Everything was against us on this short hunt, the dozers, and the wind, and a surprise visit from my son, but the day was a huge success. We saved a lot of Civill War history that would have been lost under the pavement of development. join me in saving what we can.

That was interesting. Thanks for sharing. I appreciate what you're doing. There aren't so many that even want to talk about that part of history anymore. They would rather sweep it under a rug, forget it,or concentrate on one particular issue. As Americans it's our history, our heritage as much as the first settlers whenever they came, whatever their skin tone we are all connected. The Civil War were those families...they touched those things you dig up. It was part of the great struggle that is life on earth. I think it's worth remembering,it needs to be taught. Have a great weekend.🙏😊

Very true. Just like every person has good and bad and imperfections, our nation is no different, but rather than learning and embracing our history, they want to reject it and destroy it.

Well I hope to get out there again if possible. Once they start moving dirt, they move fast and a lot. Thankfully they have allowed us in there to do this without kicking us out.

Todd, you recovered so many relics in a short amount of time.mi think I saw a military button? It is amazing what gophers dig out. Too bad you did not have a saw to cut back some of the brush. I hope you can get back in there once they start excavation. God Bless you for going the extra mile to keep going back there. Take care👍👏😀

Yes indeed and it was a bit dismaying that i actually found so much. I would have rathered found little so I know the site was cleared. I can't imagine what will be forever lost in this project build. I did find a General Service Button, and the backs of 2 others. I seem to find buttons there every outing, in addition to bullets and camp lead. So sad these sites are forever gone.

Some nice saves there Todd. I see you scored an eagle button too. 👍 I had a 190 acre property that I detected for about 10 years. I had exclusive permission to the property. Beautiful rolling hills, streams, large oaks, and woods. Lots of CW relics dug there including NC, SC, and VA buttons. The place was leveled and is now houses. I didn’t even recognize it when I went back to see it 19 years later. Even the old graves that were marked with field stones were gone. Very sad to see. I’m glad I had the chance to enjoy it and save some history.

Doug it is sad to see how these places were so many died fighting a war on our own land is being wiped out. I realize we can't save every battle, every conflict, skirmish site, but some of these were major battles, such as this one with over 20,000 engaged and over 5,000 deaths. The Battlefield is almost entirely gone now. This piece of earth is the last part of the site that has remained un-developed but not now....it too is under the blade of development.

It's so sad they are juat building over everything. They are not only covering up history but are taking away the wildlife habitats. In the last couple of months in NC where I grew up and raised my kids they have spotted numerous black bear in the city near the LR college or university I think they now call it and there was one crossed the road right by the house I raised my kids in. Itsmscarey for then people and for the poor wildlife. They have no where to go.

I hate how historic sites are lost to construction. You know I've been looking for a place in West Virginia and I go nuts when I open the real estate sites and around my 4x great grandfather's farm I see "New Construction," "To be Built"... picture & hear me grinding my teeth. Thanks for going out and recovering these pieces of the past. (The groundhog seems to have been an asset in bringing relics to the surface. Do you think there would be a business in training groundhogs to "prep" excavation sites for history seekers such as yourself ahead of these digs?) 🙄 😉

Another great video. Hopefully you can get the Foreman's permission to detect once they start moving dirt. There's no telling what you could find then! What's your take on why they would dump their bullets into a fire & melt them? I'm presuming it's to use the melted lead to possibly repair some tools like soldering is done today. Hope you've been able to get in there & do a little more detecting before they got too involved in their building. As always, stay safe!

Soldiers melting bullets is a bit of mystery that has many reasons. At this site, the owner, whom I know, found over 600 bullets in one hole, never used, never fired, just buried. Many times when the enemy was about to overtake the opponent, if they never had time to pack the wagons, they burned or buried it to keep out of the hands of the enemy. Both sides used the same bullets or melted them to fit their rifles. Because this site was overtaken, I suspect they tried burning everything they could carry in their own two hands.
