I don't think he is being strict he is just aware of Korea's obsession with beauty. As the mother said she likes when people tell her that her daughter is pretty to the point that is something that she enjoys that's okay but for a kid to starr thinking from such a young age beauty is the most importan thing is not correct. I understand the father he wants to teach her how to value herself and not only find her value through her beauty. sorry my bad english

@zephyra I actually live in korea and 99% of kids models i see are korean- the ones you see in shows, consumer goods, and etc. The half Korean kids you probably know is a very small minority, who will appear maybe like once a year. Maybe they mostly model in america

I'm French and I think the dad is just a perfectly normal dad who cares about his daughters, not strict at all. Alma is behaving like a spoilt child and I completely understand his fears, especially knowing how the Korean society works, she might grow up to be very superficial

@KPop Rocks ! well that's disturbing. the dad is a very good parent, he does not want his children to grow up as dolls with no depth, the mom is the the dumbass in this situation as she can't see the bigger picture, she doesn't know how it will affect her future. So Alma's mother encourages her to be a model for her while she is not in France, Europe, or the United States. In the past, there were physically beautiful people in society who were accustomed to beauty, but Koreans tend to have surgery to make themselves beautiful. Because Americans are naturally beautiful and Alma looks more like French than Koreans.

I don't really think the father's parenting is that strict? Alma should eat by herself, limit television, and table manners will teach her how to be self-aware. I think its a lot stricter to have small children going to school for hours at a time like many sk kids do lol but that's just me. He seems like a good father, and I"m glad he's limiting alma's modeling because the industry is dirty and lookism culture is problematic.

It's Korean style child rearing where children are doted on by their grandparents and parents. This became the norm especially after Koreans started to have only one child on average per couple. As children became rare, the adults spoiled them.

And to add on, there are lots of people who will be more strict or less strict and Korean customs are one of the most strict in the world. French or any European is a small stone compared to Korean strictness.

Korean customs are often very strict, but for children who are toddler aged to before they hit age 10, they are not. Koreans believe that at this age, there should be huge leeway and lots of parental doting. The younger children are often left alone to act as they like while parents feed them during meal times even though they're perfectly capable of feeding themselves. And at this age, they are certainly not as controlled compared to the West. But rules get stricter as the children age into pre-teens. It's all in the timings. The timings when adults get stricter and expectations from children are different from Western ways of child rearing.

I totally agree with the dad. When it comes to education, parents need to be strict and rigorous in order to inculcate some strong values and how to behave properly. From what I saw the dad was just doing the basic kind of education every kid should have: no tv during eating, no extra gifts unless you deserve it and being able to favor school than a modeling career. Intelligence always comes first before beauty so I enjoy the fact that he's trying to teach this to his daughter. We clearly see that Alma is a little bit too spoiled by her mom and her grandma, that is why she behaves like a little princess. Usually, when I watch Korean shows, it is often the mom that is stricter than the dad well this time it was different. Chapeau to the dad, I can clearly see that he really cares for his family plus he's a really good cook which is a bonus !

i would never marry someone from a different language/culture than mine because it causes a conflict of interest. I prefer my partner to support me in making sure my kids continue our shared culture, not THEIRS alone.

lmao the french dad isnt even that strict. he encourages creativity with art and cooking, thats great already. he shows affection and clearly shows his expectations. of course there will be conflict in the parenting especially because of their different cultures. but if he goes just the way he is going alma and ines will grow up very well. i actually agree on him about the modelling. the entertainment industry is scary, and the dad is just trying to protect his daughter. i would do the same.

He's a really good father! He understands how harmful it can be if people are telling her she's pretty all the time and she already wants to wear makeup. Most of the things he asks of them are normal (restricted tv, studying, asking to be excused from the table). I wouldn't even say that it "French" parenting. It's just good parenting in general haha!

Her dad is right. If alma keep listen to "oh so pretty" everytime she does something (koreans lovesss to say this to kids as praising them) she is gonna be a very bad person (i think) she is going to think that Appearance is everything and she will become Very consumerist and egoist. saying to a kid that she is that and that especially about looks is bad. she can even think that she is the only pretty one and all the other kids are uglies one.

A lot of times when grandmas and older people say KIDS are pretty (which they will say to every kid no matter how they look) they are not talking exactly about the appearance. It can mean they think they are cute or their actions are lovely or they just like you. That's why koreans lovesssss to tell their kids and dogs that as you said.

I think the father is doing a fantastic job in a not so accommodating environment. SK culture is known to focus a lot on appearance from physical to relationship.. everything is about how you are perceived by others. Raising my kid in Belgium I don't have to be too careful on that. But for him it must be hard to be depicted as a strict or harsh farther when all he is doing is teach his children self-value, self-confidence and respect for themselves and other. I have been raised this way and I thank my parents everyday because seeing beautiful people on SM doesn't make me jealous anymore: thanks to my parents I know that I have my own beauty in my behavior, my respect, my education. Anyway I hope this father will keep cherishing his kids the way he does and find more support in his wife. Because if they agree they will have not only beautiful kid, but smart and kind. A jackpot 😊

I totally agree! I was born and raised in the Philippines which has a huge beauty pageant culture. Many strangers or family friends tell me to pursue being a beauty queen, even when I was a kid. But my parents raised me to value intellect and kindness above all. So even when I was a kid, I always said I didn't want to do those things. My parents gave me that choice, but the way they raised me definitely impacted my view of not overemphasizing physical beauty.

no wonder this little girl looked so familiar. her family was on another show I've watched last year and I remember Alma because she threw a little fit because her dad wouldn't buy her lipstick so she secretly bought it, I'm guessing she's obsessed with makeup/making herself look pretty. I hope she doesn't grow up thinking she's the prettiest or being called pretty and beautiful all the time because I'm pretty sure it'll be hard to make friends. Glad her dad is putting things in the right place, he's doing a good job teaching Alma, while the mother on the other hand is just spoiling her.

Mn, your right if she continued to grow with being told she’s beautiful and getting whatever she wants because he mother cannot stand being to hard on her then she would’ve grown up thinking she’s a little princess, everyone thinks she’s pretty and every thing of the sort. it’s actually really good that he makes sure she follows the rules and continues to educate her on bonding and other necessary topics

I understand where the dad is coming from. He said it himself, he doesn't want her daughter to grow up thinking looks are everything and would want her to neglect everything else. He wants her to grew up to be an intelligent, creative and independent women. Right now, she's only being called "adorable," "pretty," and "beautiful" and I think that would definitely be a big problem in the future if she isn't taught proper manners. She's basically being spoiled by everyyyyonneeee and thats not good.

lol Dont worry, her French mixed privilege and international "global" status will ensure her life is just fine. Mixed people that present a symbol of a minority cultures erasure is always looked favorably upon. She'll probably get some modeling deal and live a comfy life. Most people would rather cruise by on their looks, make more money than slave through school to work some 9-5 job making far less.

I don't know, it's not like the mom is making the wisest of choices. All she seems to care about is her daughter's looks and not her daughter's brains. He was totally lenient about the modeling, and then look at Alma now! Mom had her way, and her way is downright turning this child into a spoiled little brat. I'm sure he would've been okay with Alma continuing if Alma hadn't turned out the way she is now.

I actually really agree with the father he's trying to teach her morals, respects, values, and all the stuff in life that someone needs. He wasn't overly strict he was actually looking out for her and I'm glad that he wasn't letting her get too spoiled as well by her grandparents. The mom should work on her parenting though, because he does a lot of hard work to teach her and then she goes and hugs her or melts because she says she's cute.

I'm actually so surprised at her personality and behavior! You'd think a kid raised in such a respectful, proper & yet free manner where the parents encourage the child to try do many things would make the child to be a bit disciplined and respectful but Alma acts a bit bratty. I'm not blaming anyone for this and of course I'm not judging Alma because she's just a child and it seems like she doesn't understand why her father is restricting so many things. I don't know but something isn't right in this family...

My parents would have never let me behave like she did with her grandmother.. watching tv while eating, not even showing thankfulness to the grandmother feeding her was so rude to me... The mom said that he should at least let Alma do photoshoots during the holiday not that the photoshoots are only on the holidays but I agree that he just cares about his daughters and in the future the daughters will appreciate everything that he's done for them. They'll grow up to be beautiful, smart, and respectful women.

The other day I was shocked to hear a NZ mother say she never said to her pre-school aged daughter that she was pretty. She used other affirming words instead. However, watching this show I can see the damage done by Alma being constantly told she is physically pretty. It seems to be that is a major part of who she thinks she is and how she can be in life. I hope the parents both can find ways to praise their children and each other more for their actions.

I 100% agree with the father here. He doesn't seem strict at all. He's trying to instil values and discipline into his little one. Also, I think his rejection of modelling also is influenced by Korean culture, in the sense that Korean culture puts too much emphasis on appearance. It has the highest rates of plastic surgery and people are obsessed with staying youthful and beautiful. It affects one's life so much that resumes in South Korea must have your photo! You can tell when Alma gets treated like a princess and gets called beautiful, she looooves it. But I'd rather my daughter get complimented on her intelligence or hard work over superficial beauty any day. Sure, who doesn't love a compliment about their beauty here and there. It'll be detrimental to young girls when that's all they strive for though....and let's not get started about gender roles here. Her father is trying to help her unlearn the ideas she holds of beauty so that she knows women are intelligent and are capable of anything....not just to be beautiful

I have a feeling that the modeling plays a bigger role for the mother's vanity rather than the child. I can understand her feeling really proud hearing from strangers that her daughter is pretty, but there are other activities the child can do that would make her proud as well. I side with the father that she could introduce other things like art, playing sports if the mother really wants her child to have a varied experience. Besides, kids like Alma will probably forget about modeling once she finds another activity she'll enjoy. It's only the mother that keeps this interest in modeling alive.

lmao sorry but that's ridiculous if you think Korean puts any more emphasis on appearance than anywhere else or even more than U.S./Hollywood. The fact of the matter is, even if people don't explicitly talk about it, you are more favored if you are attractive, that goes for school, jobs EVERYTHING. That's just a reality.

Korean parents gift their kids with plastic surgery for graduation. I can list many more points but you can do that research for yourself. So whats ridiculous is that obviously you aren't aware of the pressure Korean society puts on people to be pretty. I know a similar pressure exists in North America but it's not to that extent. It's not bashing their culture. It's just how it is.

I completely agree with you! Plastic surgery is huge in Korea, not saying it isn't anywhere else. But you see it a lot more in Korea, especially 쌍꺼풀 (eyelid surgery). A lot of Korean students will get this as a present for getting good grades. Also their standards of beauty tend to favor those of European features. I think thats why people think their children are so pretty and have them do modeling. She IS a beautiful girl though! Can't deny that. Both kids are sooo adorable. But I think his dad is doing the right thing, humbling her and giving her values that aren't just having good looks. He knows she's going to get that a lot and she will be treated differently and may get an upper hand in some ways because of the fact she's mixed. I think her father and mother give her the perfect balance. Nothing wrong with wanting to look good and wearing makeup etc. But she's so young too, she shouldn't have to worry too much about that quite yet.

Like there aren't Koreans asking to look like Angelina Jolie, they'd rather look like Kim Taehee A KOREAN PERSON, NOT EUROPEAN. Actually I like the father's educating method. He really cares of his children and wants all the best things for them. He teaches them right things. Her grandma and aunt are way too love Alma which could make her be stubborn. Wish I could be firm and strict in teaching kids like him.

it was also wrong when he said " la television n'a pas one bonne reputation" which is in france tv doesn't have a good representation but it translated as "kids can't watch tv under five"

i agree with her dad. tbh ... i really envy her and i wish i had a dad like that... stern and strict yet soft spoken and passionate about life and also like chill. he is building good habits and structure in her life and values on things other than looking pretty and being praised. that is excellent. korean dads aren't usually as involved in their children's lives like he is so i praise him for that.

I would move back to France with the family. His eldest daughter is being spoiled too much in Korea. And- he's not strict at all. I'm the same with my daughter. First work, then fun. Children need rules.

they think that's strict? i'm pretty surprised. i thought he was giving the right amount of discipline. i'm a bit concerned for alma. while modeling is a nice and fun activity at times, it's not a good idea to get absorbed in the mentality that appearance and pretty looks should be prioritized over intelligence. it's going to make her self conscious about what others think of her all the time and that can really be destructive for one's self esteem. anyway who am i to comment on how others choose to parent their children... i'm just a little concerned and worried. hope many good things come their family's way!

People really don't know what strict parenting is. I struggled with my parents until the age of 24. - I was not allowed to go out after 6pm - They made me quit guitar and later piano lessons because they thought it was rubbish, they told me to focus on my studies. - I could not do any sport for the same reasons - Having any hobby other than reading was prohibited - I could not have friends cause they would lead me to the wrong path - I was not allowed to have a boyfriend - I could only go out with cousins or sisters - My wardrobe was constantly monitored so that I could not wear "weird" stuff. - Make-up was a BIG NO. And I could go on and on. He is not a strict parent, he is just a good parent.

Candy Smiile I suffered a lot, basically I didn't have a life. It's been 2 years since I've been living alone, but things are still really hard for me and I developed anxiety and social phobia throughout the years. Even though they were trying to be good parents, their strict parenting had so much effect on me that now I don't want a family of my own. It's a long story, but I wrote the comment just to defend the French dad, he is an amazing father :) Thanks for your concern, I really appreciate it :) Your English is perfect (I'm Italian, so neither my English is that good).

Fathima Anverdeen I am so sorry that you had to quit sports, I also hope that this strict parenting didn't have much of a bad influence on you as a person. I agree with you, I didn't do anything stupid thanks to my parents' restrictions, but I believe you can avoid your children from being an idiot with "normal" parenting too. My anxiety got worse and I've just interrupted my studies to get help from a professional. But it would be unfair to say that I got it all because of my parents, I guess there are other things that caused it. We'll see, I hope to get over it and finally get this stupid degree. I'm too old to be still in university :'( Thanks for all the support, it is always appreciated. :)

My parents are strict too(but maybe not as strict as yours). At the end, what is the result? My studies is just average, not the top in the class; I always cannot go out with friends this causes me to have some weird behaviour when im making friends; I cant even clean the toilet well... just my opinion though

People learn English because it's a lingua franca used in international politics and business. I'm sure if korean was as widely used people would all try to learn it as well. Besides, it's not like everyone in the US knows English, either. I see plenty of people speaking only Spanish or Chinese here. It depends on if you can get by without having to learn a new language. When koreans learn English, they learn it in school, starting from a young age, so it's much easier to pick up on the language (critical period for language). A middle-aged person wouldn't learn a new language if the people around them can understand their language. It's personal preference. You can't force someone to do something they don't want to.

@yay XD languages don't just become the "lingua franca" internationally out of nowhere for no reason. How do you think they gained that prestige and power in the first place? It's linked to colonialism and that hierarchy which is why that power extends that far beyond it's borders while other languages don't. People learning a little Spanish or Chinese is not the same as EVERYONE having to learn it as a mandatory policy. And I'm not talking about individual choice. And actually, you can force people to do something they don't want to do. Like immigrants to come to the U.S. may not want to learn English but if you want to be successful, guess what. you don't really have a choice.

I totally agree with the dad. This is exactly how I would want to raise my kids one day. When he says dont be a doll, its exactly my thinking. Women should grow up be substantial human beings who bring something worthwhile to the world and not just be there and look pretty. I really don't get the mother. If she thinks its for Alma to experience new things than she should experience other stuff too, like taekowndo, sports, arts, or any other skill. If she wants her to be a celebrity, maybe enroll her for some music or dance lessons, that will teach Alma some solid skills and not just let her be a pretty doll.

If u say childrens suddenly to stop doing something it is hard as per their age we adults expect them to leave any habit in sec which even adults can't do....adults find it easy but for children sudden change is not possible as are innocent and gets attached easily.

I'm proud of being french when I look at that. Being strict is common here actually and that's the way of showing love to children by providing them a great sense of what's bad and what's good and a great sense of responsibility. It's even more difficult when you aren't in your country. I deeply respect him bcs I know there's are not many frenchies who would go live in another country, as France is kinda conservative and patriotic. I'm really proud lmao sorry for bragging about France uhuh ^^' Also I recognise so much of the my education in here HES EXACTLY LIKE MY DAD

I think he is a great dad, I agree with him about modelling. He wants her to spend quality time and do experiences that are more beneficial for her age. THere's nothing strict with how the father is treating Alma. He is such a present, loving and caring Dad!

I agree with the father, I don’t think he’s being too strict. When Alma is a teen and does not listen and rebels, it’s not going to be so cute. Also, she may end up believing that her prettiness can substitute for real talent and education. It will be a hard life for her when when she realizes that’s not reality. Focusing on her looks at such an early age is not healthy at all. The mom needs to think about what is best for her daughter. I’m sure she gets a sense of joy and pride when her daughter models and looks so pretty but Alma needs to feel joy and a sense of pride/achievement about herself by learning, education and creativity. Feeling pride from people telling her she looks pretty is superficial and does not really help her achieve anything. Children should be taught that a beautiful heart and mind is more important and that everyone is beautiful in their own unique way no matter their size, color or shape. Alma believing she is more special/prettier than others is not healthy. Real beauty is not on the surface. That being said, modeling is not terrible and it’s actually a lot of hard work to be a good model. Models who have succeeded in the industry I’m sure have worked hard and should be proud. It takes much more than just a pretty face to make it in modeling, it’s serious work. But the circumstances of each child/person is different. Only the parents can really know if it’s benefits their child or not.

I can't stop watching this show! I'm randomly skipping episodes (for now) and I think this one was just as good as the one I saw before it! 😆 I completely agree with Romuald (dad) on teaching Alma manners. That is genuine love and great parenting right there. I'm SHOOK! 😍 For everyone saying he is insanely strict and unfair- I feel like he is struggling and has to be that sort of character for Alma to take him seriously. He constantly has to remind the kids of his fair rules. Honestly it's tiring for everyone involved tbh. Jihye (mom) doesn't help him! I have no idea what her thoughts are on the issue, but she doesn't seem to care in what was shown. I do think it was mean for him to throw away Alma's favorite little makeup things 😔 But he was at his wit's end without his partner's support and wanted to get his message across. The lesson is beautiful: Be an intelligent person with good morals, not a foolish person obsessed with frivolous things 🙌👏 I hope Alma and Ines grow up well! Blessings to this wonderful family 💗

The mother is so obsessed with her daughter being in the spotlight it's irking and ridiculous to watch. Her excuse of "new experience" and "memories" are really nonsense imo too. Just like the father said , there are many more opportunities than just a toxic and superficial field like modelling. Alma likes ballet, so why not let her take actual ballet classes. And creating memories, if she really thought her daughter is beautiful sincerely, candid pictures from her phone would be enough without all those makeup and pose. She doesn't have to listen from others that her daughter is pretty. I really hope the mum stop doing things against her husband's wish behind him. Doing this is exactly why Alma is having a hard time maturing and stop glorifying "pretty"/superficial things a child shouldn't be concerned of because the mum keeps bringing her into that kind of environment that the father didn't want to.

captain dirtypie There’s still a lot of white worship. Nowadays if you’re just white and average, you’re seen as most beautiful. But if you have no white features, you are automatically seen as ugly. It’s really sad how Korean society and society in general has lookism (although, Korea has the worst lookism cases I’ve ever seen) we should really stop this somehow

I totally get what the father is trying to instill in his daughters. The mom said it herself...she gets a high when she hears people calling and telling her her daughter is very pretty lol. The dad sees firsthand how South Korea is all about appearances and he does not want his kids (especially daughters) to only think and believe thats all they're worth. He does not want them imcluding his wife to put sooo much importance on looks/appearances.

The father is so active in his daughter's life. My father is an army officer and he is always either out of town or extremely busy. He never puts any effort to make me study or teach me something he knows. I don't blame him. It's his job that is so demanding. I don't understand why they emphasized only french etiquette, when there is also a korean etiquette. It just basic rules and common education, like any country. In korean etiquette, you have to respect olders, a great emission who show korean rules on children is superman return.

After watching this video, I can't help to say something about Alma's education. I totally agree with her father. And I have no ides what her mother is thinking. It seems to me that Alma's modeling career is totally to satisfy her vanity and obsession with beauty. And she cannot even to defend herself why she keeps Alma modeling. New experience? That sounds ridiculous. If she wants her daughter to experience new things, she needs to open up more possibilities for her.

the fathers parenting to me is actually quite relax seems like your normal parenting style that gives and takes allows the child to have her view point but also limiting when need be. he allowed her to have an experience he notice her demanor change which is of great concern also the makeup was a additional add i think they focused to much n that he kept consistantly bringing up his act of defiance and change of attitude and i think That in itsself is a good reason to restrict it. Now he said he would not do it forever only until she is grown enough to really truly choice and have a good mind set to think her options. that to me sounds like a pretty good parent. in order for her to gain something she must give something. not bad.

Given how demanding and structured Korean society is, I'm very surprised to see how much they spoil their kids. Does this stop after a certain age? Because I would think that parenting style would lead to a lot of behavioral problems as you see here with Alma, but older kids seem to be very obedient when it comes to studying and doing what's expected of them as they get older. I guess it's the emphasis on collectivism that helps balance things out because if kids were raised like this until adulthood in an individualistic society, they'd definitely never get over being spoiled.

I'm a Malaysian and as a mother I firmly believe that children should be brought up with a firm hand. Lots of love of course but discipline is a must. Today's society is just deteriorating and there are just too many problems facing modern youths. Scary but true. As parents we can only try to bring them up with good values that could hopefully serve them well in the future. Kudos to fathers like these. To Alma, don't try to grow up too fast. Adulthood is no fun. To the mom, too lax is undoing your husband's efforts. Dont spoil her. You'll regret it.

I don't feel like he's strict at all (seems like normal parenting to me) and I appreciate that he wants to nurture his daughter's intrinsic value and not just her extrinsic value! This will benefit her in the long run. Looks can fade, but intelligence and inner attributes can last throughout her lifespan. For me, the Korean style of "encouraging" parenting/grandparenting appears to be quite on the "permissive/free range" child style of parenting.

I would say that Romauld is one of the most responsible and involved dad I’ve seen on this show. Most of the other dads on this show (especially the Korean ones) are less involved with their kids and are always out working all day. Romauld also works a lot but he also knows how to balance his time at work and time with his family.
