Hi Docs I've never had the knee scoped but for many years i had the cortisone shots and the gel shots and I ended up over many years of pain I had both knees replaced one in August of 2021 and the other in December 2021 and it's the hardest painful surgery I ever had but now I'm out of that constant arthritis pain and the healing is still going on but oh so much better and it is the best decision I've made👍🤗 Love you both and seeing your videos and your faces and love your humor as it makes my day and please have a very Happy Easter 🐇 with your families. Two things I remember about my recovery after getting my knee scoped to remove a floating body and clean up some frayed ligaments and roughened meniscus. The first was that I was surprised that the very next day, I could walk on it without even a limp, and no pain if I took ibuprofen (and only minor pain if I didn't). But the other thing I remember is that it must've taken at least 3 months or so before I could walk on it continually for anything longer than about 20 minutes without getting sore. But after getting past that, since the surgery over 10 yrs. ago, I've been hiking with a small backpack most weekends of the year doing wildlife photography, up and down very steep mountains. I will occasionally get some swelling and soreness, but usually not even bad enough to take NSAIDs, and never bad enough to limp. BTW, shout out to my surgeon, Johnathan Perry in Tri-Cities WA.

Hello docs had a knee scope done lower 40s . The doc did a meniscus repair . My doc said my cartilage was shot so he did the shock fracture and had some arthritis going on . still had pain afterwards . He said I qualified for a knee Replacement . I Said no thank you I think I Would have worn it out to quickly for the line of work I was in. Now my knee sounds like velcro ripping quietly when I extend my leg. I think I need to play spin the limb to pick what to get fixed first LOL. Thank y'all For the great topics you all choose to do videos on !!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the reassuring video. That’s exactly what happened to me. I thought arthroscopy would have me back exercising comfortably but I was actually worse. With lots of physio & a steroid injection everything improved to a point. Next option was hyaluronic acid injection & continued with physio exercises & slowly increasing walking & cycling .Now I’m back doing the majority of things I love to do like walking hiking & cycling & swimming within reason & continue to do the physio maintenance exercises. One year later & im very happy.

I had my arthroscopy about 7 years ago as I could not straighten my knee. My surgeon went in thinking it was a meniscal tear but I had OA, synovitis and calcinosis. Mine was a success and would recommend it. The pain afterwards was a little off the charts, but that only lasted a few days and I worked on my ROM as soon as the next day to get my knee back going again. Would recommend. Great video x

I'm 3 weeks post arthroscopy and I experienced almost no real pain or swelling after the surgery. I didn't need to take the prescribed pain medication or use crutches. I had the partial meniscectomy procedure, so maybe that's why I am doing well. From what I've heard, meniscus repair and removal are worse. I have full bending of my leg.

I injured my knee 10 wks ago. Still painful. X-ray shows no fracture of significant arthritis. MRI shows complex radial medial meniscus tear, bruise bone , loose bodies & a Baker's cyst. Very frustrating. Agewise my Ortho wants not to rush into surgery and try other avenues, like PT & he mentioned cortisone shots. He said my knee is a MESS!( His words). Seems no end to this nightmare. No easy fix, really. I asked him if he thought I would have to have a knee replacement and he said it was possible. The pain never totally leaves. Good video.

Hi Docs. It's not fun having trouble with your knees. Cortisone shots are the worse. It does help for a short time but once it wears off HOLY CRAP!!!! The way you two explain is very helpful. My knee doctor talks in medical term and do not understand what he is talking about. I have told time and time again that I never went to medical school and now I just go with it. I will say "WOW is that right". The only reason I go to him is because he is supposed to be the best at what he does. Man, why do I always ramble. Excellent advice. I had 70% of the medial meniscus removed from both knees due to tears 5 years ago. I was told I could start running again 6 weeks later. That was way too soon. It was 8 months before I had full range of motion, and zero pain. Now, I'm running 3-7 miles a day, but I think you are right about arthritis. At 54 years old, the knees are achy the day after a long run, but the occasional Aleve works wonders. At some point I'll have to give it up, but not yet!

I was told not to use topical anti inflammatory creams as I have Ulcerative Colitis. Im on Azathioprine (non-steroid anti inflammatory pills for that). Getting physio exercises for left knee swelling/pain. CT showed degenerative meniscus. Therapist feels that’s not causing the pain and swelling. She feels the large muscle that holds the patella in position is causing patella to move from side to side in the groove of knee. Hoping this helps! Either way, I’ve got this issue for life. Still significantly inflamed and painful with some difficulty walking but with some noticeable improvement. Taking prescribed anti-inflammatories plus OTC meds and PT twice a week. We won't count how many scopes I have had, the last go around included a lateral release for both knees. I was in my late twenties though my 40s. Now 60 heading for TKR number 2 this summer. Number one was 8 years ago. Those scopes bought time. Dr. Pete Fowler joked after the first one I had the knees of a 60 year old man. The arthritis caused tears and those couldn't be left. I know that scopes aren't as prevalent these days but hey they bought me invaluable time. Maybe you could talk about the knee innovations in the replacements in an upcoming episode.

I think I need to go to Canada. I had meniscus detriment performed 8 years ago. was fine jogging and daily activities until the last year. Been to 2 orthopedic docs this year (the 2nd because the 1st guy would not do an mri)..and he only gives 3 minutes to ask questions. They told me I have a Baker cyst behind my knee, but still year later said no point in draining the cyst because it will just come back. THEN the front part of that knee, has a swollen lump where one of the incisions was from the meniscus surgery....lump the size of golf ball. So....I was barely able to walk on it for past 3 months. Their only "solution " is knee replacement...yet the xray was not total bone on bone yet. I am not a doctor, but it seems to me if they scoped out possible debris from the "tunnel" where the arthroscopic incision was, I believe this would elinate my swelling. I am only in my 50s and do not think this merits a "total knee replacement ". Oh and by the way, the osteo arthritis is only in one compartment and not a large area. It seems to me like the Jupiter Florida docs just want easy fix for maximum amount of money. I am considering now going for a 3rd opinion but would the doctor think I am in denial? What should I do? 😮
@TalkingWithDocs
@TalkingWithDocs 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Laura. Sorry to hear you are struggling. There is good evidence that scoping an arthritic knee is not effective. The main role for arthroscopy is symptomatic meniscal tears. Total knee may be appropriate or possibly uni compartmental replacement. A third opinion is not unreasonable. You need to be comfortable. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing

All my doc told me before my meniscectomy and chondroplasty is that if that surgery didn't work that I would need a total knee replacement. I'm 2 weeks out and can hardly walk. I can't go in any store that doesn't have an electric scooter/wheelchair. I am not able to live this way. I am maxed out on meloxicam. We knew I had bone on bone before the surgery which I had cortisone shots for 2-1/2 years and then had a Duralane shot that didn't work.

With typical "wear and tear knee osteoarthritis" that is often caused by physical activities (lifting weights, excessive jumping or whatever) the articular knee cartilage gets worn out and reduces the knee joint space. The knee joint then becomes inflamed and causes pain. Are we saying that a poor inflammatory DIET, even with a normal weight individual, can also cause wear down knee articular cartilage and cause the same inflammatory osteoarthritis knee pain that physical activity often causes? That is pretty scary
@TalkingWithDocs

My 15 year old son had 1. Debridement chondroplasty patella, 2. suprapatella and infrpatellar fat pad debridement 3. Plica excitation with limited synovectomy on 2/10/23. 8 weeks of PT and 4 weeks of rest. Initially pain free with complete range of motion. It has become more and more painful to the point pain is daily now and cannot squat down or perform weight lifting squats or leg press exercises without significant pain. While I know you haven't seen him and can't diagnose, what types of things can cause return of pain and in some instances much more pain? He's big for 15, 6'3 and 250lbs. But before he had surgery he could squat over 300 and could workout leg press with over 400lbs. He's 15 not 35 and we need some help. We trust our surgeon but he has no answers.

So sorry to hear this. Yes difficult to diagnose without seeing him. We would want to rule out an infection. Would repeat X-rays and likely an MRI. If no infection would likely consider an injection at this point. A second opinion sounds like a minimum. We wish him the best of luck

My daughter was diagnosed with weak tendons, one pulls harder than the other on her knee cap, plus she has a tumor ( which is benign but was told normal on her shin as teens get them? ) she does wear a brace at least 4 days out of the week, she is active in softball and volleyball….surgery was ruled out and therapy isn’t helping, what other options does she have? She is 20 and been hurting for the last 3 years with this

Hi Thomas. You could consider a topical medication for pain. Maybe a different therapist or brace. And maybe a second opinion regarding possible surgery. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Doctor's T/F Question: Regarding weight loss, I've heard more than once that reducing body weight by 5 pounds will effectively reduce the strike-force on the knees by 250 pounds. Is this true?

Hmmm Greg we would say no. 1 pound weight loss can lead to 4-7lb less stress on the knees depending on the activity. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Can you do a follow-up for patient hip replacement pain during the healing process? Could be my two bad knees but I've started having some discomfort in the hip area after 7-8 months post-op. Stopping your own PT at home? Not enough exercise/movement? Hope this makes sense...

Hi Doc, i just had arthroscopic surgery because of arthritis. The doc said its an easy surgery, not so invasive however it's been a month and I'm in so much pain and i don't have full range of motion, barely 90 degrees, is this normal? I'm so scared that i can't bend my knee!! 😨😢😭 I'm healthy, used to do yoga and very flexible and have strong legs. why am I so stiff, my leg is frozen. Would i be normal again? I'd appreciate your feedback 🙏🙏

I had a TKR , Feb. 2 this year. Went back to work on the 18 th of April. I’m wondering about the hair on my operated leg, I have shaved my knee down the bone to my ankle 4 times since the surgery , my leg that wasn’t operated on hasn’t had to be shaved since. What’s the deal with so much hair growing, it is only on the bone area and not the entire leg.

My doctor just recommended arthroscopy but I am nervous. I had a meniscus repair done 2 years ago and it hasn’t felt right since surgery. Most of my pain isn’t in the area where I had surgery but around the knee cap. X-ray shows no sign of arthritis and mri did show I may have a slight tear that never healed. Idk what to do. I’m 33 for reference and love to play sports and run. Please help.

Hmm Ricky that is a bit odd. Sometimes the leg is manipulated during surgery to get the camera to certain locations but usually that involves the knee more than the foot. Should improve. If not maybe contact your surgeon. Thanks for watching and subscribing

I would have liked to have YOU as my doctors🥺 my doctor did this surgery he saw some fluid (I tell you that my knee has been bad since February this year badly taken care of) anyway after an MRI my meniscus was torn then surgery then after 4 days with the orthopedic appointment my knee still inflamed the orthopedic send me some blood test and the results was positive in lupus and arthritis probably arthritis but LUPUS? I don't even have symptoms 🙄 but he scared me so much and then he said i will send to you to rheumatologist (since he looks enough with the results of his surgery), now after 2 weeks and 3 days my knee feels better it's not so swollen like before 2 weeks ago do you have any advice (i still go to the rheumatologist) thank you for being in this world you can safe lifeS so that people don't commit suicide out of fear 😰🙏

About knee replacement - why are you guys joking about how miserable people are in order to have to finally have this done? Being at your wits end after years of suffering is not a joke. You're young now but just wait. I've been physically active managing arthritis for decades and at times that feels like a curse, with arthritis eating away at many joints in my body no matter how healthy I eat and how active I am. I cross train, swim laps, bicycle and hike....not overweight....still the suffering is endless

we need more integrity from the medical profession. knee scopes for the most part are not a good procedure. patients are cut on and the REAL problem is not actually fixed. so the Dr's charge a lot of money to vac your house but the floor is still dirty. the outcomes, spanning thousands of samples, are not great overall. outcomes for an expensive surgery should be overwhelmingly positive and they should fix the underlying issue. with this procedure, it is just not the case. recommendation - do not get this procedure unless you have multiple opnions and they definitely point to meniscus removal as the solution. most of the time it is not. there is something else causing the pain. but steroid injections do not pay as well as a $5k+ scope does it?
@TalkingWithDocs
@TalkingWithDocs Жыл бұрын
So we would agree. In Canada things are very different. And guidelines have changed to not pay for arthroscopy in the setting of moderate to advanced arthritis because it doesn’t provide long term benefit. Hope that helps clarify
