The caller is a terrible person, if they had paid back $100 per month this loan would’ve been paid in full in less than the 10 years it’s been. Showing that they had ZERO intention of ever paying back the loan, and even worse wanted to shift the blame onto their family for asking for the money back… WOW.

I owed my ex father in law 2k for help when my ex and I bought a house. That debt bothered me for a long time. even after I ended up getting divorced and filing bankruptcy it bothered me. Well about 5 years later I was able to scrape up the money and paid him back with interest. It was the correct and moral thing to do. I felt better about myself and was able to sleep better so to speak. Even though we rarely saw eye to eye he accepted it graciously!

I didn't get a sense that it was completely clear that they were to pay them back.....which is a problem. There should be clarity as to whether the money is a gift or a loan before the money changes hands. I remembered when I was saving up for my first house my Sister/Bro-in-Law offered to lend me money for a down payment I thanked them and politely declined their offer. I would have paid them back certainly, but I don't like borrowing money from family. It's not worth it.

Not true at all. The caller said why... The in laws are very clingy. They want to follow the couple across the country and move into the same town. The inlaws have serious boundary issues. I have a friend who's wife's family has boundary issues. Adding to the problem is the wife's mother is a hardcore bible thumper and very very image conscious. She is also a ripping gossip. Anyway, during the construction of their new home, the in laws were there every day. After they moved in, during the decorating phase, mother in law basically decorated or at least tried to decorate the house the way SHE wanted it. My buddy had a heart to heart with his new wife. A decision was made. So the in laws made their daily run to the house and just like always, no knock or ring, just walk in. My buddy and his wife sit them down an tell them , they need their privacy and space. That there would be no more "just walking in"...And, if they wanted to come over, they had to call first. No more of this 'just coming by'....Naturally the in laws got very offended and protested......In laws took a LONG break. In the end it was healthy for the relationship. It all worked out.

that happens when you have no clear understanding. "Pay it when you can" means different things for different people. I was in debt to my great grandma for 3k when I was 18. She helped me buy a car since I needed one for college and told me to pay her back when it was convenient. It took a year to pay her off (I had serious health issues that year) but I just walked in with a check and surprised her one day when I came back from college on summer break. She never expected it back (which i didn't know) but she was very appreciative that I did that despite how difficult my year had been. Now compare that to my brother who has had a 3 year debt of 7k and refuses to make monthly payments to my great grandma. Pay off your family guys. Keep them updated about your personal situation and when to expect money as well. Makes them feel appreciated and helps to steady a relationship that is strained with debt.

My daughter is a motivated hard working adult. She fell into a hard financial situation. I won’t go into detail but a lot of things contributed. She was mortified to have to ask me for help. I have plenty of resources and there is no way I’m going to sit back and watch her and her family struggle. I told her she is going to get my money someday anyway and now I get to see some of it helping them while I’m still here. And guess what, now her and my son in law are back on their feet. My help made a difference. Gives me much joy.

anthony says: loans within the family are worse that owing the bank money, because it creates drama. Caller giggles "knowingly". Same caller: In-laws gave us the money 10 years ago, saw us getting jobs, buying homes and fancy new cars - and we did not even try to pay back, nor did we ever bring up the issue. Same caller: We do not want them to move into the same _town._ (but she is comfortable having and not returning their money, she just can't stand to have them nearby). Now the in laws may be unpleasant or overbearing. She calls them easily "offended". Well not when it came to money, it clearly is the first time they asked for getting the money back.

Parents’ side here. With that much debt, Sarah and hubby should have bought a less expensive used car rather than a new car with interest and a payment. They did not treat her in-laws with much respect or appreciation. Things would have been much better had they chose to pay the family rather than choose ALL that other stuff over them. It is offensive to repeatedly choose whatever was chosen when racking up the CC debt. I choose a vacation rather than pay you. I choose shoes I don’t need rather than you. I choose new (whatever) rather than you. There will be much less offense when the debt is paid.

I love how family calls crying for cash. you give them a loan, and then they try to stiff you! No regard for you or your well being. They burrowed FOR A VACATION!!! Took forever to get the cash back. Had to threaten court.

I guarantee you that she isn`t going to pay them back a dime. She was just looking for someone else to agree that she didn`t owe them anything and didn`t find it here.

This call really took a turn as it went on. At first I thought the in laws seemed super petty in trying to punish them to get their way. But as it went along and you factor that they’ve had ten years to pay it back and haven’t done so and that the way they offended them was telling them they didn’t want them to live in the same city as them was definitely a whiplash. I’d be offended too if you were happy to take my $10,000, wait ten years to not pay it back to me nor have any sense of urgency to pay it to me but then tell me I can’t live in the same city as you. Not next door to you the same city for god sake. Wowza

I don’t believe for one second that her in-laws are now trying to punish them. Even without setting a payback time ten years is way too long to not even begin to pay them back. The in-laws are not the bad guys here.

to me they all seem fishy. The in-laws didn't ask for the money until they were "not allowed" to move with them and they simply ignored the loan because no one asked to this point. The issue though is, legally they do not have to pay the loan because the in-laws have no papers related to the loan. On the other hand, in-laws can move wherever they please, they do not need anyone's permission. Personally, I see a divorce in the future. Unless of course the husband works 70+ hours a week and has no time for the fights so he stays out.

I do not think the caller was talking about her parents, regardless, I have witnessed parents being neighbors or living in the same neighborhood as their son or daughters family’s - and both times, grandparents became every intrusive and manipulative. Please understand I’m in no way taking the callers side. She is very winey and selfish. They should pay the parents back.

@whymustyoutestme..2130 - bingo🎯 . This caller also needs understand too that open the door to no boundaries and manipulation when mommy and daddy in law are paying so much for them. Nonetheless, this caller is extremely entitled and needs to stop using other people's money that she doesn't really like. She creates this cycle. She also needs to take care of herself and stop taking her husbands medical career as also something she did. Just take care of yourself and stop using other people, period. Then twisting words to make it seem as if thus was not a loan! Its a "pattern of behavior" that the rest of us have noticed..
