a higher capacity oil pump is what you need. that is the COMPLETE fix for hemi engines 2009 and up. oil weight doesnt matter. oil capacity does. theres just not enough pressure to oil the cam and lifters at idle and at low rpm speeds. a higher capacity oil pump increases pressure AND amount of oil to cover the top end. thats the only fix for these engines to eliminate the hemi tick

I’ve tested mine at 7000 miles and it was an excellent condition That could not be said for a turbo charged engine so you understand the difference aspirated engines and it’s not a Ford with a ton of blow by which all Fords have you don’t need to change it at 3000 miles there’s a difference I owned Ford with 75,000 miles with blow by always consuming oil. It never stopped from New once a hemi has broken it’s a 350,000 mile engine at the minimum.

For anyone who believes you can't put 30 viscosity oil in these instead of 20 viscosity, what it comes down to is the main engine bearing gaps on the crankshaft, now thinner oils will travel faster especially in cold weather, so a 5w20 will flow to the cam faster than a 5w30 will... However in the case of the 5.7 Hemi engine, the tolerances allow for up to a 15w40 in actuality, if you look at any engine machine shop spec sheets, its fine... race cars run 15W50 btw ( loose is fast ) I was told by an 60 year engine builder once, they run loose tolerances and 50 viscosity oil. (also the w, in 5w30 means winter rating, not weight.. stop saying weight.. The second number is the viscosity of the oil. In general 5w30 for the Hemi, in cold weather 0w20, in extreme heat 10w40. There you go.

Hemi tick. There is a cast webbing under the cam, that runs the full length of the cam. Idle is what kills the lifter. Throws oil on the web and not the cam. @edjackson43898 ай бұрын
The modern hemis are not splash lubricated at the cam. Oil flows directly to the cam and lifters. I do agree that extended idle times are bad for them, because of the low oil pressure that occurs at full operating temps with worn out thin 5w20 oil. How would the MDS lifters operate just on splash without direct oil pressure. Don't go past 5k miles with oil changes, run 5w30, and keep idle times to a minimum (especially in the summer) and a stock 5.7 hemi wil run forever.

The hemi tick is due to lack of lubrication and can be solved by putting the hellcat oil pump on your truck instead of using the stock one. That gives an extra 2 to 3 lb of pressure to push that oil up where it needs to go. Then you would tune out the notification on your dashboard saying the pressure is different from the check engine light and you will not have that issue anymore. You should not change the viscosity of the oil in your truck to try to solve this. I'm glad it's working for now but that's not the best way to take care of the problem.
@ZachTheRipper7167 ай бұрын
A better pump will definitely contribute to solving the issue, however the hellcat pump puts out way more psi than just a few. Isnt a direct fit either. Just buy a Melling and you'll be better off.

How about switching the oil pump out to one with higher flow? Changing oil thickness may make the oil pump work harder or possibly restrict the flow.
@ShawnGilbert19677 ай бұрын
Techs are telling people to do that use the Hellcat pump is the ACTUAL fix, and if you want to retain MDS you use the non hellcat spring to make your ecu happy...the main issue is idle oil pressure and flow....hellcat pumps solve this because they are high pressure and use the SAME lifter, don't see this failure at remotely the rate in fact I haven't met anyone with the hellcat tick and it uses the same lifter ( the non mds ones )

It's generally an additive package vs thicker TBN to make a 5w ( both are 5 not talking about an insane Ow which the scat pack specifies or void of warranty 0w-40 which is HARD to source and in both cases you also have to male sure they are Mopar spec oil for warranty retention ask me how I know )...nothing wrong with running a 5w30 go have better protection when at operating temp but cold starts would sound similar..I run 5w-30 in my 21 Limited Ram as well.... I don't think you should tell people that is what cured your truck it was on your first oil change and that along could have settled it down regardless of viscosity ( though no harm in running 5w-30)... Also as you stated several years of owners manuals had the owner running which oils since 2009, well those engines ticked and failed as well even when running THAT years recommendation lifter failure isn't new to this engine at all....its a design flaw which is why ALL the Mopar tech say one of the huge variables is idle time on engine not viscosity ran... Also in my research most lifters fail if they are gonna from 45k-75k you gonna need about 120k to feel safe ( seems like if they make it 100k they make it 200k lol damn)... There WAS a major change to this engine since 2009, iirc it was 2017 they went to a lifter with a much larger captured needle bearing on the wheel.... Lots of assumptions and misinformation, but imho your dead right they push 0w and 5w20 for CAFE compliance, where these big truck engines often hauling loads could benefit from a 5w30 and later a 5w40 ( same cold performance more film strength when warm )... However let's not let dodge of the hook for their design flaw here, my wife's ride turbo gas engine is specced at 0w20 running much warmer oil temps than my Ram down the road, with a much more complex system and Jesus she extends her oil change ( I've tried everything down to taking it myself ), a few weeks ago I was Laying under her ride in a cold and hot start scenario....so quite so tight that engine has another 100k in it easy..... Sad thing is dodge bolts this engine real tight, you add a hellcat oil pump and no more lifter issues, it doesn't have enough oil pressure at idle ( which raising viscosity can help with) for the way the black and MDS is designed... These engines would go 300k if not for the valve train....sad...but even at that if dodge stood behind them could give em a pass for it.... I know a guy personally that trucks to dodge dealerships there are piles of cams, lifters and heads hauled off...piles and piles of lifter cam failures... Best of luck to everyone and myself....lol

I never heard my hemi tick. Just started running bad. Very little power. Lifter collapsed chewed up camshaft. 2012 Dodge Ram 96k. Purchased new oil changes every 3k. Never abused. Daily driver mostly highway. I believe that the MDS did this to my engine. I had it deleted. Full time 8 now.

Bought a 2021 Ram 1500 for my wife with 30k miles on it. It's going to Idle ALOT. I'm going to replace the oil pump with a hellcat pump. Gives higher volume and higher pressure at Idle.

Higher oil pressure will cause a check engine light. Run the hellcat pump with the factory Ram 1500 spring, then you get higher volume but same OEM pressure, which means no CEL

It's a Bit more $$, I was able to get it at $10.00 Per Quart,(Schaeffers), from a Dealer in Town. See what ya think if ya Try it in the future? AMSOIL is Very Costly Like $15.00 PER QUART unless you sign up as a Preferred Customer, But you Still have to Pay Shipping on the AMSOIL...

Switching to a Melling high-volume oil pump (20% more flow than a stock MOPAR pump) is a huge improvement in lubrication as well. Most hemi lifters that fail are due to underlubrication during long idle periods - most of these engines that fail are in trucks that idle for long hours (eg: police trucks).

I would like to see you make a video cutting open the oil filter on the 7,000 mile oil change to see how the filter media performed… I have a 5.7L Ram and the oil filter is not much bigger than what is on my two cylinder john deere riding mower… I run my oil changes out to 3,000 miles and I am skeptical that this small filter will go much past 3,000 miles without some oil bypassing and running unfiltered oil directly to the main bearings… And yes, I have tried putting 3 different bigger oil filters on my truck, but the steering aluminum housing is directly below the oil filter and they cannot be installed in the factory position… And yes, I could put a remote oil filter kit on the truck, but I don’t want to at this time.

The main problem with these Hemi’s is the splash oil system for the cam. Those head ports are horizontal not vertical which of course lets oil flow down faster than horizontal. Here is what I’ve learned tonight and in the last couple of days about these Hemi’s, especially the 6.4. 1. Splash oiling is a big problem at idle especially. 2. I’m changing to 5W-30 full synthetic. 3. I’m going to start putting a zinc additive in the oil. I’ll deal with the Catalytic Converter if needed later. 4. MDS we get turned off every time I drive the truck. It’s just a matter of mashing a button. 5. I am also thinking about adding Lucas oil stabilizer. I heard BG makes a good additive too.

Injectors are loud on these engines. That's normal. Just do some more research and confirm you don't have a manifold tick or the unfortunate lifter tick.
@rag5283Ай бұрын
The tick will typically not show up that early. The oil getting to the top of the engine is completely connected to engine rpm.Too low and the oil doesn't lubricate enough. Idling is the killer. Above 1,500 rpm the oil will be sufficient. I will use my gear shift option on my transmission if it has been at too low rpm for any long period.

My 2022 Ram 2500 6.4 specifies 0w-40 in the manual & on the oil cap. I only hear a “tic” for 30 seconds upon startup but the manual specifically states this particular “tic” is completely normal (and it is). The question is, is 0W-40 sufficient? I’d have to imagine it is. At most maybe 5w-40 but not real reason not to trust 0W-40 at the moment.

Always use quality oil, like Amsoil. The other is don't let a hemi sit idling. The camshaft is a long way from the crank throws and doesn't get properly oiled. This is specific to the hemi head design as the pushrods are at an extreme angle to the rockers and to offset this they simply raised the cam within the block, which caused low rpm oiling problems. Probably why older oil is less capable of reaching this point and properly oiling when it does than fresh oil. You don't have to change every 3k miles. Just buy the best oil available.
@mypronouniswtf55598 ай бұрын
It doesnt rely on splash,it has pressurized oil system and it has oil passages/gallery above the crankshaft that keep lifters,cam etc oiled all the time.Look at the block! Funny the 2003-2008 Hemi is designed the same and does not have the issue the Eagle Head Hemi does thats the 2009-current Hemi.
@chadd5878 ай бұрын
@@mypronouniswtf5559 I did look at the block. You think I just made it up?
@ShawnGilbert19677 ай бұрын
Yea that's why it needs more idle pressure from the hellcat pump which solves this issue...and by default techs agree the number 1 variable is idle percentage SO that does indicate a design flaw...ug

Do you use 89 octane? I wonder why people use 87 octane from forums I've read. I'm going to 5w-30 too then in my 2022 Ram 3.6L pentastar instead of 0w-20 water stuff!!! I didn't get the hemi due to hemi tick, manifold studs breaking, poor mpg, and cylinder deactivation. My v6 is paired with a pedal commander city +3 setting so its a totally different truck. I purchased this after my 2002 saturn sc2 died after having it for 19 years. I went to school for automotive, diesel, and aircraft so I never go to the dealer bc they do more damage than fix, and scratch up the paint. When I first got my Ram I had to adjust the tierod bc the steering wheel was crooked a hair off. I aslo change the cabin airfilter regularly bc its a bad design, I put a borescope camera up inside the heater core box and it was really dirty, cleaned with lysol and water. The brakes squeaked, was bone dry from factory, so I put CRC disk caliper brake grease on the pad ears and metal shims... problem fixed! Only 6,500 miles on it and I had the cold weather belt squeal since day one... changed tensioner, gates belt and today the idler pulley under the motor generator unit, no squeal but will wait for a cold snap for verification. I didn't purchase any extra warranty and got invoice pricing with rebates, researching for two years before purchasing my first and last new vehicle. I rotate my vehicle's and Saturn is my favorite one out of them its bulletproof, I like older vehicles more than this new technology stuff. I have halogen front lights, swapped them out with night edition and for the rear purched led taillights programmed with alfa obd, also put on a front bumper cover on it to protect the cheap fragile paint. Led headlights assemblies are really expensive if they go bad they may need to be programmed; no thanks, see it all the time on the road. My other vehicles include my 1997 Saturn sc2 , 96,000 miles, 2011 Toyota Sienna 131,000 miles, to 1997 eclipse's gst modified 300-330hp 131,000 miles and 1998 spyder convertible 38,000 miles and three motorcycles 2002 R6, 2002 yzf600, and 2003 1100 honda shadow spirit all carburetorated. My vehicles will out live me. I never get rid of them unless they die or can't be saved.
