It's not really a collection. It was garbage that someone couldn't throw away. I had a friend who managed a storage facility, and most of the units were just filled with broken furniture, etc. It's garbage that people can't throw away. Someone already pulled the valuable cards out over 20-30 years and this was the crap that was leftover. While it is a collection of crap, a collection implies an intentional reason to save certain cards.

Ya, I've had this happen a few times, not to this extent, but sometimes you need to take a gamble because all it takes is 1-2 cards and it can be worth it. It's always fun to chase as long as you have other more profitable deals then taking a gamble like this every once in a while doesn't hurt.

Another interesting story, Chris. Thx for sharing. How about a future vid on the definition of a 'rookie' card. My friend owns a small card shop and is stuck in: whatever Beckett has designated by "RC". COMC has a different equation. Parallels (which Beckett does not include), etc. You often see 'RC; or 'Rookie Card' on ebay of those which are clearly not. And the companies have recently been printing 'RC' on varying kinds of cards. ie., draft pick cards, which most collectors have clearly not elevated them to the same status. What is your take?

Hey everyone. Modern day cards, particularly the 80’s and 90’s, how well should they fit in a PSA slab? The standard size card, should there be any gaps or should it be a perfect fit? Like if you were to shake the slab would it be normal to here a little shaking sound? I ask because I’m looking on eBay and it seems like 90% of the cards I was browsing have a gap. Specific cards I was looking at were ‘87 Greg Maddux and ‘94 Alex Rodriguez. The abundance of cards with a gap made it seem the gap was the norm, a perfect fit was the rarity. Thanks

I agree, well played. With 3 million cards even if there were a handful of big scores, it could have been more profitable. I'm sure it was a little fun going through them, and having the transportation costs covered going in and coming out was a plus. Also nice to have the friend bail you out after you pulled a few grand out with the lots. For your business partner it was definitely a safe bet.

Love the story. I always learn from the experience. I can image there are so many storage units and house full of junk wax era commons. Too bad that the print runs ruined the prices of quality players rookie cards from that era. Examples Tony Gwynn, Bo Jackson (mostly high prices for 10's), Brett Favre, Wade Boggs, Ken Griffey Jr (except for Upper Deck 10's), Kirby Puckett, and others that I forgot to include.

At least he got the safe out of it. I believe after going through 50 boxes and not finding squat, I'd passed on them no matter what he offered them for. The seller likely didn't want the burden of paying the storage costs anymore & knew there wasn't anything of value. That was a lot of junk but a really nice safe.
