion the other styles exemplify? Would their skill be entirely defensive? Or would they be able to achieve a transcendant clarity, knowing exactly where and when to strike an opponent in a single decisive moment, able to see through their opponents intentions?

I think an intresting consequence of how you have defined this system, is that easiest way for someone with the Touch to use thier power in combat is just to fight hand to hand with blisteringly hot fists, which while effective against most people wouldn't be much better then a normal fist fight against another person with the Touch. This implies to me that Glass-Wielding might have been developed by Touch havers to fight other Touch havers. Which give an intresting way for the culture around the art to develop. One example is that somone who causes direct burns with thier Touch could be seen as unrefined and barbaric or inversly some might place a taboo on drawing a glass blade on anyone who's not a glass wielder.

This magic system i really cool, well balanced and has room for growth. To touch on the styles in the video you mainly focused on the uses of the glass in blade format, which gives room for loads of varents from a long tachi to short stilleto, curved blades and ripply ones. I heard someone in the comments mention a trickster class, expanding on that idea the weielder could also carry smaller orbs of glass that could be molded into shurikens or making quick barriers, obviously they would relaivetly small in a fight but wit prep time comes more versatility like setting traps.

I'd be really interested to see a bit more variation in the glassblowing "forms". You introduced them really well in the video, but I think it would also be cool if the time and effort put into the glass weapon impacted it's strength or effectiveness. Maybe the glassblowers had to maintain a sort of "balance" between how frequently they re-made their weapons (therefore making it stronger) and the quality of the weapons (whether they can use them to actually do damage to their opponent). Additionally, this also makes size a factor. If you want to create something really big, you need a lot of time, and this could play into a "team build" where one strong glassblower takes time to forge a powerful weapon (maybe for teammates too) while the others are protecting him with small, frequently remolded weapons. This could both enhance your current styles of glassblowing (Which, by the way, I thought were REALLY cool), and also maybe spark some more creativity in that brilliant mind of yours c: Also, how would glassblowers get access to glass during a battle? If they were suddenly ambushed, would they have a weapon on hand, or a ball of glass that they had to quickly re-mold, or would they store molten glass somewhere in a hot container? Is it possible for these glassblowers to "steal" glass from their opponents to use in their own weapons? So many questions that this magic system has sparked, and I'm excited to buy the book as soon as it comes out.

An interesting Idea would be the amount of heat each glasswielder can put out; this could effect the martial arts-form they use (example: people who can put out more heat use the slither-form) and it could also be an indicator on how proficiet a glasswielder is (form differ in expression and difficulty)

Maybe a glass wielder could quicken the degrading of an opponent's weapon. Maybe the glass cools at different rates as your making it so one part of it is weaker than another. Volcanos and hot-springs could become highly contested natural resources. Maybe there are different qualities of glass and different glass recipes. Smaller weapons seem easier to make compared to larger weapons, but an army with spears probably beats an army with daggers.

Honestly ‘The Touch’ itself is an interesting basis for things, because it can absorb heat. Ok my questions for you, based on ones I asked myself about my own magic systems. What happens if your mould is interrupted by someone else with the touch by absorbing the heat that allows your glass wielding and then moulds their own blade? What moulds are faster to make, such as can you make a shield faster to defend from an attack faster than a senja can be made to attack because it’s a simpler shape? Is manipulating preexisting glass faster than moulding new ones, such as moulding said shield into a senja to strike quickly? Can someone only half mould a senja to make a sort of liquid blade and then mould it completely as it strikes an opponent or their weapons, causing it to either disarm them or stay on them? Do weapons become harder to make or stronger the more complicated they are? Can globs of glass be thrown to make a sort of projectile style? Are people with the touch coveted by royal families, like wanting them to marry in? How far can the touch go with absorbing heat? Are glass weapons made with higher heat strong, such as would a senja made with a bonfire be as strong as one made withe the heat from a volcano? I like the magic systems you make and just wanted to ask you a few questions about this one since I only just noticed you released this.
@hadrianpollard
@hadrianpollard 19 күн бұрын
These are such good questions -- Your intuition is great. Senja can be part molded (like in the slitherform) and definitely can be made into different, faster shapes than others. Properties of the glass will determine the hardness or other traits. Projectles will definitely be in there. In ancient history, glass-wielders were more like royalty, but were almost all but exterminated before book 1 of this series. Volcanic glass will be in there!

this series and the videos on this channel channels honestly got me wanting to revisit some old concepts of mine. regarding the glass magic what are the possibilities of exploring the transparency of glass itself? one of the biggest impact that glass has brought into our history is that we can see through it. and due to that alchemy developed fast and developed into chemistry. while not literally like that i imagine you could explore such a concept in thematics. like having these glass powers could in a way allow one to see deeper into oneself. also any potential addition of flux into the setting? maybe its something these folks can use to make melting and reshaping their glass even faster but its a limited resource. flux in glass blowing and metalworking is any substance that is added into the melting process that reduces melting point of the material allowing one to more quickly work on the piece. rather funny coincidence is that a while back i was reading one of bruce lee's quotes "water flows water crash put it in a bottle it becomes the bottle, put it in a tea pot it becomes the teapot, be water my friend" took it and went with "be iron, ya need to work hard to melt yourself down first" sorta like glass. changing is easier said than done after all. it needs alot of work to achieve. also the urge to make a martial arts centered power system within ones setting is relatable lol. in my own world its systems are more centered around items, gear, and magical technologies and artifacts. to allow martial arts to compete i added in mnemic weapons, weapons which can remember and project memories into reality, even memories that are flawed and mixed up lets people project slashes further than it actually is, amplify bashes with clubs, set up quick draw mine fields from memories of drawing the weapon from a relaxed position. even mix memories like if one fought near fire they could potentially project flame slashes. etc. the weapons could even develop an ego from all the memories it builds up.

If i could give any realistic thoughtful insight into this beautiful idea, i'd consider not just having every style based off snakes as cool as the idea is. There is other animals/insects that could fit the theme well, it'd also open up the comparison to martial arts further as many martial arts have an animal inspiration to them. I'd also consider what the effect of having someone else who'm has the touch tries to manipulates another's Glassblades? can they infuse there glassblades with other elements? Such as how some glassblowers use varies colors, objects, other glass to strengthen, add effects or color to there art? All interesting thing's i'd consider as they all could be fun things to twist and change the style.

@acidiccaterpillar8804
@acidiccaterpillar8804 Ай бұрын
The first thought that comes to mind would be a type of glass user who molds other weapons weapons mid-fight. Conducting heat through blocks and strikes into the openents weapon. Maybe even merging the two blades into a more abstract shape like a klingon blade and each user struggles to redirect the most sharpened or hottest part of the shape before the other user can mold that shape in defense? Like instead of it just being two blades it would be a constant power struggle to manipulate this liquid that is both blade and whip and bluggioning instrument. Something like water bending where it's the quickness of the users deciding the form of one shared blob of glass. This is of course more like a telekinetic manipulation of the glass rather then just using touch to disperse heat but maybe this is a feature available to the most skilled glass users, to extend a path of heat outside their body to make the glass follow.
@acidiccaterpillar8804
@acidiccaterpillar8804 Ай бұрын
Also, maybe users need to carry a natural heat source like a lighter or a torch or a stone that they draw heat from other then their own body as the more heat they put out the more their body heat drops resulting in a kind of hypothermia Maybe we see a battle where the main character has to keep a fire going while the battle rages on because their internal body temperature is so low that they could go into shock at any moment Or glass users could extend this heat into other things besides glass like to start a campfire for cooking or to boil water to purify a wound.

If forming is so fast it can be done mid fight, couldn't a glass wielder pump enough energy into their hands to completely liquify the incoming weapon, like a candy cane swiping at a volcano? Just like the philosopher's stone exists, the Rebirth egg exists. If you find one, you can channel your semen into it and be reborn as an omnipotent being. Women can wield semen too with mechanical balls. Page wielding. Humans lose the ability to read and write but in exchange they can wield the power of pages. Everything written in the books of the past can be made into reality. Mayomancing. The ability to wield mayonnaise. eggsplosion, soursplash, whitening, and more. Every property of mayonnaise can be wielded by man. Somehow man has evolved to fuse with mayonaise and gained special abilities. however the formula for mayonnaise is missing and only a true master of Mayomancing can discover it. Meet John, he is the main character and he is gonna be the first to master mayomancing and bring back the formula. Damn man. I really could keep going. Thanks for the inspiration.
