Excellent video! Love the sensors and controller box. But watch the ph probes. I owned an electroplating shop for 27 years and always had to change them frequently. They build up lots of crud on the glass electrode and they give false readings.

Barbod, I first want to say what you have built is truly extraordinary. It takes up a pretty small footprint, allows for easy access to everything, and all the information stored in a database that can be accessed for all information analysis. Thank you so much for sharing your endeavor with us. One of the things I wanted to point out that can easily be corrected in your set up is the algae. Algae needs light to grow so the hydroponic builders I've been studying (along with my own practices) have minimized the amount of light entering all access points on their system. Putting a cover on your reservoir, and only opening holes for the drain, the probes, and the pumps and then securing those entry points with grommets or something similar would decrease the amount of light entering your system immensely. In addition, each one of the holes for the net pots are allowing a significant amount of light into your system. One solution to remedy this is to add hydroton (which is reusable) to the bottom of your net pots to accommodate the rockwool cubes and fill in the space to block out light . Another solution would be to buy larger rockwool cubes that actually take up a larger amount of the net pot to block out the light. I really hope this helps. A system as efficient as what you have created should not be so susceptible to something so simple to control as algae. Have fun growing!!! I'm having fun. Another thing to consider is the opacity of the pvc tubing you are using. Depending on the amount of opacity, it could be allowing enough light to also grow algae.

As this is an older video, I'm sure someone has already made the suggestion I'd make..get some hydroton (expanded clay pebbles) Use it in the net pots (on the sides and top of your Rockwood cubes) Its a great benefit in a few ways, it gives an almost "soil like" structure surrounding your cubes, while also creating a healthier root zone with no algea growth and more lateral rooting. (if the cubes are exposed to light all roots. Will grow only downward..covering will expand your rooting area (it makes a difference!) ..Awesome build, helped me work out a few kinks on a new idea..I like your feeder line taps, and think I may replicate how you tied them in..very nice Thank you

I think Hydroton in your net pots will reduce the amount of light getting to your nutrient solution, since you stated you have a lid. Very nice setup. Only negative I see is you are limited to what you can grow in the solution to whatever that one nutrient solution provides. I had a system with 4 horizontal pvc pipes into one solution and experimented with different type plants and decided to separate my pipes and use 4 different reservoir / pump systems so I can grow different produce. for example, tomatoes had calcium deficiencies, my peppers didn't get very big at all and cucumbers looked sickly. but other plants were great. This way I can grow a better variety.
@veger2001
@veger2001 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with Grant Myers, this system is great for types of plant that use the same nutrition. example: you can put Hot peppers and tomatoes together as they both need lots of calcium magnesium ( cal-mag). I would have another system like this for lettuce and a like.. and so on... Nice system I like your sensor system ..pretty cool :) Other thing is water flow, your flow should be on a timer.. some plants can live in water others need to dry out for about 45 min or so.. so 15min on and 45 off.. this depends on the plant which brings me back to my other point :)

Goes all out on the monitoring, cheaps out on the PVC and water reservoir setup lol. With some refinement, this setup could be an amazing setup. I plan to work on building a modular hydroponic indoor setup for vegetable and greens growing that is efficient, mostly automated (I would love full automation but want to keep costs down per module), and cheap. PVC is probably going to be the way to go. What I am debating on is whether to make the entire system 12V DC based or 110V AC based. There are a lot of 12V DC water pump options that are also cheap. All the control stuff can either be run off 12V DC or be run with an inverter or converter. As for the DC source, used server power supplies can provide massive amounts of clean 12V DC for pretty cheap. I might go with the 12V DC option for many reasons even if it complicates some things.

Hey Barbod, Great setup. I recently built a similar system using nothing but youtube (videos like yours) for guidance. I think limiting the amount of light into the water will reduce the algae. Try using hydroton or some other media in the netpots. I'm interested in remote sensors and control via Arduino. Can attach link for Arduino instructions? Or if time permits create a how to video? Thanks

I wish I could get my hands on some Peracetic acid instead. The pump is a "Resun MD 55 Magnetic/Magnet Drive Pumps". the Maximum Head Lift (Hmax) is the key number to watch for. This one is has a 6M Hmax. As to schematic: I built and added parts as I needed. Putting a schematic together would be another project. :-)

What height do you like to have the water at and why? That is really cool to have different heights like that.

Hi Mathew, I usually raise the level of the water when I put new seeds so that the bottom of the pods touch the water. Once plant have established their root system, I lower the water level.

hi dear Barbod .great set up and nice explanation. I am in a place where this system is new and there is not places where you get hydroponic supplements .I was wondering if it would be ok to use normal soil purpose fertilizer as a neutrants solution and also green house seeds . would you please advise . Thanks and good luck.

@barbodvarjavandi9228

+Tyrone Buckland Very much so. I have a few solar panels (enough for the electronics) and have already build a controller for it. all I need now are some affordable batteries :-). I do not have enough solar panels to to generate power for the circulating pomp and Air pomp.

The little grommet that you are using for the outgoing water against the 4" pipe, what is that? How did you make that connection without leaks?

+Ritchie Johnson I made a hole (approx. 1”) at the bottom of the 4” pipe, then I put/threaded item 1 (inside the 4” tube) and 2 (bottom outside side the 4” pipe) together using rubber gasket to stop any leaks. item 1: Adapter with 3/4" Male Thread and 3/4-Inch PVC Pipe Glue Connection Item 2: 90 degree 3/4" Slip - NTP Female I hope this helps

I made a hole in the 4"PVC, then I used 2 PVC adapters, one Female slip to Female threaded and one Female slip to male threaded and joined them through the hole. to stop it from leaking, I made some washers using 1/8 Silicone Rubber Sheeting.

As I design my system framework, I was curious if you feel the water flow control line for each tube plus the water height adjustment tube attachment at the drain exit is redundant. Do you really need both? Seems the water height adjustment tube attachment at each tube's drain exit is a clever idea. Why not have the tubes drain down to the next level tube (filling back and forth) instead of all of the tubes draining directly to the recycling pump/tub.

Here is the reason for why I did it that way: I do not plant all rows at the same time., for example, I start one row of lettuce per week. When I start the seedling in one row, I need the water to be higher, but as they grow, I lower the water level. The need for having a valve on each row is that I can close one row when it is not in use or when I need to clean one row after harvest. I hope this helps

They are level so that I can have a unified level of water throughout the tubes. I control the depth of the water using the 8 inch cut off tubes. I would say this is a NFT and DWC hybrid. here is a very good article to describe the difference between NFT and DWC systems www.fao.org/3/a-az028e.pdf
