Fate is such a good girl, she wants to please her mother at her young age. I hope her mother sees she is pushing her to hard with the chores at home. Fate has a great teacher, he seems so caring for fate.

The only disturbing part is that they use a lot of " in Africa " instead of the name of their country . Africa is a continent with different countries and cultures .

I think Martha should allow her children to associate with Korean children because it is from there that they will get learn the language and culture more.. even they can learn faster from the other kids ..and also the house chores won't be a problem for her if she gets many friends as possible who could help her.. I really feel for this family especially the mum And fate..I wish them well

I see a lot of comments on how they are integrating their OWN African culture into them living in Korea. I don't see the problem with they having their African culture while they are living in Korea. They can't be like "okay let's drop everything we know about the country we were born in and live in Koreans." like wtf is this. Please try and be more respectful.

poor Martha, having to shoulder the burden of the whole family and Faith getting affected because she's the oldest child. I hope the father finds a regular job soon, so he can help at least financially.

I love all the koreans in this episode, very different but am African too (ugandan) but my mother never forbid me from seeing my friends , the parents are so held back I hope they adapt they are in Korea for God's sake

Unfortunately, African patents have very traditional and strict ideas of gender roles. My Nigerian parents always tell me I have to learn to cook and clean for my husband. I just laugh because they don't know I never plan on getting married.

Fate and Angel were so young.

Fate is still a baby, she should be playing, having friends and not worry about doing all the chores around the house. I understand we need to give our children some responsibilities so they learn but this is too much.

for those saying they should adapt Korean culture. people can't just be expected to forget their cultures and traditions. They're full grown adults who were raised in Liberia, it's apart of their identity and forever will be. it's very understandable to want to pass this to their children, they shouldn't forget where their roots are, if they choose to pursue further when they grow its up to them. they should be familiar with korean culture yes, for theirs and the kids benefit but that doesn't mean forsake your own. it's called integration.

the Korean here are so loving and accepting, it make me feel so warm. like the others said, to live happily in another country, you must adapt to the culture. I hope Martha and Jerome will do well in adapting in Korea. Seeing them learn Korean with Fate reminds me of my mother and me. She would watch baby tv shows with me to learn and studied with me when I do homework to learn English. It makes me realize how difficult it had been for her

If he wants to get a job he should learn some korean.. I know it's hard to learn when you are old, but he has to do it.. This is necessary :(( I take classes with two old ladies, and when I say old, I mean really old. They are over 70! I wish them all the best !!

This episode is so sweet and encouraging! I love how the teacher was so concerned about Fate and how he encouraged her mother to be more patient, more understanding and tender with her daughter. Korean people in this episode were so kind to this African family even the Korean children. It made me cry!

18:00 i felt that. as an african female, i always get so frustrated because i’m expected to do so much more than any male does. my dad can’t wash his own plates or else the world is over. at my little brothers age, i was doing so much more, and when me and my older sister decided to ask my mum she said ‘they’re boys, they’re different’. I wake up at around 5 for school, and get home after 5, if i’m washing the plates for all 6 of my family members, and cleaning the house, when do i do my homework and chill. I can’t change my parents, or their mindsets, so it’s up to my generation and the future ones to educate our children, and not have such double standards!

the people who hire him were really nice. I feel Korean people can be very warm just as they can be very cold..But at least they will let you know it

why is this show like watching my childhood in replay

My heart goes out to this family; especially the mother and Fate (Faith). Parents (in general) try so hard to provide the best for their kids. At the same time, kids just want to please their parents. It's okay to keep your traditions and culture in the home. When you live in another country, you must work harder and learn the language; in order to survive in that society. I hope this family finds that balance of keeping their Liberian culture in a Korean society. Please stay strong and best of luck!

What I can't understand is why they had another child in their circumstances. Their oldest child wants to go out and have fun with friends, but she is stuck playing housemaid to her siblings. Also the father needs to get his appearance together because walking around and asking for a job looking like a hobo isn't working. If he doesn't have job he could at least help his wife and daughter out around the house. Imo he really isn't trying hard enough~

Omg I’m Liberian too! My father fled the war because people were trying to find him because he wasn’t a supporter of the regime. This story is amazing.

As an African let me clear up the misconception this video has made about us, first of all there are 54 countries in Africa and we all have different cultures, when she says “we do/don’t do this in Africa” she means Liberia, I’m not from Liberia so I wouldn’t know. But I’m Nigeria where I’m from we are allowed to visit friends houses without any age restrictions if it’s in the same neighbourhood but if it’s not tell your parents so they know. The thing about doing male and female assigned roles it’s still a thing for the older generations cos they are quite conservative; for the younger generations the roles are starting to change but not rapidly, hopefully in the coming years it will be different. And chores most people don’t doing laundry with their hands until they are like 14, where I’m from, I’m not sure about other countries in Africa. Kids are given lighter chores to do but we all have to do chores so we aren’t lazy.

my edges hurt just watching her braid, because I can see she didn't leave even 1 baby hair out. There is no braids like getting them done by an African lady.

i don't like how they always say that " in africa we do this all the time, we handle things that way in africa, the man doesnt help in the house and so and so" What i am trying to say is that they always overgenerelize things and it kind of annoys me. People believe in such things if you tell them in that one sided way and they may think that every african handles things like them...But anyways great family!

I think Fate will have a very similar experience to many kids who grew up in a country different than their parents. My parents immigrated when they were in their early 20s so they sort of assimilated into American culture since they spent most of their 20s in the US before raising kids, but there definitely were parts where the immediate culture around me, and the culture that my parents grew up in conflicted. It's hard navigating this. Really hard. You want to respect your parent's culture, but you also want to experience the culture your friends and classmates all live. I sure hope Fate and the other girls are getting through it well.

Im born in singapore my mom is really similar to fate’s mom..at 5 years old i already know how to do chores,cook,take care of my baby sister(a few months old) my brother and i take turns taking care of her (morning & afternoon school) because our mom has to go to work and our stepdad is a deadbeat druggy.alot of the things i learn at that age helps me alot throughout growing up..trust me its not that bad

It’s beautiful that the mother showed the effort of wanting to understand Fate and what she is going through and that Martha started to change for her family, it was a good idea to make Fate’s friends help her in her study to feel less pressure and enjoy friendship at the age, the idea of instead of Fate going to her friends’ house they come to hers is also a nice one, I hope they adapt well in Korea

I cried all along the program like I’ve been through the same situation as Fate and it is really hard to live without feeling love from both of your parents ㅠㅠ

I feel for faith because I'm 13 and I also have to do lots of things around the house as my mum is south African and was also raised to clean and cook at a very young age but I feel like her mother needs to let her rest otherwise she'll be very stressed out at a young age and in years to come. She does so much without complaining and she's a great daughter, her mother needs to just let her enjoy her childhood and be a 9 year old girl. I'm not saying she should just sit on her butt all day long but I think at least a little while per day to just play would be nice otherwise in a couple of years we'll see faith writing in to Hello counselor😂

This episode caused me to become *so* frustrated with the parents! Treating the eldest daughter Faith (not Fate) like a babysitter, maid (kids can do chores, but not as much as that!), restricting access to visit friend's homes and then expecting her to cope with schoolwork is insane beyond all belief! Why does someone need a teacher to tell them its affecting their daughter, when it should be abundantly clear to any sane person that that is abusive behaviour? It should be common sense that having the girls' hair neatly cornrowed etc would save them time in the mornings and protect their hair from damage from all that straitening and terribly done weave-ons? Thankfully, the parents have started learning Korean, but what were they doing in the past - just reproducing? I hope that baby is their last, as they can't afford nor cope with any more kids, forget about the large families being the norm back home. As the kids learn more Korean, as long as they still can speak pidgin, they should be able to communicate to a degree. The husband, for being as unhelpful at home as he is, seems completely absent minded, which could be due to torture or something else. The Liberian English translations in the English subtitles aren't always accurate, but again, their accents aren't always the clearest to decipher. Liberia is in *West Africa* and the first woman's hair she was braiding was relaxed hair, not 'short and curly', which denotes natural, afro-textured hair.

Someone rescue Faith. This is not about "Africa", Martha is treating her own daughter like a maid. She is 9 and cannot do basic maths. She is under developing because of abuse from home.

This is quite interesting. They still stick with their cultures gender norms even while in another country. That husband is a worthless human being. His wife works all day and night and cleans the house, while he is just looking for a job. He could at least help her with the house a bit. Like I have never seen a husband not offer to help. I still don't understand why that little girl can't have friends and got to their house. She is in a new country and is trying to adapt. Having friends makes life easier. They are making their daughter have such a hard life and yet they came to Korea for a better one.

The 9 year old daughter is definitely more responsible than some adults out there, Therese really nothing wrong w it, I was raised in an Asian household and we have to learn early and be responsible.

I'm glad Fate has friends! I also feel bad for the mom too. Well, the whole family. They work so hard. But when the mom mentioned that they can't go to a friends house until they're 15, that's kind of mean. Like, she's a kid. Let her have friends.

That husband has to try harder, he's not in Africa anymore. It's been 9 years and he still can't comprehend the language, he doesn't help his wife, and they selfishly made their 9 year old daughter into a maid. If it weren't for that teacher calling out that selfish mother on tv, that poor kid would still be doing maid service. Those kids need to be in some kind of protective services, or at least be monitored by a social services agency. And stop having kids you can't afford.

I seriously relate to faith ,her life as the eldest daughter and being a third daughter.sometimes your childhood is stripped from you.

This made me so emotional. I think its easy to judge the parents if you did not grow up in this culture. I recall times where as a 9yr old I had to cook for my family of 6. It didn't feel like I was being mistreated, it was just the culture. I am the oldest daughter so it is my responsibility. Our African parents raise us the best they could in a country that was not their own so we can have a better life than they did. That is why they always push us so hard; it is because they love us.

I can so much to Fate, cleaning as the oldest and having no help from the other siblings. As an african tho...that HAIR! I might go to korea just to help korean parents do their children's hair.
