I've been learning to speak Mandarin (Chinese) with Rosetta Stone for the past 30 days and these are the results... Here's my everyday morning routine speaking ENTIRELY in Mandarin as well as a conversation with Mumma Shu! How did I do? Huge thank you to Rosetta Stone for sponsoring this video - Mumma Shu is BEYOND happy now she can finally understand what I'm trying to say in Mandarin ;)!

As a Chinese overseas student in the uk, I have to say it's very good to hear u learn mandarin and your mandarin is very good with the limitation of time. Keep practice!! :) Tip: when u want to say "I(我wo) put(放fang) eggs(鸡蛋 ji dan) in the water(进水里jin shui li)', more natural way is to say "i(我wo) make(把ba) eggs(鸡蛋 jidan) put in the water(进水里 jin shui li). or in a passive way, that is, "eggs are put in the water by me",equivalent to "jidan(鸡蛋) bei(被) wo(我) fang(放) jin shui li(进水里)" where 'bei wo' equals to 'by me'. This is quite useful because when you want to emphasize the U do the action add"把(ba)" between subject and object which is equal to "make "in the sentence"I make him cry". Hope this help! :)

I am also learning Mandarin, I was told to say 'my younger siste'r as 'wo de meimei' but I hear her only say 'wo meimei'. Did I hear incorrectly or did she say something different? I'm still very new to learning so I may have miss heard.

@@StephSmallville1 When it comes to words that are indicating a relationship, like little sister or mother/father, you don't have to add 的(de), you can and both versions are correct, but because words like sister or mother are already inferring that you have a relationship with them, you often times don't need to add the possessive 的(de). I would assume that if you were specifying whose sister is whose, you would want to use 的(de).

In one year, you're able to speak Chinese ? Bravo ! Personally, I'm a french person. I've been self-studying English for two years now because I thought English at school was to slow. I'm currently learning German, I can speak a bit in this language, and I also try to study Chinese. Currently, I can speak a little bit in Chinese but not really much, I I'd like to improve but I don't have much time... Anyway, congratulations ! I hope you'll do another update in 2019 to see your improvement, it's really amazing to see a person improving in the language she/he wants to speak from the very start ! :)

Good luck! Most of my friends speak Cantonese, and at the most, a tiny bit of Mandarin. So, I can appreciate that this is difficult. I've heard the stories. I've had coworkers who "supposedly" speak Mandarin, start to translate for me, but the clients would rather struggle in English, with me since my poor HK born or American born of HK parents's Mandarin is too hard for a native Mandarin speaker to understand. Once I moved to San Francisco, from across the bay, I could tell what I grew up hearing was different. San Francisco has more people from HK and the surrounding area. I'm from Oakland, not far, but most people were from other parts, so Mandarin. It's probably like the difference between French and Italian. Cool!
@dejashu

+Nubianette Thank you! Ahh no way, I didn’t realise San Fran had a lot of HK immigrants! Yeah, there are similarities between the two dialects but the accents can completely change it too! My mum’s accent is a lot different to somebody from Shanghai/Beijing!

This makes me realize I've been slacking way too much in my language studying. I've only improved my listening skills, but not speaking at all... I'm interested in japanese and korean (honestly all the Asian languages) probably because they are so different from my own native language I've never checked out Rosetta stone before Thnks!

I'm a British Citizen and grew up in England...However, my ethnicity is Chinese and the only reason I haven't forgotten to speak Mandarin is because my parents constantly speak it. However, I can't read nor write it and whenever I speak, I can barely form full sentences, my Mandarin is severely broken. I have no clue how to use grammar let alone basic ways of speaking and the older I get, the more I forget- I have been trying to speak Chinese every morning without adding in english words to replace the words I don't know.. For example: (Wǒ ài nǐ) [pinyin because I cant write T-T] I would sometimes say Wǒ *love* nǐ and although it sounds stupid- its how it really is sometimes. Any tips on how to get better so my parents aren't always so disappointed at my horrible broken Mandarin consisted of consistent pauses, unfinished sentences and sound effects to make it like I understand? T-T edit: Because I grew up with my parents, my pronunciation is great- I just can't speak for the life of it.

Thank you so much! Haha, it's funny you should say that - I definitely pronounced my English words with my British accent BUT when I speak Cantonese to my parents/other Chinese people and come across an English word - I normally tweak it with a Canto accent so they can understand it as they don't when I speak it with a British accent! I call it Chinglish! I love that it's the caes with Urdu and Korean too!

Don't be too quick to judge Ariel. One thing is that Shu was born in London, so she has a (very beautiful) accent. Different country learners will have their accents in the mix. However, in China, there are 26 provinces. Each province not only has its own "Chinese" language but also their own accent. The Cantonese language is an example of this. Cantonese is the local language for the Hong Kong region and also the GuangDong province. I spent three years in the Sichuan province, and they do not pronounce the same sounds like others. One of the major things was the "r" should usually accompanying words. Mandarin is not a 'cut in stone' set of pronunciation rules, the important part if the tones.

who do you think you're fooling with this? You cannot tell me you've only been studying this language for a month. There ain't NOBODY that can speak that well after only 1 month of studying. Ive lived in China for 5 months and I've been studying Mandarin like a religion and your level and pronunciation is much better than mine. so either you're lying on camera about the 1 month part; or you had some kind of major exposure when you were really young.
@offthebeatenpath3447
@offthebeatenpath3447 5 жыл бұрын
Agree. There's nobody speaking any language that well after a month. This is just another bimbo twat showing off on KZfaq.
@dejashu

I'll take this as a compliment, thanks! If you watched the full video, you'll have noted that I mentioned 1) I speak Cantonese Chinese fluently - both dialects have crossovers with words so when it comes to learning new vocabulary, there are often similarities between certain words hence being able to pick it up easier than learning completely from scratch. 2) I also mentioned that I learned Mandarin when I was younger as well as being exposed to the language growing up being Chinese - though never felt confident enough to practice my speaking skills as an adult - hence why I'm learning it. So yes, I had exposure to this when I was young. All of these points were disclosed in the video.
@dejashu
@dejashu 5 жыл бұрын
Kindly refer back to my previous comment. No need to label somebody as a "bimbo twat" without first taking the time to watch the full video or make an assumption about a stranger on the internet.

Yes I heard that part loud and clear. Watched the whole video (all 9 min & 15 monotonous seconds of it). Lucky you with the privilege of inheriting 2 languages from birth, and part of a 3rd, while the rest of us have to bust our humps slogging away at it.
@dejashu
@dejashu 5 жыл бұрын
Not an inheritance but a lot of hard work in learning a language. Similarly to you mentioning that you’ve spent the past 5 months in China dedicating your time into learning Mandarin - I grew up spending all my time pouring into books, going to Chinese school and educating myself into mastering my mother tongue, second and third language. No luck needed - but hard work just as I’m sure you’re doing with Chinese now.
