For some of us the mornings are hard... moms struggling with chronic pain, mornings are usually the hardest, when things are stiff and body isn’t cooperating. Yes! I used to be a morning person but chronic pain definitely makes mornings harder (but I still have 2 small people who get up before me!), and evenings (my brain shuts off at like 7pm and I don't want to talk to anyone). I have always been a “night owl” until I needed to change my health. After hearing so much about how important sleep is to health, I decided to get up early. My “Good Morning” list starts at 8 pm. When I do the same things every night, it starts me toward feeling sleepy. This was new for me. Not everyone wants to set up the day on the night before...but when I do, I feel better for sleep at night and then sets me up for a good day.

So...mini storytime! I was a night owl. For forever a night owl. I always knew I had those evening hours to do the bits and bobs of life. I relied on those hours. My me time was late night... I'd read, paint, clean. And then suddenly, when my kiddo turned 12, those night hours were no longer working for me. I was suddenly mentally exhausted and drained by 9pm. So, I did the most foreign thing ever and started waking up at 5...and it worked! I've settled into a time between 5 and 6 and I get some me time and a jump on work for a bit before the family is up and then I have a small break getting them up and out. A bit of a breather before heading back upstairs to my office and I try to schedule a walk over my lunch. I feel more balanced with this shift. So if you're used to burning the midnight (and after midnight!) oil and realize it's not working, it's okay to turn I your night owl membership card. I never, ever thought I would but here we are...and I'm much better for it!

Thank you for sharing this! I have always been more 'up' at night when everyone else ( husband and 7 kids) is asleep. It's my sane quiet time, BUT since turning 50(ish), I can't function well the next day any more if I stay up. However, I also haven't felt motivated at all to try what you did, although it sounds appealing. I just KNOW 🙄 my 3 youngest will wake up shortly after me, no matter how early I get up and I won't get the me-time I need. Did you have an adjustment period when you switched?

@@Karen-vs2fo It took about 2 weeks before I settled in and things started happening naturally. My kiddo was 12 when I started and there were a few days when he was up early with me. We have a 7 year old who is a morning person and early riser - so having quiet time before the kids wake up would require a 4am rising time! It is a wet morning here , so I get Dawn’s grounding staring at the sunrise. I like to smell the air and listen to the little animals around our house.
