PART TWO: • Choosing and Setting U...
I visited Costa Rica a couple years ago, and while I was there, I met hundreds and hundreds of wild poison dart frogs. Ever since, I've had the desire to bring a little chunk of that landscape home with me - now, thanks to the help of TANKED Modern and the DFW Reptarium, I've gotten the chance to! In this video we set up EVERYTHING our darts are gonna need in their new home - plants, hardscape, substrate, etc. I'm going to be letting the plants get established for a while before adding any frogs, but the entire process was a great time and the final result exceeded my expectations.

When tanks are expensive just because they have slightly abnormal measurements or no plastic borders on the corner but you could build it with literally some acrylic from home depot, a table saw, and some acrylic cement.

Another leaf you can use for leaf litter are Catappa leaves (India almond leaves). They are used in Aquariums and have beneficial health properties, such as anti-fungal, anti-septic, anti-bacterial (disease bacteria, not beneficial bacteria), anti-external parasitic, anti-viral. They release vital tannins into your water as well, so try adding one into your water dish. Sprinkle a few around your vivarium as well. They are 100% biodegradable. They are available in small, medium and large sizes.

Hello, I am designing a viv background using great stuff and had a question about curing/drying, Etc. I applied foam a week ago. I left it to dry for over 48 hours before I checked it. There was a large section (almost the entire length of the background) that was full of clear dark brown liquid. I cut open as many of the large pockets as I could to let it drain/dry. There are still a few left no larger than a quarter after 7 days. Should I be concerned? It is dry around the edges, top and face of the background, and the liquid is sealed between the foam and glass.

As this is a bio- organic set up would you consider adding some large invertebrates to live with the frogs? Maybe giant millipedes or even some medium sized snail species? I've kept panda snails, giant millipedes, spiny stick insects and 5 Litoria bicolor (tree frogs) in a 90cm cube terrarium , it was a very interesting set up and easy to maintain. Having never kept dart frogs (illegal wildlife in Australia) I'm not informed enough about their husbandry and how well they cohabit with other species so maybe it would be a very bad idea. Is there a consensus on invertebrate/ Dart frog community tanks?
@AfroHerpkeeper
@AfroHerpkeeper 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t know if there’s a consensus, but they’ll have a diverse cleanup crew. I don’t want to put anything too large in there for the sake of the plants and the overall look of the tank, but millipedes would be pretty cool.

Let me start by saying it looks amazing! However this video was somewhat confusing to me. Just recently started building backgrounds and have watched every video I could find. Every one of them says to let the foam set and then carve the top layer to form to your liking but also so the silicone adheres to it. In this video he not only didn't let the foam set but he didn't carve it, applying the silicone directly on the smooth non porous surface. If he were going to do that why not put the substrate directly on the foam and avoid the silicone? I have done that and it looks amazing. Where the foam shows through it looks like black lava rock! Does anyone reading this have any thoughts on this? I would really like to know which is proper because if this is good then I've wasted a lot of time waiting and carving! AGAIN... not a negative post , just looking for better ways to do things! Thank you
@MPL019
@MPL019 5 жыл бұрын
You are right, you should wait and carve the foam. In the video he mentions that over time the silicone will peal off, probably happens because it's smooth

Hmm? I learned that if you don't carve the cured foam and use Silicon directly on it. You will lose the adhesive effect in the long run? Which makes sense since it is similar to how you sand smooth surfaces for gluing. So, will this not make the silicone portion, peel away from th foam in the long-run?
