My New Guitar Day Goes Wrong.... Eastman QC Dropping?

So folks, sit back and enjoy the video, bit of a long one today! But it was quite a week let me say! Huge thanks to my misses for this surprise, She's heard me banging on about these guitars since i had to sell my T486 and tried to get me this for my birthday but none was available, so late birthday early xmas present and i'm very grateful!

I'd love to know what you guys would have done here, would you have returned it, stuck with it? I'm glad I stuck with it, it was a small issue on a great guitar well worth sticking it out. Does it show Eastmans QC has slipped? Maybe. Peach guitars were apologetic and happy to share the cost of the fix, They made a small mistake which is forgivable, handled it well enough.

What a gorgeous guitar! Congratulations man, you’ll have everyone drooling over that for years. I could feel your pain when telling us about the nut. I’ve met Andy before (he sold me my 335), and yes he’s a fine chap. Delighted he’s done a good job. 👍

Gotta say mate, great video. I've just got my Eastman SB59 V/GB 2 weeks ago. I felt your pain. Fortunately mine was brilliant and I had played it in store but yes they are hard to come by st the mo. I got the last SB59 in Australia. Great gift from your wife. Stoked you got it fixed and not returned. Your Eastman videos were a great resource for me as I was contemplating buying my Eastman. Thanks for that. Great channel and I'll keep watching for the deep dive on your new Eastman. Cheers

Congrats on the 59V. They have the lollar pickups right? I am very very tempted to try and find some for mine haha. Theyll be a deepdive vid done soon, i dialled in the amp for it tonight and played for 2 hours loving it haha.

Hi Colin, Between us were getting a few of the UK Eastman stock down eh haha. Peach dealt with it well (assuming the keep their word lol) I really think thats exactly what happened though - I bet its really common goes against my grain but there we go. I love the guitar, Its spoilt me I want those pickups in my 59 now hahaha.

Apparently you haven't bought a recent gibson electric guitar. I bought an es335 traditional a few years back. I had to do a lot of work to get it set up right. They give you a nifty swiss army knife-type tool with the guitar, as if to say "here, you finish it". Great guitar in the end, but I think my experience is typical. The eastmans I have bought have been some of the best setup guitars I've ever had. Their build quality reminds me of the pre norlan-era gibsons of the 40's, 50's and 60's

I've had the pleasure of playing a few Eastman guitars...and some violins. Great workmanship and tone. Its hand made so it's possible they miss it for QC.

I play with more distortion and gain, so the standard version suits me. Great video ! Eastman are great.

Yeh these pups definitely can only take a certain amount before they just get abit out of control. Id say the foo fighters bit at the end of the demo vid i did after is about the line. Cheers dude

Great information video. I have a T486 and a T59v, but the neck profile on my T59 is slightly thinner than my T486. I attribute that to the Handcrafted aspect of the build process. Both necks feel great, but it is a slight noticeable difference in profiles.

Wow no way thats interesting. Ive only played around half a dozen or so t486 and t59vs but the necks have been marginally chunkier on the 59v thats what made me want one haha. Like you say though handmade nature of them for sure. Thanks for watching 😁

I just bought one of the new SB59v's today (slightly different finish to the older guitars). I played it instore for an hour and checked it over top to bottom and couldn't fault it. Hopefully this is indicative of the quality of the latest guitars. I'll get a full setup done in a year or so just to get it perfect, but already lovely to play. Thanks for all the great content.

@@Paul-D Very nice. Gold top Les Paul with the P90's should be a great combination. I was just playing my T64V with the Lollar P90's. I lose track of time playing that guitar. Looking forward to your review of the SB56n!

Very nice guitar, this and the sb59 is a killer pair. You and Colin are buying up all the Eastman stock in England :). I think You made a good decision not returning it. It was a fun video to watch, and looking forward to the continuation with a full review, maybe a comparison to the sb59. The varnish finish will age so well, I saw an Eastman artist with this guitar and his guitar is completle worn off under the strings. It would be nice to get a little case candy, maybe a strap or something would be nice?!

You get the certificate and a nicely made truss rod key thats all the candy, well impressed with the case itself though, nicer than the one my normal SB59 came with. Thanks for watching - ill be sure to compare it on the full vid :)

Recently my favourite guitar that I have been playing is my epiphone classic in honey burst I think it sounds great, replaced tuners with gotoh vintage style

I have the exact same guitar in red bought from Peach coming through my door in about 90 mins (according to DPD tracking). Can't wait and fingers crossed I don't have the same problem😂

Ooh would love a noodle on that sometime. Infuriating about the nut, it’s such a vital thing that needs to be right, not everyone would have spotted that.

They were willing to sort it atleast. But like any big online retailer the chances of them being ontop of QC is next to zero. Just the way it is mostly. Guitar village has been my best buying experience to date.

@@Paul-D If they’ve just shipped out a guitar that’s been returned as faulty hoping the new buyer won’t want the hassle of complaining or returning it, that’s abysmal. They should’ve covered everything, not just shared the cost.

@@Paul-D More than 99%. A damaged guitar that had been sold then “reappears” on the website? I was going to buy a Les Paul from them as I like how you can see the precise instrument you’re getting. No chance now, I’m not risking three grand.

I guess its because im not local and couldnt get them to repair it in person. So a part cover of the cost was agreed. Not the best, not the worst 🤷‍♂️ ** the bigger suprise to me was that it slipped the QC. Came with a card saying had all points inspected but mustve been a friday afternoon job lol.

@@Paul-D Not cool though, they are making you waste time getting it fixed by not making sure it was setup properly - isn't that why we buy from retailers with a luthier on staff? I wouldn't be inclined to buy a instrument from Peach after learning they didn't cover the complete cost of the repair, maybe even discount it $100 for wasting your time? That was a careless mistake, maybe they just assumed it would be perfect since it's a Eastman, but they should check EVERY guitar they sell, and do a proper setup before sending it off, otherwise get out of the business!!

I’ve had a similar experience with Peach guitars. I questioned the integrity of the guitar. Didn’t quite get what should be expected. Off to a luthier it goes.

It will be interesting to see how Eastman control QC moving forwards given their growth. I own the same guitar that you've reviewed here but bought used, and it's superior in every respect to a vintage 64 ES345 that I sold a few years back. I also own an Eastman SB55DCv that I purchased six months ago as a replacement for a vintage 59 LPJ, and which is far superior to the old Gibson. My guess is that as volumes increase, personal pride in build-quality will decrease, automation will set in and Eastman could become a commodity like Gibson/Fender (below Custom-Shop level). I hope that doesn't happen, but in the meantime I'd be inclined to snap up used Eastmans because they're bargains when it comes to quality vs price.

Hopefully that doesn't happen for sure, Even if they have loads more dealers doesn't mean they all have to be full of stock at the cost of QC they've become admired for. I suppose the reality is, Has there ever been a company avoid QC problems as they grow? Thanks for watching, and keep enjoying your lovely Eastmans! :D

It was less then ideal. But they handled it well, they didnt doubt my findings and agreed with the solution i proposed. So thats good enough when a mistake is made 😁

strangley enuff i looked at a couple used ones after viewing your video and apparently they are all cut like that with the high e hanging on for dear life , beautiful guitar btw ....

Hmm weird cuz all the ones ive filmed before have never had any nut issue. Maybe its something on the new ones theyve overlooked? Im so happy its sorted now though and dont need to have it on my mind haha

@@Paul-D i wouldn't dwell on it , easy fix and you got a good luthier giving it a good once over [ not a bad thing ] , i own a eastman violin and am very happy with it , the pickups are not wax potted on that guitar if i'm not mistaken , any trouble with feedback ?

I see the nut problem often, always check the strings spacing at the nut, also make sure it aligns with string trees and tuning keys properly. Nuts can cost $100 to get a good guitar tech to cut a new nut, but if you can't do it yourself it's SO important - pay for it to be done. Another problem is having to raise the bridge too high off the guitar face to play properly, you want the bridge as low as possible to the body, unfortunately it isn't a problem that can be fixed without resetting the neck. I bought my T59 from a retailer who claims it has a pro setup, they are a repair shop too, so if it isn't setup perfectly back it will go. I expect it will be perfect, the reason I decided to buy it from this particular retailer, plus their T59 had the prettiest flame, and aren't we all a sucker for a pretty girl?

Alot of the Epiphones have crooked tuners too. With kidneybean keys it's not that apparent, but keystones need to be inline or they look shoddy imho.

Noticed the tuners are mounted in a radias around the headstock shape? That would drive me nuts.

Yeh it does look a little bit odd from the front. On the back though you can see the geometry is right and none look out of curve to the next so its something you soon forget about :)

Great demo beautiful guitar. I have actually acquired one very similar to it and several other Eastmans I have to tell you I’m really shocked by the quality and I do hope that it sustains because if it does, I think we’re looking at a company that could eventually put Gibson out of business Purists will still buy Gibson, but in my opinion, these are better guitars, and for the price I would much rather travel transit Lally with these guitars and take a risk on a $1500 guitar or a $2500 guitar then a seven or $8000 guitar I got to tell you I am unloading my Gibson guitars like crazy right now even my collector choice models I had 13 of them and I’m now down to seven. I’m going to get rid of all of them because they are more of a liability, truthfully, than they are enjoyment. The Eastmans have just replaced my acoustics and my electrics and every way their version of the Martin D 18 it may not be a Martin but it’s a damn fine guitar and I have been gigging with these guitars now for about a year truly Eastman rocks and you have one fun example enjoy and I hope you have enjoyed it obviously since you made this video, keep up the great demos peace and you have a great wife by the way, you should really be thinking her like double time Later 9:40

Wow fair play, it is indeed still very much being enjoyed. Of my 3 Eastmans, its my number 1. i really hope its sustained too, the hand varnished and aged finish coming to end now isnt great in my view coming from the older ones and already having tried the newer ones, but they were still very good.

What neck relief would you go for on that style guitar?

On a guitar with this scale length and 12 inch radius i would normally have very very little relief. I always sort relief by feel over standardised measurements but, very very little lol.

Was looking at their acoustics, but I can't find anywhere local to try them out. Bought a Gibson from Peach guitars, had lacquer cracks on the face of the headstock, even buffing compound round the pickup surrounds - This was a guitar that was meant to go through their set-up process - I would never buy a guitar from them again.

I reckon once a store is passed a certain size the store QC means nothing. There big enough to take returns and replace no sweat if needed. When i had my store if i sold more then 2 guitars in a 24 hour period it was hard to get them both absolutely right and shipped within 24 hours.

There's no question most of the guitars in high demand have been difficult to get, and you definitely have to be careful buying the leftovers. I don't care where you shop, imagine how many returned guitars Sweetwater has stacking up! They're STILL trying to sell those abominations they're calling exclusive colors in the Epi "59 LP line. I know for a fact those gross peach looking ones are all returns, that's why they're marked down to $849 from $899. Which is still $50 more than the $799 they sold for when released!

It's something you have to learn to bear in mind thats for sure, When shopping at a big well known place it's forgivable to think everything will be spot on. It's very naughty when guitars are resold after being returned without being totally clear and transparent about it. Simply a reduction on RRP isn't enough.

@@Paul-D I've went through 5-6 different sales associates at Sweetwater, because they all tried play'n me with returned guitars. I'm a very blunt and to the point guy, and when I'm being outright lied to or deliberately mislead, I'm done with that person, period. It's a shame, but these days you really have to know your shit, or people will walk all over you. If I mess up, I admit it. But they're training these people to call you and say they got the guitar you've been waiting months for, early somehow? Even going as far as shipping it before even contacting you. Then they'll make every effort to pin that reject guitar on you by trying to charge return shipping and/or restocking fees. I put my foot down right out the gate. Now my sales guy there is very good to me. It shouldn't take 6 different SA's to get it sorted.

Wow that is quite something, Being a Brit ive never dealt with Sweetwater - or in that matter there isn't any stores over here that go things like SW. But the general point of what the staff are doing is a problem for sure. In my personal experience walking into big stores here, my number 1 issue is always whoever is working there always assumes they know what I want more than I do. It's happened almost every single time ive been to a guitar guitar or PMT. Very annoying.
