Thanks. It made a big difference over the 10ft run. 1/8 inch per foot is an inch and a quarter over 10 feet. So it was important to find a way to level the whole thing.

Great setup. I'm building a similar system. What size PVC did you use? On the water into the rails you used a drip manifold. How is that connected to the PVC T? Looks like it is screwed in to the T? Please provide sizes or part. Thanks for your help.

Hi P and S! I'm trying to grow my own aquaponic system for a class project, but I'm struggling with determining how much to feed them for optimal plant growth. For my study I'm growing 9 freckles romaine lettuce in an NFT system, but I'm struggling to figure out how many fish I need, and how much fish feed to give them so that they excrete enough waste. Any info on this could help!

Excellent system man. I am going to replicate this exact system. Thanks for all the ideas. Do you have some resource regarding the type of nutrient to put in and what all plants can we grow in this system? Some book or some pdf files?

Just keep in mind the PH and nutrients would be same for all the plants. So pick the plants for the system based on similar requirements.

Curious if you are still using this system and if so, maybe you could do a short follow up video showing how you handles the bottom 2 pipes as well as any modifications you have made over time. I’m building a similar system right now.

Hi. thanks for the comment. The system worked well. I did end up replacing the system with 4 inch solid pvc pipes. The ones here are not ideal for growing and they started to bow a little when the plants grew. This system is good for the smaller plants such as lettuce with tomatoes it was hard to get the branches up. I ended up building another system that I will try to get posted. :)

I believe you are referring to the small black pipe to each of the grow tubes. It is drip irrigation line. Available at most gardening centers

6" pipe can be ordered from the box stores. Lowes/Home Depot/etc. Just be sure the NOT use sewer line (I swapped these out on the build later on)

Where did you get the 6" corrugated solid pipe? I can find the 3 inch and the 4 inch but not the 6". I want to use the HDPE lined pipe too because PVC is poisonous! Good job by the way.

What is the small white item on the frame behind the and to the right of the water storage? Also what size is your flex hose? Thanks

3/4 flex hose. The small white unit you are referring to is a small marine air bubbler. This provides additional oxygen to the water.

you should keep your biggest plants up top where they get the most light. they need it more.

I went the other way as larger plants can spread out on the bottom. The top being smaller provide less overall shade to the plants underneath.

hello! i just built a similar hydroponic system where the pipes are level and has a constant level of water -- did you run into any issues of the roots not getting enough oxygen/are too submerged in water? where does the water level hit your net pot? thank you!

No. Oxygenating the water happens 2 ways. 1. With the use of the bubler. 2. With the pressure control return that allows water to immediately return and splash into the tank. the second black hose coming off of the front supply line. Bottom 1/4 of net pots are in the water. But you can put them deeper and it is not an issue. Roots will not rot as long as the water is well oxygenated.

Why didn't you choose a "snake"-style layout from top to bottom? Would have been a lot less material I think?

Several reasons. One I wanted to be able to control slope which I wouldn't be able to do on a snake system at least not in a way I could adjust on the fly when the system is moved into the garage for winter growing. The second was that I wanted to be able to control water flow based on the needs of each row of plants. The last was I felt the plants at the end of snake would have less oxygen saturated water. As for material it would have actually ended up being more as each row would have to connect to the other. Also cost for 4" elbows are higher and you would need 2 for each side of the rows. (except the top row and bottom where it would be needed for 1 side).

Is your question how will you flush the system completely? Changes are done by removing most of the water via the drain valve. Then fill water and add more nutients. Please clarify your question if this doesn't answer it.

P and S yes that ia the question ...but i do not see any drain valve as ...there will be some water level.mainfained in pipe so i assume u have to remove end cap completly ...abd it depends if its not glued ...please clarify.Thanks

Urban D I dont remove all the water. Its not required. The amount left in the tubes is a safety thing too. If the pump dies or electricity fails if roots are completely dry they die quickly. Having water retained allows for more survival time. Hope that helps. FYI you vould also use screw end caps so you could remove it all. I haven't found that necessary.

P and S Ok Thanks and agree with all of your points ...but when nutrient completly flows for 2 weeks say it become imbalanced and i usually change it completly and for that purpose complete drain is required...my query was with that reference.

Thats less than 200gph. I am using a 550gph pump. There is a return valve that lets you control pressure. So you should be fine with that size.

I goal was to keep them relatively level. The exits are almost centered on the end of the tube so that it is even throughout. Since the water flows in only on one end it creates a flow to the other side.

Its easy. Open the end valve and drain. Mine went to a hose bib that I could use to water regular plants.

about a foot and a half. But it can be varied based on what you plan to grow.

I have both 6 and 9 and 12 inch between holes. All depends on density and what you want to grow. I did find on the 6" that I was skipping holes. So I tend to use the 6" for the smaller plants. The beauty is that you can move them around as you want.

Has anybody grown like this ever had the roots from the plants get too massive, as to where they slow the flow of the water, and cause the water to rise up too high and leak out, leaving the res almost empty the next day? I considered an overflow/drain, but the problem is still that not enough fresh water is flowing through the pipes... I have tried everything except for trimming the roots, as they are the size the plants need them to be, but if I have to trim them I have to, that is the last thing I want to have to do.. Oh yeah, I flood them for 15 mins every 2 hours, and I leveled out all 4 of my 10' four inch pvc pipes, now I know I should have raised the first, and went lower as I go along, so gravity helps the flow... Any tips or suggestions?

Hi. you are doing a flood and drain. This will cause an increase in roots as they grow to seek out water and nutrients. This build is a constant flow system. As long as you have good aeration your roots will be healthy and not grow massive to cause issues. Hope that helps.

@@1aday2008 Well I found a temp fix, I got an intermittent timer, and I measured how long it takes the pipes to start leaking around the netpots, and that is 1:11, so I have the pump on every 5 minutes and let it run for 50 seconds, so far I am not losing costly nutrients every time the pump comes on.. Next year I'll go 6" pipes, at least for the zucchini and squash for sure. And I'll make sure to raise the first part of the system above the other pipes, and have them go lower till they reach the end/drain, that way gravity is on my side as well.

I may be wrong, but it appears that the pipe you have chosen is not for potable water use. It is drain pipe and thus is not chemically safe for use for growing food. Safe PVC needs to be used.

You are correct. This was addressed in previous comments and replaced. The pipe in the video also sags easier.

24 hrs a day pump. Might be costly in electricity bills

This is the pump used for this build. amzn.to/2H1IHtz It uses 33 watts per hour. In a day it uses 792 watts. For me that works out to 15cents a day. The yield I get for that is enormous. Last season we were picking an entire grocery bag of cucumbers everyday. We were giving food away. All said and done I have figured it costs me about a dollar a day for 50 plants.

You can use a timer for the system to reduce the electric cost.
