Double de clutch, that is, put the clutch peddle in, move the gear stick to the neutral position, let the clutch peddle out and at the same time give the accelerator a quick blip, put the clutch pedal back in and shift the gear stick into the required gear, let the clutch out. Should work a treat. Don't keep shifting without doing that because that horrible crunching noise will turn into horrible and expensive damage.

I bought a a 1956 Series 1(Reg XKO 120) in the late 1960's to learn to drive, I passed my test in it though being winter (and with no door tops) I'm sure the examiner was pleased once the test was over. With hindsight it was probably the best Land Rover I ever owned (certainly the most reliable). I stuck with the LR marque for another 49 years up to the TD5 Discovery which was brilliant when it wasn't broken down (most of the time). Nowadays I wouldn't accept a Landy as a gift. Excellent video and brought back many happy memories!

What you called the PTO under the winch is what you use to start the engine with using the starting handle you said was the handle for the jack. That is a beautiful landie and I want it. Take care of it and enjoy.

Double de clutch on the downshift, you'll pick it up quite quickly. Defender rims look the same to the casual observer, but are wider and have a better offset for filling the arches, and will give many possible tyre options without taking away the classic look, particularly if painted bronze green to match.

One good thing about driving with the top off is that you feel that you are going much faster, so there is no thought that you are crawling along at 40 MPH, but do not drive with the windscreen folded down without it being latched, that may seem obvious as the wind will slam it back upright with huge force, the metal bracket between the two hanging ropes is to secure the spare wheel to the rear bulkhead. It's not a pto at the front, it's for jump starting. That's why your starting handle is about a foot shorter than a standard starting handle. Also, you should be double de-clutching on downshifts or you'll be needing a gearbox sooner rather than later. In terms of springs, spray then with chain-lube or some other thick penetrative lubricant. You'll probably find they're stiff due to the friction between the leaves. The small bracket on the bulkhead behind the seats is to secure a spare wheel.

Love it, Learn to double de clutch and it will save a rebuild took me a while but dont let it crunch!! and the engine would be a 2 ltr petrol 2.25 came in Series II in late 58 or early 59 I think. Look at Lucas L588 glass lights to replace the indicators as they look better imho and they will match your side lights.

Glad to hear you have come around to keeping it original and enjoying the fact that it shows the age, without looking bad, love it for what it is - rare, original and special😎👍 I maybe tempted to give that offside front wing a bit of wear, with some scotchbrite or similar, so it blends in with the rest of the vehicle, see what others think. I would double declutch on the downshifts as others have said.

Great fun need to double clutch on down shifts lol 😝 bouncy springs but definitely need skinny high profile tyres to have any semblance of ride comfort- it sounds amazing and looks amazing but it’s your car so spray it yellow or grey if you want to after all your defender shows the cosmetic and mechanical enhancement benefits 🤘

They started out 2ltr, then went to 2.25ltr. A couple of turns of rope around the winch, tension the free end to pull, slacken to let it slip, allows very fine control of the pull. We pulled out a hedge with the capstan on dad's 2a.

It could be that your stick is to be wedged onto the accelerator so that a higher engine rev can be maintained. I would suggest if someone has been using the winch or the PTO to run a machine.

Couple of small notes. I don't believe the seat material is factory, as well the chain guard isn't factory as the originals where 2 peices of material vs one long one. The single peice chain guards are better as they are quieter as you go along. The winch is used by looping a rope over the turret and applying tension to it, lots of videos about it. The shaft out of the side of the winch is for the starting handle only, not farm machinery. Lastly the steering wheel has a cover on it, and not factory. There are some nice ones on Ebay that fit nicely. Lastly wheels and tires, if you put 16" rims (from a 109 for example) you'll need to swap in a 109 speedo to keep the speedo accurate.

As per another comment if you double de clutch you allow the gears to mesh smoothly with no noises. You blip the throttle in between the change to align the internal speeds then it will just drop in. Once mastered you can do it without even thinking!

Look for 1 tonne or 2b forward control wheels. You're missing the two stays on top of the windscreen that tie into the bonnet catches when folding the windcreen down.
@eightlegger

Your piece of wood is part of the jack handle. It would have had a mechanical screw type jack, to operate them it was wound with a long metal handle on one end there was a loop in to this you put your piece of wood to form the "T" of handle to wind up or down.

Definitely need to double-declutch, not good for the gears to allow it to crunch as you'll chip teeth. It's not that difficult, start by just treating neutral as a gear, so 3rd to neutral, then neutral to 2nd. A little throttle while you do it will help match the revs. You'll soon be doing it like second nature.

I'd suggest fitting the wider rims from a series 2 or 3 LWB. These will take 7.50" wide tyres such as an Avon Rangemaster all terrain tyre, a big improvement to what you have now yet still very much in keeping visually, to the extent that most people would not even think they were non-standard.
