ProGrade Digital Dual-Slot UHS-II SDXC USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C Card Reader: bhpho.to/31pZUpX
I've had the Kingston USB 3.0 High-Speed Media Reader for so long I can't remember what I used before that. Coming in at only $18 it has served me well until recently. It has been a Top Seller on B&H for years so I know many of you have it.
The newer SD cards I use now have two rows of pins for increased speed, recently one of my SanDisk cards had one of the thin plastic separators on the back fall off, I didn't think to much of it until I noticed that my Sony a7Riii would not allow the card to seat all the way in the camera. The cards I use cost way more than the Kingston reader. I noticed that when I insert the cards in the reader it feels a bit rough. I had a friend come over and give me some drone footage and his SD card also had a plastic piece come off. Now I was thinking it was my card reader ruining cards.
So I replaced it with a reader that is 4 times the cost. The speed of off loading my cards is the same, however when I insert the cards in the new ProGrade Reader it feels much smoother.Besides not ruining my expensive cards, I was willing to pay more for the following reasons. The biggest is I can off load two SD cards at the same fast speed at the same time. The Kingston showed up as 4 drives on my Windows computer while the ProGrade only shows up as one which is less confusing. Also it has a nice magnet on the bottom so I don't have to Velcro it in to place. And the last reason is when using the fast cards with two rows of pins about 20% of the time when I would insert the card it wouldn't blaze at 250MB/s it would be cut to 45MB/s because I think only one row was making contact.

The contacts inside the reader are just little copper spider legs that have a slightly curled tip on them to allow the card to slip underneath. What can happen is the copper leg can get bent and then it's just some twisted metal that scrapes over your card every time you put it in. I had it happen on a card reader I was using for my 3D printing. In my case the card reader contacts all got crushed down into the reader so my cards were fine (the reader was destroyed.) In your case it sounds like they're just bent sideways or something. So when the card goes in you can feel them crunching over it and clearly one of them is catching on the plastic dividers and ripping them off.

Wow, if it can damage an SD card with a single use then that's serious. Thanks for letting us know. Some of those UHS-II cards (with two rows of pins) are getting very expensive now, especially for the super fast video capable cards.

If anyone has the same problem you can get SD to CF adapters very cheaply and use the CF slot. Just a thought.

I had 1 lexar card chewed up the same way with a kingston card reader shaped like a usb stick and never knew it was the card reader's fault! Ended up loosing that card reader, purchase a new one and everything is fine again

I have the same Kingston Card reader, no issues so far, but that's for highlighting this issue you have experienced. I would try taking it apart to see if some sort of foreign object has got in to that slot, or the contacts have become bent or similar.

$80 for a card reader, means about $100 in Poland. Thanks, but I will try to find cheaper and safe, it's just a card reader ;)

If the kingston useless, a tear down would not hurt... unless you use other formats with it...

So your reader is out of order. Because it is old and often used. What did you expect with the new one? It will stay forever without any fault? Sorry, not worth to talk about on KZfaq in that way. I have the same Kingston reader. I know some day it will bite the dust, so what? That's life...

Interesting failure. I had an Acer laptop from school a few years ago and it electrically fried one of my cards after I finished a shoot and was transferring my footage. Never felt more helpless.

SD cards are not magnetic media like floppy disks. Magnets should have no effect on them.

I had a similar problem with a reader and bought this one... www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1337340-REG/sony_mrw_s1_sd_uhs_ii_usb_reader_writer.html/reviews#customerReview ... since my cards are less demanding. The cards I use transfer at ~ 95 MBps.
