sailors used to think it was bad luck to have a women on a ship so if a women was found onboard they would throw her into the sea and leave her to drown they believed that the women who they threw into to sea became mermaids seeking out sailors so they could pull them into the ocean and drown them
@user-bx9ib2br6h8 жыл бұрын
+stacey rain It was bad luck because they were considered a distraction on working vessels, especially military. Ironic really considering the female figureheads and names for ships.

+Runnasuia ismael most of the time, women weren't allowed on board because they believed the ship would get jealous and punish the crew (usually by going into a storm). Hence the female names and figure heads of the ships, the ships were considered women, or at least to have the spirit of a woman.

i was told it was because of the inconvenient and cumbersome clothes that women of that former era would wear (be forced to wear by convention) with those clothes, a dangerous sailing ship would be even more dangerous. I was also told that women would serve a lot more than the history books would say, including soldiers in the American civil war, as well as sailing ships.

+Ned Mccarthy in the odyssey odessious runs into sirens that are called harpies he tied himself to the ship and heard the song they sang and was tempted to go with them. Instead of sinking the ship they fly away with you.
@RandomGerman80087 жыл бұрын
Ned MCCarthy+ I don't know where you are getting your facts sir, but sirens were half fish half human creatures just like mermaids if seen from afar. It was only when sailors got up close, usually as their ships were being smashed up against the rocks, were they seen for what they were. More fish than woman. Like the creatures seen from the documentary "mermaid the body found." More likely they found a siren instead. As for your half bird girls, they were greek and roman folklore creatures called harpies. The seal girls were scottish folklore creatures known as selkies.
@LoudMcCloud7 жыл бұрын
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siren_%28mythology%29 . In Euripides' play, Helen (167), Helen in her anguish calls upon "Winged maidens, daughters of the Earth." Although they lured mariners, the Greeks portrayed the Sirens in their "meadow starred with flowers" and not as sea deities. Roman writers linked the Sirens more closely to the sea, as daughters of Phorcys.[5] Sirens are found in many Greek stories, notably in Homer's Odyssey. Sirens were believed to combine women and birds in various ways. In early Greek art, Sirens were represented as birds with large women's heads, bird feathers and scaly feet. Later, they were represented as female figures with the legs of birds, with or without wings, playing a variety of musical instruments, especially harps. The 10th-century Byzantine encyclopedia Suda[18] says that from their chests up Sirens had the form of sparrows, below they were women, or, alternatively, that they were little birds with women's faces. Birds were chosen because of their beautiful voices. Later Sirens were sometimes depicted as beautiful women, whose bodies, not only their voices, are seductive. The Early Christian euhemerist interpretation of mythologized human beings received a long-lasting boost from Isidore's Etymologiae.[27] "They [the Greeks] imagine that 'there were three Sirens, part virgins, part birds,' with wings and claws. 'One of them sang, another played the flute, the third the lyre. They drew sailors, decoyed by song, to shipwreck. According to the truth, however, they were prostitutes who led travelers down to poverty and were said to impose shipwreck on them.' They had wings and claws because Love flies and wounds. They are said to have stayed in the waves because a wave created Venus."

Upon one summer’s morning, I carefully did stray, Down by the Walls of Wapping, where I met a sailor gay, Conversing with a young las, who seem’d to be in pain, Saying, "William, when you go with you, you will ne’er return again". My heart is pierced by Cupid, I disdain all glittering gold, There is nothing can console me but my jolly sailor bold. His hair it does in ringlets, his eyes as black as cole, My happiness attend him wherever he may go, From Tower Hill, down to Blackwall, I wander, weep and moan, All for my jolly sailor, until he sails home. My heart is pierced by Cupid, I disdain all glittering gold, There is nothing can console me but my jolly sailor bold. My father is a merchant - the truth I now will tell, And in great London City in opulence doth dwell, His fortune doth exceed three-hundred thousand gold, And he frowns upon his daughter, who loves a sailor bold. A fig for his riches, his merchandise, and gold, True love is grafted my heart; give me my sailor bold: My heart is pierced by Cupid, I disdain all glittering gold, There is nothing can console me but my jolly sailor bold. Should he return in poverty, from o’er the ocean far, To my tender bosom, I’ll press my jolly tar. My sailor is as smiling as the pleasant month of May, And often we have wandered through Ratcliffe Highway, And here a pretty blooming young girl we happy did behold, Reclining on the bosom of her jolly sailor bold. My heart is pierced by Cupid, I disdain all glittering gold, There is nothing can console me but my jolly sailor bold. My name it is Maria, a merchant’s daughter fair, And I have left my parents and three thousand pounds a year, Come all you pretty fair maids, whoever you may be Who love a jolly sailor that ploughs the raging sea. While up aloft, in storm, from me his absence mourn, And firmly pray, arrive the day, he never more to roam. My heart is pierced by Cupid, I disdain all glittering gold, There is nothing can console me but my jolly sailor bold. My heart is pierced by Cupid, I disdain all glittering gold, There is nothing can console me but my jolly sailor bold.

So I don't know if this was intentional, but the fact that you have no music in the background somehow makes this better. Also, the low-ish quality of the microphone and echo (was that intentional?) makes it awesome. It makes it feel like a lone mermaid in a cave singing or something.

Clawy - Roblox & More! The ones shown in the movie that sung this song were sirens. There’s a huge difference. Mermaids are considered more pure and only accidentally drown men they fall in love with. Most of the time they don’t get that the men can’t breathe underwater. Sirens have hypnotizing voices and deceiving beautiful faces they use to hypnotize men before dragging them under the water and eating their bodies and souls.
@DiosaDelOscura5 жыл бұрын
@@mychemicalromancewillpierc5241 Actually, sirens are originally half bird half woman. They hypnotize sailors with their voice and then eat them. Mermaids just sing and drown them. People kept confusing them over the years.

Mermaids drown Sailors and Pirates, they are considered more pure. As Sirens sing songs that you could say cast a spell on men, making them tip over the edge of ships and then eat their bodies and souls. Sirens will not just go near land unless it is needed, they also do not typically go out during the day, it's like going towards your death sentence. Though Sirens can trance a man's mind, there are objects that can be enchanted and a man can hold that on him to keep him from being tranced by the Siren's Song. Source: I am fascinated with Merfolk Mythology
@HinaLuvSasu228 жыл бұрын
Stormie Stilettos Actually Sirens are not merfolk at all. In Greek mythology mermaids were half-fish. half-women creatures that were thought to mingle with humans and have children with them, like the Greek hero Achilles. Granted, mermaids legends can be traced back farther then Ancient Greece but that is the more common time where people know of them. Mermaids were known for being beautiful but not known for their singing or even killing sailors but there is probably some tales of that. Sirens on the other hand, according the Greek mythology, were not fish at all. They were half-women, half-bird like creatures that were known for their enchanting singing but not for their looks. They were sing and cause ships to crash on the shore and kill those on the ship as prey. Siren are described as talons, wings with feathers and beaks and mostly bodies of a bird with a head of a woman. Though sometimes they could be shown with the upper body of a woman as well. (For more information visit knowledgenuts.com/2014/02/05/the-difference-between-mermaids-and-sirens/) And the mermaids in the video are more 'realistic' then Ariel was. Ariel is a watered down and sweet vision of the mermaid and was loosely based off the novel "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Anderson. I say loosely because a lot is different from the novel when looking at the Disney movie but that can be expected when the tale was made kid friendly. I'm not sure when Siren and Mermaids became one and the same but according to the mythology they were very different and only similar being that they were women and both close to the sea/ocean.
@randomuser57848 жыл бұрын

C'mere kids and let me clear this whole mermaid/siren thing up Siren= bird ladies from Greek mythology that tempted sailors with promises of what the sailors want most Mermaid= fish ladies from Celtic mythology that distracted sailors with music and then drowned them when they got too close

You are not fully right with both. But k.

I've been listening to this for years now and I still can't fathom the perfection of your voice and singing style. You gotta be a mermaid. There's no other explanation.

i sERIOUSLY feel dizzy and enchanted by this. totally would fall for a mermaid with this voice i am a dead pirate

The only scene I like about Pirates of the Caribbean.Many movies have " Femme Fatale" theme but this is one of several that actually nailed it. Chills to even look at the actress and imagine manipulation. Brrr
@yuukikisaragi10898 жыл бұрын
Okay, not to be rude but it bugs me so two things: 1. Pirates of the Caribbean 2. Femme Fatale. By chance, are you French? Because that would explain why you said 'Fam' instead of 'Femme'.
@blacklight47208 жыл бұрын
Yuuki Kisaragi Nope I'm not french. Simply moment of ignorance on my part =] . Thank you for correcting.

For all the Americans, The places mentioned are in East London, the same place jack the ripper was from and near where the Olympics was, they still exist. There is also a famous Blackwall tunnel. Tower Hill is in Tower Hamlets and has a train station too.

I guess it’s more of a deceitful song. Like it kinda gives me the vibes that she saw the sailor and had an flirty talk with him and she wants to be with him because he might never return when he leaves, so she wants to keep him with her... in the sea 🌊 Just me though.

If you really love a sailor you realize that roaming over the sea is who they are and you accept that. It’s the same concept that inspired the Little Mermaid tale I am told.
