agree Mark. I think this mis-guided loyalty to the brand, is the only reason that Land Rover are still in business (people want the badge). Sadly, this is the reason they haven't got their act together. If you build crap - and people keep buying it, what incentive is there to 'up your game'? Buyers need to punish them by removing their custom before LR will learn their lesson.
@peterfranklin1759

It is, for some people the badge. But also, when they are behaving they are really good cars to drive for many reasons. It's all a question of how much you are prepared to put up with. I had a Discovery 4. Absolutely loved it when it worked. But it was so very frustrating when something went wrong and for sure that happened regularly. I'd be either as happy as a sand boy at times and at others suicidal (not literally). So you eventually reach a decision whether you want to get another Land Rover. For me? I think I've been there and done it. The Disco is long gone now.

@@peterfranklin1759 Tosh I've had Mercedes for 30 years now the only issue I've ever had was availability of parts during covid when my wife decided the car park concrete pillar was weaker than the wing mirror test she tried and a faulty engine fan which had to be replaced delayed again for the same reason. That's the sum total of issues in 30 years. I also had new Fords for 15 years and the worst issue I had with them was a faulty central locking on a door. I would never buy a Land Rover or a range rover the electrics are so poor you need three not two to ensure your are on the road at all times. This is down to design as this stuff is plug and play in terms of construction now. The dealer should have replaced the loom and ECU's parts easily available. Whilst I accept the dealer talks to JLR, the dealer is the one reporting the faults to JLR. They cannot be blameless in this mess. Poor company poor standards situation normal at JLR.

We had a Freelander 2. Utter nightmare. Other LRJ owners I know have had expensive problems too. I also can’t understand why people stay with the brand. We then had a Merc 4Matic, brilliant and now on our second Hyundai which have been superb. We’re not worried about the badge on the front but more about well built reliability.

@@peterfranklin1759I feel your pain. First time D4 owner bought new in 2016. Is it sublime to drive? Yes. Is it expensive to run? Yes. Is it time, at 35K miles to change? Yes. But what do replace it with? Is it the badge and the driving experience? Yes. I love it to bits and the longest I have ever owned a car. It ticks all the boxes for me. It tows brilliantly, it drives superb, it’s a van, it can hold 7 people in comfort if needed, it only cost £47K and if LR still made the D4 I would have another tomorrow. The new 110 Defender, as a replacement, is nearly there but it’s not as practical and a ridiculous amount of money IMHO. What did you replace yours with if you don’t mind me asking👍

I was at an independent LR service garage yesterday getting a second opinion on the front brakes on my D5 as Marshalls wanted to fit new discs and pads. The garage owner mentioned they had recently repaired a Range Rover that had an electrical fault and the main dealer wanted to fit a new wiring loom at a cost of £3K plus labour. They investigated the fault, replaced the faulty component that cost £70 and they charge £82 + VAT labour.

A think the most sensible and problem free way to go is to make an offer on the vehicle you are driving around in now! You have seen that it is reliable and problem free, and as a company hack it must be a lot lower price than one off the forecourt, especially as they have had your Discovery for so long, offer that in part exchange. Good luck! Chris B.

I know this sounds horrible but listening to you made me feel better. Over the past 15 years, my husband and I have owned 12 land rovers and our experience was excellent. In February of 2023, I received my new 2023 Range Rover Sport P530 that I ordered. It turns out the underbody and muffler system had rust all over it. I never received any explanation for what caused the rust. After waiting a long time, in January 2024 the replacement parts showed up but they were badly damaged. So, they made an order for new parts. It’s now mid-March 2024 and no ETA on parts. I have tried to contact JLR and there is no one to speak with. As it turns out, I ordered a new Range Rover Sport SV that is supposed to show up in May of 2024 and I am having serious doubts about accepting the car. It would help if Land Rover had customer service but as you say, that isn’t on the menu. Thanks for letting me share. Good luck with your car.

@@darrenhaywood9260 Much like Lada back in the day when the people who knew about them got hold of them and fixed the factory issues they ran forever. The trouble is you simply can't do that anymore. The electronics in cars are designed to be dealer only fixes and that's all manufacturers. The problem comes when you have the shoddy workmanship that JLR have and have always had. For a company that has produced some of the most beautiful cars in both badges in the world real pieces of superb engineering JLR is a tragedy of a company. The XK, E type XJS, XJ6, P5B,P6, SD1 to name but a few from line of cars that were truly ground breaking and great design you get this rubbish from them. Between myself and several friends, we have owned several JLR cars over about 15 years and when I say several - I mean around 15 (mainly Range Rovers and some Freelanders) and without exception all of them spent far too much time in the dealer under warranty. The irony is, JLR is so used to this happening their breakdown service and the loan cars are incredible and available. If you can tolerate the inconvenience they are still lovely machines. My friends continue, I have had enough, went back to BMW. A relative put a Jaguar he has owned for years into Marshalls, they bricked it with a firmware update. Due to the age of the car it took them nearly 6 months to hand the car back in a repaired state. You sold the best car you had.

Like I said on the last video about the issue… you’ve got the patience of a saint and I’d have lawyered up ages ago lol. But if you do let it go, I’d love to see a 110 on this channel. You nailed it with the last Defender and would be great to see what you’d do with it’s bigger brother. That said, my 2012 Disco is in the JLR shop right now. It started surging and sputtering and stalling a little. Thought maybe a thermostat issue as it only did it when the engine was cold’ish. Or maybe the ECU or an O2 sensor. Dunno. They’re of the opinion it’s actually the gearbox. Uh oh!!!! So they’re reflashing the transmission’s software back to factory settings. Apparently these things have some adaptive learning voodoo that lets the vehicle learn how you drive, and adjusts the gearbox timing accordingly. Fingers crossed that’s the fix, otherwise it’s a mechanical issue and will have to be sent to a transmission specialist . Big bucks!!! But it’s been with JLR a week now… and that’s not a good sign 😳

Check out Discovery 4 HSE! Less electronics (still heaps!, but less). Because of Ford at the time, parts are likely more available and cheap. They are generally good on major issues, with diesel engines breaking crankshafts if not looked after, and parking break if not looked after. I have a Disco 3 and have very minimal issues over nearly 5 years, 300K strong. Worth considering with cost of probably 10k pounds for you there, then add 5k for initial fixes, and 15k spare for any big stuff. There will also be many independent mechanics that will be able to sort issues, and no dealers or JLR to deal with! Worth a thought??!!

A 2 litre engine in a 2*5tonne vehicle with full time 4 wheel drive is going to be horribly overworked. Imagine buying a Volkswagen Passat for example, it weighs 1*5 to 1*7 tonnes now slap a caravan on the back to take it up to 2*5tonnes and never unhitch the caravan. Would you expect that 2 litre diesel to perform perfectly for 5/6 years and 60k miles, I wouldn’t unless it had a full service every 5k miles.

I may be looking to buy my next car this year. After seeing your story and also having owned a few range rovers. Im know probably going to go with something like bmw x5. Don’t get me Wong i like jlr products BUT there so unreliable and seem to be plagued with issues. I have been lucky and unlucky with land-rover. But not having your car for nearly a year is outrageous. Also I’ve noticed insurance seems for me 500$ more than an equivalent competition and in a higher category to the disorder 5 i compared.

Why don't you go for the Rengerover Sport! Guess how much is the same car you're sitting in, worth in Ireland! €75,000. And, the road tax is around €1435 a year. I moved from the UK here 10 years ago and after brexit, cars are unbelievably expensive in Ireland. Saw all your vids about your Disco and wanna thank you for helping me in deciding NOT to buy it.

My 2l Discovery was in the garage for nearly 8 months and finally getting it back even though its serviced and MOT it just feels sluggish and full of electrical gremlins. Am considering getting rid of it. Best and worst car I have ever owned. Sadly its worth very little.....its a dilemma

I love the idea of a Range rover or Range Rover sport. Sadly my budget would be three to five years old with 50,000 miles leaving be with a pot set aside for repairs. Now I have issue with repairs to high end second hand cars and currently own an Audi and a 911 out of manufacturers warranty. Its fine. They aren't new and things go wrong. However. I'm aghast at the current state of the land rover market including reliability, after sales care, lead times on parts, theft etc. I can't ever see me owning one unless I can afford new and sell it on before end of warranty. It's such a shame that a great car is blighted by such poor reliability. You'd be forgiven for thing that they are being built by British Layland in the 1070s

You poor bloke. Mate, stop the self flagellation, just buy a Land Cruiser, you won’t regret it. I drive a V8 petrol 200 series & other than being thirsty, is a pleasure to drive. Great towing vehicle and not bad off road. Once something has been been hit with the French or Pommy stick, it’s just no good. 😂

Suspension bushes have perished due to being left standing for 7 months? Are you really that stupid? Suspension bushes wear out with age on any car. Leaving a vehicle standing doesn't make a blind bit of difference. It's amazing how many people are blaming JLR for this parts issue. Do they really think JLR manufacture wiring harnesses? Of course they don't - it's a part that is produced by a third party. The question is, why is the supplier not able to provide a replacement? Your Discovery 5 isn't a new car, and it may well be that the particular wiring harness is no longer manufactured. If the supplier exhausted their stock supplying JLR for new vehicle production and then stopped manufacturing them, it may well be that they will wait for a minimum back order to build up before they do a new production run. If companies have cut their costs in the aftermath of COVID, it is possible that this scenario is the reason. In the old days of Austin and Morris, these companies used to build their own body shells, engines, chassis, running gear and electrics but, starting with the body shells, almost all these items have been outsourced. Pressed Steel Fisher, for instance, was once part of BMC.

Without a doubt, get rid of it. Just wipes the slate clean. If you have another problem, you will really be kicking yourself for keeping it. New Defender 110 all the way. It will do everything an old Defender will do with the comfort of the Discovery. Any Land Rover is a risk on reliability. So just keep throwing the dice til you get a good 'un.

JLR clearly don't value you as a customer. They could have delayed production of new cars to fix cars that are broken - but the lure of £££$$$ is too great for them. And you really are part of the problem in considering another JLR unless you really really need one for off-road or towing ability.
