I had the same problem after a revision surgery when I was 11. I actually had to have the surgery twice because after the first one I fell on my stump (very much like you did) and messed up the work that had been done. BTW as you know how much it hurts to fall in your stump I think you can appreciate this. Until I had a heart attack falling on my stump was the most painful thing I'd experienced. The heart attack hurt worse. So take good care of your heart.

@Brainbot Jezebel that's not phantom pain. That's called empathetic pain. Your body empathizes with the pain you are seeing or hearing about one person enduring by reminding you how that pain might feel. Just ask any guy who sees another guy get kicked... ummm you know where, and let them tell you how empathy can feel.

Many years ago I had jaw surgery and I was wired shut for 7 weeks. They told me it would be stiff when I was liberated. One of my priorities was to brush my teeth again. Had to go to a drug store and buy an Oscar the grouch tooth brush to find one small enough to fit at first.

I remember getting out of my cast when I broke my foot. The pain in my ankle/calves was horrendous the first few days. Way worse than actually breaking my foot. Obviously you should follow what your doctors say, but I remember reading that I should write the alphabet in the air with my foot to regain mobility. It was so difficult at first but I did it religiously several times a day. At my one week follow up, I had full mobility though not yet strength. My orthopedist was thrilled with my progress. I wish you a full/quick recovery.

I had hip surgery years ago and one knee was in plaster unable to bend for 3 months... Took about a week to get it to 50 degrees which was the minimum required for the flight home. Took another couple of months to get back to 90 degree bend. You'll do great Jo, yes, it'll take time, rehab, exercise and probably more pain and discomfort but I have no doubt that you'll get there!

I’m curious; after this latest surgery you’ll obvs need new shells etc. for your prosthetics, but are there parts from your old prostheses that you’ll be able to reuse? E.g. will you be able to reuse your current liners, or is that dependent on factors? And what about your running blade? Can you reuse the blade but with a new shell? Or does a whole new blade need to be made custom? Congrats on the leg-moving milestone!
@nicelliott1175
@nicelliott1175 Жыл бұрын
I am also very curious about this, especially because Mr. Nubbins will probably change in size and shape quite a bit as the remaining swelling goes down and you rebuild muscle. It doesn't sound like you will be wearing your prosthesis for a while (I'm guessing not for the 4-6 months of recovery from surgery, while the pain is expected to be worse than before) or only very minimal wear, but what about after that? Is this the sort of surgery that would normally cause a lot of change in your residual limb, or is it primarily dependent on how much it affects your pain and the associated change in function/overall use of your shorter leg? How interchangeable are sockets, feet, and pylons (the upright part, not sure if I have the name right)? If you feel up to it, a new video on the different parts of a prosthetic leg and how they fit and work together would be awesome and could be a great collab video!
@waffles3629
@waffles3629 Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the foot and running blade can still be used because they aren't custom made for each person. The socket might, I don't know.

I gotta give it to you. I didn’t know why muscle degradation felt like until covid and when we were all stuck inside and I gained weight and let myself go, I never felt soooo out of shape. I’m still coming back from it. Every time you get a surgery on your limb you gotta rehabilitate it and that’s hard with two legs let alone one. It looks like it’s healing nicely though!

I broke part of my hand last year and had to have it splinted for like six weeks. When I was finally able to take the splint off, I could still barely move it. It took several months of rehab to even be able to kind of form a fist. For a while it was like it wasn't even my own hand because I'd be trying so hard and it wouldn't move at all. I still can't fully move it properly and, because it broke along a joint, I might never be able to. It's a real pain because I discovered that I apparently had a habit of putting my meds in my right hand, and now they just fall if I do that because I can't fully close my hand 😅

I had many leg fractures back in the days when a broken bone meant three months in plaster of Paris. I know well that the difficulty really starts when the cast comes off and you have to start moving your leg again again and putting weight on it. Damn, that brings back memories... After i broke my knee I wasn't allowed to bend it for 6 weeks, then when I finally got cleared to bend it to 90⁰, It wouldn't move and would just flop. I literally had to sit there and squeeze a random muscle as hard as I could, just to see a slight twitch either up or down to figure out how to move it. That was 3 years and 2 surgeries ago, and now I'm walking around on it fine (running and jumping are a bit out of my range tho, it may be a psychological thing but I'm terrified of any kind of impact)

I badly broke my left leg just above the knee flipping a motorcycle last September. Shortly after I started walking with crutches I went to physical therapy to get my range of motion back in my leg. Then had to get surgery again to remove cement from my leg because bone wasn’t growing around it and bits of bone from my hip was spliced in its place. That reset all that first physical therapy work and now I’m going through physical therapy again.

Man, seeing this reminded me of when I sprained my ankle most recently - I hadn’t had the option to wrap, elevate, compress OR rest it immediately after or for an entire week. It had healed most of the way after about a month, but it was so so so stiff. I’d been favoring it while it was healing to the degree that a lot of muscles had atrophied. Here’s to physical therapy for not only helping me get my full range of motion back, but also strengthening my leg so I stopped spraining my ankle!
