The Dreaded HEMI TICK.. How bad is it and should you reconsider buying a Mopar?

I explain the two types of "Hemi Ticks" that seem to happen on both the 5.7 and the 6.4 liter Mopar Hemi engines. I also explain how to diagnose the difference between the two and what you can do to not only fix the issue but prevent it as well. Would this keep you from buying a hemi?

Check out the KZfaqr REIGNITED. the hemi tick video. 5 months ago. He recommends changing out the oil pump on the 6.4 / 5.7 to the hellcat one. It issue is OIL VOLUME. over time with higher miles on these motors wears down on the cam. He's a dodge mechanic for over a decade

@@charlesstepinski9327 i know your comment is old, but here to remind everybody that melling released a more efficient high volume oil pump. it's a lot better than the hellcat's, getting 20-25% more volume being pumped to the top end compared to the hellcat's 10-15% increase. this is also info from reignited and he has a video on it. go to summit racing equipment and search up 10452HV.

Just want to make a point of this. I am an ASE Certified Master Automotive Technician, of 18 years. I drive a 2016 RAM 2500 Laramie 6.4L, the recommended OFL interval is 10k miles. I change my oil every 5k miles. I use only AMSOIL Signature 0w40. Today, 02/22/2021, I developed a lifter tick. I have replaced dozens of Lifters & camshafts, on hemis, due to bad lifters or the rollers on the lifter seizing & wiping out the cam lobes - I always thought it was due to customers not changing their oil regularly enough and going 10k miles between changes which I have always thought was asinine!!!! Well, here we are.

This was a great information on the hemi tick.. I had a engine tick on my 2016 Mustang GT350. It scared me. I did have ford check it out and they said this was normal. I did hear the 5.0 engines in the Mustangs had the ticks that turned to catastrophic engine failure. Piston slap. It in 2018 was all over the internet. I will be watching and listening to my Scat. Good topic tonight. Proper oil viscosity is critical. So many people think the 0-30 spec is "too thin" and run thicker oil. Bad move with the MDS system. Several videos on youtube show the failed lifters as well as how to check the MDS valves and VVT for debris. The factory service bulletin says if there are metal shavings in the MDS vavle the motor is toast. Big thing is to catch it early. Like tooth cavities, ignoring it gets painful.

Great video ! My last Challenger was a 13 RT, and it started the Hemi Tick after the dealership for their hands on it and improperly changed the oil. That being said, it was the lifters and sounded exactly as you described. Since i recently got a 20 Scat Pack hoping to not have any issues with this one. However this one is brand new and I am keeping a very close eye on it. Love this channel and your videos. Always great info !

Always enjoy your videos sir! I have discussed the "hemi tick" with the lifter/valve train engineer at corporate (where I work). Internal research showed no correlation with MDS lifters. The problem is with regular maintenance and proper oil used. The new vehicles that tick from the dealer at new can develop an air pocket in the lifter from short run time moving the vehicle around the lot an shutting it down...and there is a bulletin that addresses this.

Great Video RacerX, The 5.7 exhaust manifold happened on mine so I used that repair time to swap to shorty headers, only one of the exhaust manifold bolts took any serious pressure to remove, about four came out with a 6" ratchet handle pressure, the rest came out using a 3" ratchet handle no effort at all to remove. I think this is because the engine exhaust headers are installed with the engine out of the car then once installed are never retorqued, even though most all the header installation instructions require a retorque after heat cycling the engine. But once out of the factory door they are never serviced again as far as I know. IMO the most important thing regarding the 2nd HEMI tick, besides the great points of proper engine oil changing, taking accrued miles and engine idle hours into account, is using the proper suggested weight oil for the engine. One thing I would like for you to investigate into is on the 5.7L HEMI, the intake manifold bolts will also loosen over time and require being retorqued, and that happens on pretty much every 5.7 with the ABS intake manifold. Retorquing those bolts brings snappier response of the throttle back like new. Thanks RacerX! David

I have seen in the last few days other videos about this and have looked into it. I own a 2015 Ram 2500 6.4l and a 2020 scat pack shaker. Some of those videos and stories I read scared the crap out of me at first. But you're right Racer X, REGULAR MAINTENANCE goes a loooong ways. And it's not just with oil changes but trans and dif services as well. Driving these performance cars are extremely fun, maintenance can be expensive. But it's necessary for the longevity, safety and resale value of the car. We spend a lot of $$ for these cars and all the mods we put on them. So looking at what it would cost you to repair/replace lifters and cam ($3000-5000) an $80 dollar oil change every 3500-4000 mile is totally worth it! Trans service every 30,000 $140 +/-. Plus there are some really great fluid additives you can add in for a couple bucks for added protection. I think the ones that fail (2-5%) are due to lack of maintenance. Running them low/empty of fluid and not changing the fluids regularly. And I NEVER go by with what the vehicle tells me, that oil life indication/gauge. I change it at least every 4000 even with synthetic oil. I've had several 20 year plus dealership mechanics tell me that the cars with a regular 3 to 4000 mile oil change, synthetic or Conventional rarely come in for any kind of engine issues or failures. Just my thoughts on all this. Great vids X! Enjoy them all. Keep up the good work and info!

I posted above you the problem I see.Many dodge owners--many younger ones get in over their head and then do not have the money for maintenence and premium gas and changing the oil sooner since those same guys are dogging the shit out of them everywhere.Almost half if not more of Dodge SRTs at the car meets I goto have bald or balding tires--I see them putting normal gas in them also.I am wealthy enough to afford one but I chose an AWD Stinger--because it is as fast in a str8 line as the American V8s--has a 10 year warranty and gets much better fuel mileage. The insurance is also way cheaper because SRTs wreck a lot and get stolen in the top 3 of cars. I was going to get a Jeep SRT--but dodge would not give a longer warranty and basically said exactly what I posted--that the customer base abuses the cars is why they break down--it is that and spotty reliability--also the MPG over a weekend was at 10 mpg and it was DRINKING premium fuel.I would buy an AWD chrsyler or charger SRT--but only with AWD--longer warranty and under 60k.Dodge lo gives one of the lowest on trade ins--but wants max price for their cars.

About 4 months ago, my 392 srt8 started ticking. A week later I started to get misfires and it was throwing p0300 codes. I took it into a dealership; they pulled the oil control valve and it was sprinkled with metal shavings. They did a teardown and said I needed a new long block and rebuild costing $12k! Fortunately I bought the warranty when I bought the car. FCA approved the replacement and the dealership did the work in about 3 weeks. I got the car back with a new long block and all I had to do was baby it for 500 miles. It runs great now! The only change in my driving habits is, since I have an automatic, I drive only with the autoshifter(to keep it out of mds mode)and do all my shifts manually and I don't leave it idling while parked. I love my dodge challenger. It is so much fun to drive and my wife loves it too! RaceX, I love the channel and keep up the good work!

Another spot-on video from RacerX. Thanks! I've had 4 vehicles with the 5.7 Liter (345ci) HEMI Engine and 1 vehicle with the 6.4 Liter (392ci) HEMI Engine. The 5.7s all had the MDS system and easily traveled over 250,000 miles combined with zero HEMI ticks. My 2015 SRT 392 has a 6-speed so it doesn't have MDS and only has 29,700 miles on it, but also doesn't suffer from the HEMI tick. Perhaps, in part, because they all received regular oil changes with Full Synthetic engine oil and "better" oil filters.

Great info, thank you. In brief my 2015 SRT 392 ownership that was brand new and I finally had the Challenger I wanted since my neighbor got his 1970 Challenger 340, what a screamer and since he was a cop we went to a highway close by and uncorked it. Mine after 2 weeks started falling apart, incompetent dealer svc clowns telling me in the performance pages that the car was running hot with my oil temp at 254 degrees. I showed them and they told me that's in factory spec, which was a major lie, on the 4th, yes 4th svc call they again said there's nothing wrong. When they were bringing it back to me the radiator blew. That's the beginning of my nightmare, not getting into hot air but, the other issues I'll mention are the a/c, transmission, 2 rear ends and the computer took a dump and they never did anything about fixing my car. They didn't even care to, the final straw was when going through town at 30mph the #5 piston went and damaged internals and I finally lemon law my Challenger, 22svc calls in 24 months I was so pissed as I wanted to keep that car. The info you shared about the 5.7, and the 6.4HEMI ticking and I never heard, the motor just died. Dodge must have the worst quality control in history, I took back my $10k deposit on my '17 Hellcat and bought my Camaro ZL1.

Very good explanation of the tic problem, both. As a lifetime mechanic and gearhead, I cringe when they try to tell you to go 10k miles on the oil. Your 5k mile is ok but pushing it. Should go with 3k if you're serious about pushing the engine. Watch the pressure gauge. Some engines have lower pressure that's why I never use 0w anything! 5w30 regardless of what's called for.

Thanks for the informative video. I don't own a Challenger or any other current Mopar product but curious to know about the rest of the car. Do those cars have premature ball joint failure / suspension issues? What about sensor issues? I've owned many Mopar products in the past from 1995 all the way up to 2001 with my Prowler. Every one of them had premature ball joint failure including the Prowler (wheel popped off at 20,000 miles). 1999 Dakota R/T premature ball joint failure at 35,000 miles which was not covered under a recall because I had R/T name behind it. The Dodge lawyers settled with NHTSA and included all Dakotas except those with R/T even though ball joints are same with regular Dakota. Paint issues in the past with their water based clear coat falling off as well. Because of their track history from my perspective, I just don't feel like paying all the money out for a car that won't last. They look nice and would love to buy one, but I'm very skeptical. I still got my Prowler and will never part with it. Love that car. I also enjoy my MR2 Spyders and my Porsche as well. It would be nice for you to address other issues you have had personally with your car in another video. I'm still so tempted to buy one despite the bad experience I had with Dodge Headquarters in Michigan. When I was on the phone talking to them about having me pay the full price on replacement ball joint service despite their faulty ball joints (35,000) miles. Ball joints should typically last around 100,000 miles+. I was willing to pay a percentage because I did put miles on the vehicle. They refused. I said, "well I guess I'll buy a Toyota". Person said, "Go ahead, I don't care".

As a owner of a 2015 Charger Scat Pack with 96K miles there's 3 things that helped my 6.4L engine to keep it clean: 1 - Oil catch can (get this as soon you get the car, there's a lot of oil that gets back to the intake from the EGR) 2 - K&N air Filter (for those who got the car with no cold air intake) 3.- Engine Intake cleanup Service every 50K miles (I did mine at 80K, should done it sooner) As of now no Ticks, around 60-70k miles I rarely noticed knocking on cold idling but went away as the engine warms up it completely went gone as I got the intake cleaned and the spark plugs replaced around 80k miles. I kept the car with the scheduled oil changes with the dealer although the other recommended services such as differential oil change and Intake cleanups were done later as some of them are not cheap but as long you have your trusted mechanic they're totally worth it. People think new cars can run without maintenance and never want to spend a dime on them until they break, all of them need to be maintained. In my Family I've driven Fords, Chevy's, Honda's and Toyota's and all of them let us down the road, the two cars that I actually Owned: 2001 Chrysler 300M during the recession and my 2015 Charger after the recession and have never let me down the road, and I made sure to maintain them in good shape as I could.

Hi Racer X. Good info about the HEMI tick on the 5.7 liter HEMI V8 and 6.4 liter HEMI engines. I never knew the loose bolts on the exhaust manifold would create that sound as well. Based on info mentioned in this video and from other You Tube individuals, the prime culprits are the lifters. I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 liter V8 and that engine makes the same sound. Took off the valve cover and noticed one or two lifters worn and an area of the cam shaft worn as well. So, just like how the HEMI 5.7 and 6.4 V8 engines makes that sound, the same can be said for the 4.7 liter V8. The 4.7 liter V8 is no longer around. Chrysler discontinued it either after the 2009 or after the 2010 model year vehicles. At the time of existence the description for the 4.7 V8 was the 4.7 Power Tech V8. It's quite obvious it was a design flaw with the lifters for the three engines mentioned. Not enough lubrication for them. The engine engineering team probably fell asleep or was in la la land when making the lifters. Unfortunately, Chrysler didn't address this issue publicly about the design flaw. I'm sure by now the lifter issue is no longer a problem for Chrysler vehicles 2017 and newer. If it's no longer a problem these days Chrysler didn't say a word about it being resolved.

When I goto meets I cringe at what Dodge owners do.Pretty sure most finance and then do not have the money to maintain these--all while dogging them everywhere they go.I see many with bald or balding rear tires--not going to do a 4 second 60 with anything less then new tires and warm flat pavement.I also see many with the 392 putting normal gas in them instead of premium. One guy recently had no tag on the back--I thought it is because he street races--yeah he does that but said he has no tag cause he could not afford the tag and registration--I mean if you can not afford to own one and maintain it--and then not maintain it and dog an already spotty reliable car--folks are setting up for a disaster.I have an AWD StingerI own it--have dragged it--but I maintain it at the dealer--use premium gas and do not race evryone that comes to a stoplight--with AWD it hooks up so good that i can dust most cars off from a dig anyway.I was also paired with American V8s at the ast drag--have the videos and was fasster then 80% of them because they could not hook up--balding tires and sure some had regular fuel--then wonder why they run a 13 plus 1/4 mile and come nowhere near the magazine times.I beat the magazine time in my stinger--a 12.7--with no launch control.

Glad you touched up on this. Tony's Garage was saying it's lack of lubrication and a flaw in the design of the newer HEMI engine. Mabey the lack of lubrication is a result from sitting at idle. Oil changes and Idle times go hand in hand in this case. Do you oil regularly and don't let that HEMI sit idling!

I would send the oil to a lab and get it checked out. Are you highway driving or city? There is allot of variable factors there. If its HW, in a short period of time, then that's fine, that's usually what these companies are referencing in their labels. Nothing wrong with going 20K miles on 1 oil change if its all HW over a few months. If its city/HW and done over an entire year or more, that's bad IMO. I would change my oil every 4K-6K, maybe 8K tops if its a cheaper daily from a reliable brand. Oil is allot cheaper than an engine. 170K miles isn't allot of miles either. That's par for the course of any vehicle. Most modern cars should hit close to 200K. Most people run some garbage quick-lube oil in their cars and can hit 200K without an issue. Maybe talk about how your oil change interval is impressive at 300K-400K, then you might have a case to be made. At 300K-400K+ is where the legends are made. Shit, even 250K+ is a feat, because after 200K is whenever a car really becomes a problem.
@kkellerk23

@@ViolentMLG there is abundance of evidence on Amsoil reliability on internet. I've used it in all my vehicles including my Porsche Turbo without any issue. I've used the 15k or 25k oil change without issue, because they back the oil they sell as well as the data to prove it works from independent companies. I can't help if people don't believe what is being said or done. Just take a look for yourself and see if you want. I've gone down this road many time with folks who are stuck in their ways. I'm a tech and my wife is a Nuclear Engineer, so we both have done our research and came to the same conclusion, Amsoil was the best choice for us. And haven't been proven wrong yet. 🤷‍♂️ We went from Mobile1 to Amsoil years ago and haven't looked back since. The two I'm looking at are used and cost around 21K. That's actually cheaper than either of my Trans-Ams or Camaros when I got them. @@2fast4uates84 Wise man. Anyone who believes that engine oil can last 7,000+ miles is a fool. If you've ever changed oil that's over 3,000 miles, you know it does not look or feel like new, clean oil anymore and it cannot possibly be lubricating your engine well.

So would driving in sport mode help, since it turns off the MDS function? Or is it just the fact that it has those types of lifters, so it doesn't matter if the MDS is on or not?
@sinamon_scat8265
@sinamon_scat8265 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard it’s the function of the mds that causes the problem. Not sure if that’s true or not. I drive mine in sport most of the time anyway. Doesn’t seem to me that shutting of 4 cylinders would be healthy for the engine.

@@cobrajoe1974 I have been doing that too. But I'm curious if having those specific lifters is the cause of the issue, or if it is only an issue when MDS has been operating? Because if it is simply the lifters suck, then I guess there is no point in always remembering to switch to sport mode. But if turning off MDS is the "fix", then I will just make sure I switch modes.

It’s not an MDS issue, it’s the lifter design issue. Running in sport only keeps it out of MDS but won’t prevent failure.

Uncle Tony from Uncle Tonys Garage actually posted a couple of videos about this issue. He had the 5.7 engine block stripped down and showed why this failure occurs. It looks like a design flaw with the angle of how the lifters are actually seated in the block. There's an oil deficiency issue. He actually make a very good case. I recommend watching his videos.

@@RacerX9 I took it to 2 different dealers.. both told me it was the lifters. Had 15k miles, on time oil changes, didn’t idle long. Just unlucky I guess. They replaced the lifters under warranty, but I wasn’t going to keep that lifter eating 5.7 long term. So I traded. Scatpack at 12k miles so far so good 🤙🏼

I’ve got a 2004 Ram Rumble Bee and the engine has had the Hemi tick for the last 10 years and I’ve had 2 different short blocks in it and used the same heads on both. On the second short block I had the head milled, ported and polished and used all 6.1 top end parts and a Comp 260 in both. Still have the tick to this day with zero negative effects, and that’s usually the case. As he said the intake manifold bolts like to back out. If your cowl seal is bad and water pools on your intake, when you start you engine it could suck that water in through that gap and vapor lock your engine and you’re going to have a bad time and since liquid won’t compress something has to give. When using headers I’ve found that using factory gaskets prevents the exhaust leak, learned that one the hard way! As for the MDS, I don’t have any experience with it. Try using Redline 5w30, a lot of people have had great luck with it as far as almost if not completely silencing the tick. Mopar lifters are cheaply made and just suck half the time. Some people have used Crower lifters and that eliminates the tick, they’re pricey though! Sorry wasn’t trying to steal the spotlight, just throwing my own personal experience out there for others also. Great video man and nice car! Keep them coming!
